“With Reason in a blink the future is mine”
Ever caught up with “Something doesn’t feel right” or “Things doesn’t fit something is wrong” moment in your life? That often lead you to answer this doubtful insights or intuitions in to a decision that some sort haste and fast that often give like a BLINK in an eye type of decision.
According to Malcolm Gladwell, BLINK is about human rapid cognition, a thinking that is a lot faster than we can realize it, and a thinking that operates quite mysteriously in comparison to our commonly used careful, planned, and thoughtful decision making.
Moreover, he continues to provide innumerable such examples of thin-slicing in contexts such as speed dating, tennis, gambling, military war games, malpractice suits, popular music, etc.
The argument is how the unconscious thought over powers a logically- thought decision and proves beneficial.
The author explains that when we are thin-slicing or making our snap judgment, our unconscious that makes those decisions for us, even before our conscious starts working on that information. Hence, the title “the power of thinking without thinking.” Our unconscious attitudes and prejudices play a deep role in our judgments and snap decisions. Gladwell (2005) deeply elaborates why and where can our mind reading abilities fail. He then spins your attention to the ability of problem solving—which involves a great deal of decision making. Some problem solving requires a flash of insight while some logic based-ones require explanations and thorough explanations. And this comes the Rational Decision Making.
Rational decision making is a multi-step process for making choices between alternatives. The process of rational decision making favors logic, objectivity, and analysis over subjectivity and insight. The word "rational" in this context does not mean sane or clear-headed as it does in the colloquial sense.
Both type of decision making is beneficial prior to the situations a manager involves in. It can be used both if necessary.
Poetry 101: Crossroads
Crossroads
Life is full of crossroads;
Either roads where there's toads;
Or roads with pseudo-nodes;
Still it's part of your crossroads
Crossroads are often confusing;
And in a sense of luck, it's often directing;
Some are mystifying,
But it will lead you where you were going.
It's not how fast or slow you are on journey
But on how you took it blimey;
High or low, good or bad;
Still crossroads will define you my lad
It never be right or wrong;
Deciding on your life;
Cause it will only have consequences in strife
On the crossroads that you have been chosen all along.
Just be brave, be wise in choosing a worthwhile;
For crossroads will never again pass by.

"Is the change we see, is the change we want or the change we need?"
“Real change that is the direction of our way of governance. Far from being mere slogans, these were battle cries articulated by me in behalf of people hungry for genuine and meaningful change. But change, if it is to be permanent and significant, must start with us and in us. To borrow the language of F. Sionil Jose, we have become our own worst enemies. And we must have the courage and the will to change ourselves.”
- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (Speech during his Inauguration)
As quoted above on the speech of President Duterte in relation to the word “Change”. Change is something is often misquoted but as of the emerging of our new administration where it deflects some norms of our society. Norms where define by people who mostly in the “alta sosyodad” leaving the real meaning of humility.
Thus for me, the change we see now is the change we need because with my own perception and as what I observed, Filipinos must re-learn and re-visit the true meaning of “Nationalism” and “Self-Discipline”, especially now that the mentality of each Filipinos are easily be swayed by any cultures – western.
Just like in our home, a father must be strict in implementing rules and regulations inside the house so that his children must establish a certain consequences if they deviate his rules and regulations. Children value something and retain some lessons in their life especially if something drastic happened to them. It will forever itch on their memories the true value of discipline and nationalisms.
This is what I see on how President Duterte establish the word ‘change”. Drastic but it gave our brain something to think off – either we are selfless or selfish towards the welfare of our country.
That’s what I see in him. That’s is why I bet on him. Though this is not the change I want but still it is the change that the country needs. It may not be generally benefited by this generation but it will be in the next future generation – and that’s what sustainability is. And we never know, the change I want might be answered after he answer the needs.
REACTION PAPER: “WHERE IS OUR GROWTH COMING FROM?”
One of the reason according the writer why our economy grow for the past months was due to the election. The economy always does better in election years. It is because there was an election-related spending by both candidates and the government provides a sufficient boost to significantly explain the difference.
Another indication on our growth was the domestic economy. Domestic economy posted an annual growth rate of 6.9 percent in the first three months of the year, against only 5 percent in the same period last year. That GNP/GNI grew significantly faster than GDP implies that incomes that Filipinos earned overseas grew even faster than what was earned here at home; indeed, the data say that such overseas income grew by 10.7 percent. I agree on this part as the writer stated, because technically every Filipino wants to work abroad since the income is high and that the revenue from our Overseas Filipino Workers to their family in the country increases. The higher the number of the Filipino working abroad the higher the revenue the higher the GNP – and this was proven on the previous reported GNP.
So, where did the boost in the domestic economy come from? This can be answered through the numbers of spending (demand) side and the production (supply) side.
With the advent of our present administration, government spending for both consumption and infrastructure. Which is yes it was pre-started during the previous administration but still the support and the stand of present of administration regarding infrastructure is tantamount and clear. Apart from this, the other sources of demand for the goods and services the economy produces are private consumers, firms spending on investments, and foreigners buying our exports of goods and services, including visiting tourists. Looking at growth from the production side of the economy gives us a clearer picture of who are benefiting from the growing economy which was stated respectively.
But sadly the big downer was agriculture, which shrank by 4.4 percent, the largest dip the sector has seen in the past two decades. This only showed that the previous administrations didn’t make this a priority. Or they had an effort but not enough. That is why in the recent years the growth of the economy didn’t feel to some ordinary citizens like farmers – farmers that exhibit in the poverty line. That is why there is a need on rebalancing of our economy’s growth to get more Filipinos to benefit from it.
HOT MESS CONSPIRACY: ‘KILLING-ME-SOFTLY-SCHEME’
It all started when one of the biggest branch of a known biggest food and beverage started to shake up its standing prior to its Noodles Production. This company already proven its sophisticated and strict ordinance and accordance in quality assurance and control from raw material to its productions limits and standards – Nestle Company situated in India.
When Khajuria, a head of corporate affairs of Nestle – India received a call prior to their main product which is the “Maggie” – instant noodle cup. This noodles had been booming in the food industry for almost three (3) decades in India household where it can roughly had a revenue of about 1.6 Billion USD quarterly. Unfortunately this airing of “MAGGIE” in the food industry seized due to the “accidental” knowing of Lead (Pb) content exceed to its regulated and standard concentration that if not address the soonest possible will create a dilemma prior to health especially to the children. Though their some issue like the Monosodiumglutamate (MSG) but the issue circulated technically to this Killing-Me-Softly kind of contaminant – Lead.
This incident made a wake-up call to any regulators, consumers, spectator and the company itself on how they can handle this shaky event.
The Nestle – India address this by talking with the government entities especially concerning Food Safety commissioner and other regulatory entities. But on how they handle the issues it left in their hands as it was reported to any kind of media like the Hindi Language Newspaper. Lots of people especially the mother were enraged for the said news – Maggi health scare.
Nestlé organization prior to managers at all levels are more concerned with leading and inspiring people to add value to the Company and society rather than with exercising formal authority. In an increasingly dynamic world, leaders face significant challenges and opportunities. These stem from shifts to new social patterns and unprecedented worldwide competition. There organizations lead to win, manage for results, and grow talent and teams and compete and connect externally. They have a decentralized and aligned organization type of organization.
Nestlé pragmatically implements the following organizational principles: (1) Being as decentralized as possible to optimally respond to the needs of consumers, within the framework defined by our fundamental policies, strategic directions and operational efficiencies. (2) Ensuring collaboration of all Nestlé businesses and compliance with Nestlé principles, policies and standards (Nestlé in the Market approach). (3) Building and maintaining a structure which assures operational speed, with a strong focus on results and removing unnecessary obstacles. (4) Establishing flat and flexible organizations with minimal levels of management and broad spans of control, which also enable people development. (5) Setting a shared vision and common goals to leverage the strength of people and organizational alignment. (6) Defining clear levels of responsibility. Teamwork does not affect the manager’s duty towards his/her people and business results.
Prior to the killing-me-softly-scheme event of Nestle – India, they were confronted by a daunting, multi-front challenge and that faced a frightened public, a clamoring media, unyielding regulators, and the always challenging conditions of doing business. According to the author, the following where the mistakes of company: (1) it was blinded by pride where the executives where complacent to the sureness of their product and safety controls. This translated to a lack of empathy when addressing alarmed regulators and consumers. They stayed quiet and issued canned legalistic state. They seemed arrogance prior to their rightness; (2) It failed to think two steps head because it somewhat when the event occurred, the executives in India was overwhelmed and having a hard time comprehending the issues. And when they started to address everything was late already and every regulators and consumers were angry; (3) It overlooked context because they only think that the event was only fleeting and nothing so serious about it; and (4) It communicated but didn’t engaged. They were slow to communicate, and when it did it talked of consumers rather than to them until Bulcke’s – CEO of Nestle Central press conference was faceless.
In addressing this event as if all are conspiring against the company then it’s time to address the issue the soonest possible. The company should have “Short-range Plan” and they don’t only focused for the “Long-term Plan”.
The Short-Range Plan involved addressing the issues the soonest possible through communication to the consumers. According to some expert, for so ubiquitous a brand, the first thing they could've done is conversed with the consumer. Whether guilty or not, it didn't matter; communication was nonnegotiable. The more the delay, the more the suspicion. Moreover, whenever a controversy happens, consumers pause and wait for clarity. The brand needs to come out, engage and keep the dialogue going.
There have been enough meltdowns on social media for most brand experts to recommend a well-defined strategy — communicate openly, give the company a face, say sorry if necessary, find your loyalists, have an honest discussion of the issue with them, give them an insight into the brand's perspective and hope they become your first line of defense at a time when the brand's credibility is badly damaged.
Though Nestle ran a campaign around the theme 'Main Aur Meri Maggi' inviting consumers to share their stories: one assumes they still had a database of loyalists, some of whom may have enjoyed social clout. Or it could have tapped into the numerous bloggers and people who were speaking up for it, many of whom were waiting for an official explanation. Instead it opted to remain uncommunicative.
The control process could have been implemented to prevent this event were (1) concurrent controls where it monitor ongoing operations and activities to make sure that things are being done correctly and they allow corrective action to be taken while the work is being done; and (2) feedback controls where take place after an action or operation is completed and focus on end results.
I recommend that when this conspiracy affect your company it would be better to address and communicate directly to the area which will be affected most like consumers. Talk to them. Though don’t stop you Long Range Plan which is addressing the regulators and other legal basis, still talk to other areas which contribute to the efficacy of your products or service. Don’t give them silent treatment and let them speculate everything.
