"This is worse than the goat yoga bullshit that people seem to think is a good idea," she agreed with an annoyed grumble. That was a bad enough idea she felt, but this was a different level of ridiculous. People dressing up as stupid things was already quite low on Tyler's list of things in life, but putting it in a scenario like this had blown it into a different category of irritating. "I bet he thinks he's fucking funny too." Granted, half the class seemed to be fully on board and enjoying it, but Tyler was willing to assume that those people must also be the worst.
Her brows perked up at the mention of a potential dog, which had to be about the only thing that Tyler could imagine not being terrible about this. "I like dogs," she said simply as a disagreement, that being one hill she would die on. Even if everything else was dumb, at least a dog would be a small victory.
@malloryhuitson
Mallory wrinkled her nose at that revelation. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t goats usually smelly creatures? Why would you do yoga with them?” Perhaps she misunderstood the exercise after all, and throughout the centuries of its existence, had morphed into some sort of scam to empty people’s pockets. “If this is what passes as funny around here, I may have to call in someone to check the water supply for mind-decaying bacteria.”
She shrugged; animals never impressed her but she saw the benefits to some. “I worry its little heart will give out at the sheer image of that,” Mallory nodded her head toward the Grinch. “At least it’ll be over soon.”
@tysingh
A grin spread across Lorelai's face at Mallory's answer and gave a nod of approval. "Why I am very enjoyable indeed, you're not wrong there." She had no qualms about agreeing with that. She smiled even more at the compliment and gave a thank you. "I figured it had a particular ice queen look to it. And some do compare my soul to a block of ice so thought I'd confirm it for them." Lorelai nodded, thinking about whether or not she'd remembered any plans in between now and the end of the year. "I think you might be right, such a shame. What is better than gloating about how much you spent towards a cause that somehow amends for all the horribleness you've committed. 'Tis the season."
@malloryhuitson
“I see.” Mallory wasn’t entirely sure if Lorelai was angling for the businesswoman to agree with the ice queen comment, or to argue against it, so she merely just took another sip of her champagne. “If I applied that logic, does that create the implication I’m wearing black because instead of a soul it’s merely a void of nothingness?” Not that she’d be offended if Lorelai agreed, she had heard worse over the years. “Color me curious, but what atrocities have you committed that can be made up through spending this much money? Maybe you’re more dangerous than I pegged you for, Lorelai Tseng...”
@lorelai-tseng
If only Dax had taught her more, but Dale had taken it upon himself to guide her in the times she'd stopped by for a fresh bouquet of gorgeous flowers. "He's a nice guy when you get to know him. A little intimidating, but he knows flowers." It seemed silly to say, considering he was a florist and it was entirely his job to do so. It had only taken her by surprise when a man well over six feet had offered to help her pick out an assortment far more beautiful than she could have ever pieced together on her own. "I think so, yeah. It's not too much, but it's not underplayed either. It can sit in a room without being the only thing someone focuses on, but it can also be appreciated for it's beauty too." What was she even saying? She never decorated for Christmas (on her own, at least), but it sounded as if she'd taken a crash course on holiday decor.
@malloryhuitson
Mallory smirked, despite herself. “I think that’s the first time I ever heard someone's passion and career based around flowers being considered ‘intimidating’,” She explained after a moment. “I get that, though. The most peculiar things bring out the fire, sometimes.” Mallory nodded in appreciation of the woman’s words, because that was exactly what she needed to hear about this particular piece of decor. “Are you sure you don’t work here yourself? Or are you secretly some sort of Christmas expert?”
@verdadurmaz
"Makes it look enticing, like something effortlessly chic. And trust me, sometimes after a day dealing with work and my daughter I feel like something strong. But yeah, wine is where I pause." At the question Alicia could not help the eager nod of her head. "The thing I miss the most after my family. Sunshine and beaches." It always gave her something to look forward to when planning to go visit family though. A change of scenery, a change of weather - it added excitement to the trips back home. "Of course. Well, I know that we just met but if you ever need to vent or have some wine with someone, I'm in the neighborhood."
“It takes a lot of effort, surprisingly, to be able to drink it without coughing it back up from its strength.” Mallory admitted. Whilst her family got her on last nerve more often than not, she also understood what it was like to miss those further away. “At least visiting usually means the weather is more decent.” She pointed out with a grin. “Thank you, Alicia. That is a kind offer. I hope to see you around sometime?”
@aliciamillergarcia
For some reason unbeknownst to her, Joselia wanted Mallory to approve of her. She got this craving every once and a while, something a therapist could tell her was the still-mangled tendrils of family wounds flaring up. But, those things weren't worth musing over over weak coffee. "I-- yeah, I can definitely get you that," Jo stammered, taking a final sip from her mug and fighting back a wince.
"Yes, definitely, I'm staying with a friend," she assured the woman with a breathy laugh. "Oh, and he and I have talked about just getting a two-bedroom, if that helps?" Joselia paused and lifted an eyebrow, "Uh.. what, exactly, are you going to do? Honestly, I have no idea what property development means."
Mallory noticed the wince, quickly checking her phone, doing the mental calculations in her head. There was another place not far from here, a chain rather than local, which she normally didn’t approve of in picturesque towns like this but, alas, needs must. “Come with me. I think we both deserve better than…” And she gestured to the coffee cups, gracefully standing from the barstools.
“Well, that’s good to hear. And that only matters to me if it matters to you -- do you want to live with this friend?” She wouldn’t let this girl, this Joselia, be strong-armed into agreeing to something she wasn’t one hundred percent certain on. At the question, she arched an eyebrow. “Kill your landlord.” She deadpanned, and without even brushing it off as a joke, responded to the younger woman’s comment. “Well, it’s a good thing I’m not interviewing you for a position in my company then. Life is too short too worry about things you don’t understand.”
@joselialopes
The carry on option was smart and likely something worth considering even if it meant that she'd have to forego some snacks and some of the trash magazines that she liked to read. "You must be a professional traveller because I've mentioned this to a bunch of people and no one even considered bringing it on as a carry-on item." Amara would consider it should she choose to keep the dress and not return it. "That sounds like a cool grandmother." Though she felt that everyone should watch it, she knew that some older generations were not up to date with the type of tv shows that were popular with children or young adult these days. "I can't imagine. I wanted kids but now it's seeming like something that'll never happen given how quick time flies by. Is she your only child?"
@malloryhuitson
“I travel for business a lot.” Mallory admitted, “There was possibly a year or two I was all but living at airports and in hotel rooms, you do end up picking up a few tricks.” Those weren;t her best years, not any she looked up fondly, but like everything else in life, it taught her a few lessons. The corners of her mouth twitched at the idea of Bridget Huitson being defined as something like ‘cool’. “I guess. It’s perhaps the only thing progressive about her.” But Mallory knew she did it for Aspen, and that’s all that mattered to her. “It’s never too late for children. You seem young, I’m sure they’re in the cards for you no matter how they get to you. Yes. Truthfully I’m glad to have only had one. If there were two of them, I would have ripped my hair out long ago.”
@amaraobi
Thea let out a laugh at the question, knowing that Mallory had not meant to be funny with it, but the thought of her and Elliot being anything close to childhood sweethearts was comical. "Sorry, to answer your question, no we were not. He was not my cup of tea growing up, I actually thought he was the most annoying, brattiest, spoiled boy to ever exist when we were younger." In fact it had only been really almost two years ago now that she'd thought anything different of him. "It only turned into something else last year." She shared, remembering the initial denial that she'd gone through before things became inevitable and now here they were. "Oh yikes, well I'm sorry that this year wasn't one for the books, but I hope that it's a relaxing Christmas for you then." Thea smiled at the maybe, knowing that Mallory would make the effort to at least try to come and she appreciated that. "Yeah! Well it's going to be a decades theme too so it'll for sure be a good time!"
@malloryhuitson
She merely raised an eyebrow at the laughter, nodding slowly at Thea’s explanation. “I see. Well, it seems like you’re living in one of those romantic comedies Aspen seems obsessed with.” Mallory stated, thinking of her daughter’s Kindle storage and Netflix viewing history. “Well, each of us will unfortunately experience an annus horribilis. But next year will be an improvement, I’m sure. Decades themed seems fun, if I’m in town, I’ll try to stop by.” It wasn’t a promise by any means, but she respected the younger business woman, and liked to show support when she could.
@theaxharris
His father would have argued the exact opposite. Byung Ho had always maintained that existing relationships were more likely to bear fruit than new ones. After all, he viewed people as investments and the more he invested, the greater the return. His brother was similar to Mallory in that he too believed in pursuing new business. Hyun Woo had been agnostic to such matters. He tried not to view people as investments. “Ouch, guess the days of wining and dining are behind me. Maybe I should start feeling taken for granted.” He always had a way to using humor to deflect from serious topics from a young age. Maybe it came with being the youngest, maybe it was a defense mechanism that kept him sane in a household that was akin to a pressure cooker. Either way, it was obvious he didn’t mind that she brought him to this home to grill him rather than show him around. He was nonconfrontational, but hardly private about his troubles. Especially considering that Mallory was an old friend in comparison to all the new faces he was surrounded by in Providence Peak.
It was ironic because even in her attempt to comfort him, Mallory couldn’t say that he was a good father or a perfectly palatable guy. How could she? They didn’t know each other well so it would be obvious they were empty words if she tried. In a way, Hyun Woo appreciated her honest appraisal of what she knew, so he accepted the praise with a chuckle. “Thank you. Coming from you, that’s high praise.” As she recounted her own troubled marital history, Hyun Woo was reminded of the few months leading up to his own divorce when he had purposefully distanced himself from his ex. Ignoring her had been worse than fighting because he was intentionally strangling the life out of their relationship. “Even if it was a long time coming, it’s still the end of a chapter. It’s emotionally and mentally taxing. Are you close to signing or are your lawyers still fighting it out?” He thought about her question for a second, recalling the few times that he’d spoken with Sarang since returning. “As well as she could with me showing up unannounced. But she's never been spiteful." Which she would have had all the reason to be, should she have wanted. Hyun Woo's gaze followed Mallory's out the window to take in the scenery once more. "So despite our differences, she isn’t stopping me from meeting our son.” @malloryhuitson
Glad the teasing didn’t offend him, Mallory merely smirked at his answer. “Perhaps I should be the one wined and dined for a change?” She suggested. The businesswoman had no qualms in her opinion being heard. Even if her need to be heard often resulted in her being labeled in a more negative light. But, words only hurt you if you let them, as her grandfather often reminded her. That said, she tolerated Hyun Woo more than others in this damn town, and would never mean to purposefully upset him, glad he took this ambush in stride.
“It is,” She agreed, simply. “I can be soft when need be.” Of course, there was only ever a small handful of those in her life who saw the true softness, but this was as emotionally available as she could muster being with the others, who were held at arm’s length for good reason. His other words hit a nerve, not necessarily in a bad way, but since the separation had been set in motion, Mallory realized she actually hadn’t spoken to anyone else who lived through divorce. It had been taxing, not just for her but for her daughter, even if the dynamic wouldn’t shift all that much. But she merely swallowed up those feelings; the exhaustion from the proceedings, the relief of being understood, with a tight smile. “Fighting, unfortunately. He’s hoping that if he drags it out long enough I’ll just give in and go back to him. As if he’s forgotten how stubborn I can be.” Even though what she was doing was not an act of spite, but something she needed to be happy. “I’m glad to hear that she’s letting you form a relationship with him. Can’t say I’d do the same if I were in her position, but then again, I can be spiteful.”
@seongxhyunwoo
"That seems to be the thing people do in movies. I don't know, usually a glass of red wine does the trick for me." She definitely could relate with the feeling of needing a drink after a particularly hard day. "I know. We were very lucky. Oh no, I'm from California originally," Alicia explained. Although after all these years here, Providence Peak was her home. "I'm sorry to hear that."
“Truth in television and all,” Mallory responded. “I bet you miss the year-round sunshine, sometimes?” She questioned, never really being a fan of the states that didn’t have noticeable seasons, glad that Colorado had at least that. At her apology, she simply waved her hand. “It’s fine. These things happen, and it’ll all be for the best.”

Lorelai had already sent a donation to the hospital before the event, but she felt like there was always something that could happen. Plus it wasn't like she had much better to do other than be at her restaurant and she was planning on being there all through the next few days so she figured a night out where she got to dress up couldn't hurt. Strolling around the event to look for a familiar face ignoring the stares her way, she was happy to see Mallory who'd she remembered telling her she'd be at some events through the season.
She of course looked stunning as well and she gave the woman a genuine smile as she approached her. "You look lovely, have you found anything or anyone enjoyable thus far?" Lorelai asked with interest as she looked around the room now that she was next to the other woman.
Being brought up in an environment where attending these events were common, Mallory had found them boring by the time she was in high school. Of course, she could see why other people enjoyed them; the decor, the feasts with all the trimmings, especially those who could cope with small-talk, but she never could. When she was old enough to be taken more seriously, she usually tried to talk business, and, when that failed, usually had to babysit Marshall who managed to convince the waiters that of course he was twenty-one and who was going to notice one missing bottle of champagne?
And, as she grew older, she tried to avoid them. And then, after meeting Robert, allowed herself to be paraded around like a show-pony on the offchance of making important business decisions. Then they drifted apart, both emotionally and physically, and thought she'd be done with it all. Yet here she was, standing in the Peak Seasons ballroom counting down the hours until she could leave. "I think my someone enjoyable has just came over to me. Thank you, you look stunning yourself. The blue suits you." She said, straightening up as Lorelai approached her. "I believe this may be the last one of the season, thank God."
@lorelai-tseng
"They're dogs even with the wedding band, you just didn't hear it before," Nathan snorted. It was a relief to see her. While he was enjoying himself far more than he usually did at formal events, he'd just managed to peel himself away from one of the gentlemen from his HOA on a rant about lawn height of all things and he wasn't eager to get caught by another.
His brow crept up in amusement as he watched her and took a careful sip of his own drink, as though to make a point. "Oh what torture. It could be worse, your mother could be here. I'd say give it another thirty minutes you could slip out without anybody noticing, people are already halfway to drunk as it is. There's enough champagne here to fill the lake. Though, you know, you could try having a good time."
@malloryhuitson
"Oh, trust me, I've heard plenty about other women at these events before, but I do think they've learnt their lesson by some of the comments they've made toward me." Whilst she cared immensley about how she presented herself at affairs like this, she also had no fingers in the metaphorical pie regarding the hospital. If the board members of her company had learned basic respect and decency, she was sure the old crows running the hospital could deftly do the same.
Mallory merely blinked at Nate in bemusement. "I was having a perfectly pleasant time until you mentioned my mother, Crane. Thanks for that." She drawled, "Since when are you the embodiment of fun and festive cheer anyway?"

Yoga was already something Tyler considered a waste of her time and a thoroughly irritating experience, but out of sheer loyalty to Hana as one of her few friends, she showed up. The annoyed expression she wore through each session never faded, but she was at least able to make it through most sessions without being a complete drain on the energy of the class. And then someone dressed as the Grinch walked into the session and the immediate look of absolute outrage was now pouring bad energy into everything around her.
There was a certain level of irony that the real Grinches were probably Tyler and Mallory in this situation, a fact that was completely missed by Ty herself. "This is bullshit. No one said the fucking class was being taught by a dickhead in a dumbass costume," she seethed, body shifting back into the next pose, every muscle fiber filled with a tension that shouldn't have been present. "He's not even funny."
@malloryhuitson
She knew she should have just gotten up and left when she had the choice, but Mallory was a stubborn woman, and god damn it, she was going to let this creature teach her yoga. Even if his theatrics could use a bit more coaching.
"I just don't understand why this would be signed off by anyone. I thought by its benefits, yoga was supposed to be relaxing, not some sick form of torture." It was beneficial, to find someone in this small room who wasn't tickled by the antics of the Grinch, whose real identity Mallory was already plotting to seek out to know who to avoid in this town. collapsing onto the mat as soon as a break was called, she turned to say Ty. "I overheard some talk about a dog joining in. Surely a health and safety violation?"

"Who knew men were absolute dogs once you no longer had the safety of a wedding band on your finger?" Mallory asked in greeting to Nathan as she managed to sought him out in the crowd. She had only been here for at least an hour, and immediately had numerous members of the hospital board make lewd comments towards her, some not even having the tact of waiting until their unlucky wives were out of earshot.
A waiter with a tray of champagne walked by, and she nabbed it, downing the contents of the flute in one swig. It wasn't what she needed, craving something stronger, but it'd do for now. "How long until I can gracefully bow out? It's like Westport except fifty times more horrendous."

It wasn't often that Mallory made a mistake. In fact, even this situation wasn't her fault; and when this damned incompetent assistant was no longer in charge of Mallory's calendar come the new year, she'd probably throw a party. But wishing for the stupid secretary to be out of her life wasn't going to solve the pressing matter, arms crossed in fury as she was expected to take some oaf donned in green fur.
"Who do I speak with to get some sort of compensation for this? I do not feel comfortable with the Grinch of all things telling me to get into Downward Dog position." She sniped to the woman next to her in the back, looking even more infuriated than the CEO did, if that was even possible.
