When working on this graphic novel I’d often ask people if they (1) pretended not to like anime in high school or (2) weren’t shy about openly liking anime. I went to high school at the time you typically hid that interest like the plaque. (the 2010s was different lol) But joining my high school anime club was life changing to me. I gained more confidence in myself and met some of my best friends of my life there. Once I become president as a senior, it even allowed me to deepen friendships with people and it’s part of why I became so close to my husband Daigo ! (First club meet I invited him too I showed a few episodes of Gintama)

This story is not a memoir but its inspired by not just my experience of running an anime club, but also commuting to high school via the NYC subway, and navigating friendships while crushing on both guys and girls.
