Could and Would- Nate Maloley Imagine
You moved to California almost a year ago simply because you just needed to get away. Omaha was getting too small and everyone needed to be in your business. They always wanted to know what you were doing, who you were doing it with and when you’d do it again. You thought it would be best to just get away and LA seemed like the place to do it.
“Mel?” You called as you entered your new home. Your best friend Melissa had been living in LA ever since graduation and since she was looking for a roommate, you knew it was fate.
You two decided to make a huge celebratory dinner and catch up. Within the first day, you were much happier than you were in Omaha.
“Have you spoken to Nate at all?” Mel asked and that’s when you got nervous.
You and Nate were best friends in high school. Everything you did, you did together but then he left Omaha after graduating and you never heard from him again.
“No but seriously, what are the chances I’ll bump into him in one of the biggest cities in the country?” You questioned.
Later that night, since you were too tired from moving all your stuff in, you two decided a movie night would be perfect. And just as you sat down, your phone went off with the name “Nate” popping up. You looked at Mel and questioned whether or not you should pick up but it was as if your hand wasn’t your own because it answered your question for you.
“Hello?” You said, into the phone.
“I could have fallen in love.” He whispered.
“Excuse me?”
“I would have fallen in love. The minute you leave high school, things start getting real, you know? What you’re going to do with your life, where you’re going to do it and who you’re going to do it with and anytime I thought about that…I realized I was thinking about you. I didn’t think I would ever have to tell you any of this but you’re here…so why not?
“Everyday, I’d wake up and realize that I’ve wasted half of my life wondering what would have happened to us if I had just told you. And ever since I got to LA, I’ve been wanting to share the view…with you. Can you come by? I’d really like to see you.”
You hesitated to answer but everything in you was screaming “Yes!” so he texted you his address and you looked over at Mel.
“You gave him my number.” You said, knowing exactly what she did. You had changed your number since high school and you knew for a fact you had never given it to Nate.
“Of course I did! You don’t think I see the way your eyes light up when you talk about him? Now, go.” Mel said, practically pushing you out the door.
As you stood outside Nate’s house, the nerves kicked in. Are you doing the right thing? Should you leave the past in the past? But once again, it was as if your hand wasn’t your own because it knocked on the door.
Nate opened the door and before he could say anything, you decided you needed to speak.
“I could’ve and would’ve fallen in love too.” You said and admitting your feelings never felt so right.
