I don’t think I have a “favorite” fanfic I read when I was growing up bc I guess it’s so specific to certain interest eras I had which I don’t tend to rank in any way and I didn’t often really reread things tbh. But there’s one I think about that was so formative to me because it was when I was already getting into the groove of how I wanted my writing style to me and I had finished an author’s study in hs about Ray Bradbury and had finished Something Wicked and I looked it up for shits n gigs as teens do. but I can probably say this is the most impactful ff I ever read in my life to this day lol. And I don’t even read ff anymore

Literally of all things in the world… a ray Bradbury fic LOL. anyway I think I found myself so hooked on the framing and atmosphere and wording of this one that I took bits of it and ran for SUREEE growing up writing silly little ff. I didn’t read anything much else from this author and idk if they post anymore bc they seem to be a livejournal transplant from back then but I hope you are still writing, like really ….

Just remembered that everyone was mad at Jason for 1) being broken up with??? and 2) dying and deceiving Piper so he could sacrifice himself the way he did. Which means that when her and Leo get together the others REALLY aren't on board with it because Leo was the first person to do that to her in the first place. Poor girl can't catch a break for shit

I need to find the “piper wins the friends in the divorce” compilation I was making that one time I skimmed tbm but it truly is the funniest thing that Piper & Leo have the only big breakdowns on screen about him dying essentially for Piper’s sake which makes their anger for a hypothetical liper occasion just as justified imo

I don’t think I have too many precedents for what I’m about to say but the whole “gruff guy who finds a kid becomes a begrudging parent” always never worked w a woman bc she would never be depicted gruff enough and even if she did it’s weird to force motherhood on a woman who’s gender nonconforming and also it’s funnier doing that to a guy bc societal repercussions irl make that more appealing to the masses bc of gap moe (you know what I mean). It isn’t gap moe to fulfill gender roles I guess

That being said, I think there’s definitely a through line here where there’s a young woman (usually) thrust upon motherhood with something inhuman/beast like as well. This feels like it could date back historically even before all this hot buzzy media trope of “sexy masculine man as dad” was even a thing but yeah. Rosemary’s Baby is kind of huge with this tho you don’t get that relationship until the very end when she sees her baby. And I guess I’m thinking specifically of I Want to Hold Aono-Kun where *spoiler* that green baby thing shows up, metaphorically or not.

I think the main thing here is a juxtaposition of the Madonna and child here. Whereas both are young beautiful and “right” (politically, societally) if one was exchanged with something off [masculine non-traditional father is equivalent to the mother’s beastly child here lol] then we get that trope in the reversed gender.

Something awesome which we haven’t seen yet is what I mentioned above w the gruff woman having a child but again I would need that to be extremely layered to work without being super misogynistic

saw a post on bluesky about reimagining The Iliad as a mecha war and that idea goes unbelievably hard. achilles in his legally distinct gundam cutting through dozens of enemy suits. aggamemnon in his gold-plated mech. paris using a long range sniper rifle to exploit a design flaw in achilles' armor. the gods are all various megacorps who have a stake in the war bc it'll impact their profits.

Also like everyday brings another White male character with 5 seconds of screentime and a paper thin personality that fandom latches onto because they're 'sooo relatable and interesting!' meanwhile a Black character can be the world's most complex nuanced person but they're just too new :( they don't have enough moments :(( something just doesn't click :((((
