The beauty of liper is that they both have to be horrifically lonely in order for the idea of them to work. Piper feels like she’s useless in comparison to the rest of the 7, Leo feels like he’s the 7th wheel. Post-TOA liper is even yummier because at that point it’s not hard to imagine that they’d both really, truly feel like they have no one left who gets them in all the world.

hi!! hope i'm not bothering you. you mentioned in a post about the "wilderness school theory", i have been in the fandom for years but i don't think i've heard of it before. could you please explain it or point me to someplace where i can read about it? thanks!!

Hi, it’s no bother at all! 😊 The “Wilderness School Theory” (or “Rooftop Theory”) is a longtime headcanon that Piper’s fake memories of Jason in TLH were actually real, but took place with Leo instead. The idea is that Leo and Piper were originally in a budding relationship before Hera interfered, wiping Leo’s memories and replacing him with Jason in Piper’s recollection of things.

The theory has been floating around since before I joined the fandom ~15 years ago, so it’s safe to say that it probably popped up shortly after TLH was released. I’m not sure where it originated, but @incorvos might have an idea. It’s not super popular or anything, but most og liper fans have adopted it as canon for years. It’s so widely accepted in our circles that even referring to it as a “headcanon” feels weird to me, it’s practically liper fandom 101 atp 😭 It’s broken containment a few times, but for the most part I fully believe that it’s mostly a liper/longtime jasipereo superfan thing.

In addition, there’s also a spin-off trope that involves Leo and Piper regaining their memories from Wilderness later on, i.e. during the events of HOO or post-canon. It’s a real favorite of mine to read & write about. Hope you enjoyed this small bit of pjo fandom history!!! 🤗

There' were other fics pre-MoA release that tackled the Wilderness School era (like The Art of Wasting Time), but I believe the ship gained a bit more attention after Mark of Athena (around 2012) because of a certain scene in the book, and some growing sentiments of how Jason and Piper's relationship was being handled at the time, and Liper really took off in the 2013-2014 era (close to the end of the HoO series).

Just remembered that everyone was mad at Jason for 1) being broken up with??? and 2) dying and deceiving Piper so he could sacrifice himself the way he did. Which means that when her and Leo get together the others REALLY aren't on board with it because Leo was the first person to do that to her in the first place. Poor girl can't catch a break for shit
