Kiyoko was formally a player on her middle school's female basketball team. her speed, stamina and jumping ability made her a key player and she had a knack for throwing three pointers ( as she lacked the power needed to land a swift slam dunk from close range ).
though due to her lesser skill in technique, during a match she attempted a three pointer from a difficult angle with two opposing players marking her-- thus leading her to overstep her jump and fall. the fall itself did no real harm aside from bruising and a twisted ankle, but the mental fracture was enough for her to resign from the team after being benched for the remaining matches of the season. reason being that her three pointers post the fall were all off target and any situation landing her with more than just the one mark had the ball being passed rather than shot for the net.
she denies having the yips and instead refers to what happened as a simple avoidance of a similar situation occurring that could result in further injury or humiliation.
as the manager of Karasuno's male volleyball team, she cares deeply for the players and sees them more as brotherly figures rather than simply classmates, friends or just positions on the court. she values their physical and mental health closely but quietly, ensuring that their training regime always has them in best form so that they aren't set up to make similar mistakes to the one she made in middle school.
