“No one has ever heard the first opening act’s stuff. That’s why everyone buys the booze and runs to the loo now,” Mandy shared her laugh, stopping her rhythmic movement to clap for a moment. “Exactly like that. Beautiful, Hannah. Truly beautiful.”

Anything to get you to stop moaning,” she teased, her doggy-earing (a terrible habit she couldn’t break) her page on Ulysses before snapping it shut and tucking it into her enchanted bag. “You genuinely wouldn’t like it, I promise. You must be sick of training at this stage, are you?”

Being abashed was never one of Adrian’s strong points. No point in being deceitful to Mandy before him as he hummed while prolonging his answer, but being blunt had no fun. “Hmm. So curious, Mandy. It’s not as if you would meet any of them. Nobody stays around long where I’m involved.” ( Or as friends would more so comment, the lack of his involvement in a relationship was what made everyone deter. )

“I don’t write.” Deadpanned, and utterly serious, the man couldn’t remember the last time he put anything down on paper, other than owls. “Which is a proper good thing that you do more than enough of writing and reading for the both of us. Cheers to that,” reaching forward to clinking their cups despite the fact that they weren’t on their first sips. “I am looking at you, Mandy. And I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t consider you worthy of their times and attentions, unless they’re a jealous old bat. Have you consider swiping up the next time that blasted thing matches you up? Or maybe the traditional route, meeting through friends…” Which made Adrian grimace as his mother adored to set him up with worse pairs than some of the matches the mirror provided. “On second thought, forget I said that. You’ll definitely meet the right one some time. Nobody ever said quantity bested quality, darling.”

“I’m just taking an interest in your life,” she shrugged one shoulder, still smiling, the tinge of mischief hidden in the corner of her lips. “I’ve managed to put up with you. Daphne’s still around somehow. Your mother hasn’t disowned you yet. We’ve stayed around long enough. Maybe you should just start putting yourself out in the playing field.” And she tried to picture Adrian in a relationship that lasted a month. Her thoughts flew back to his fleeting relationship with Daphne and how he’d been... exhausted. Even at the time she had felt bad that his ex-girlfriend hadn’t been getting near of attention ( even if him dating the brunette meant Mandy would have to study in the library alone ). She could never be like that. Non-committal. If Mandy did something, she was going to go the distance. She couldn’t not try. She didn’t understand Adrian’s lack of interest.

“Speaking of which, I’ve been reading more Plath’s poetry and oh my God, she’s amazing. Terribly sad but amazing—” and with that, Mandy clinked her cup against his, nodding at him before throwing back the remaining liquid, with a scrunch of her face at the strong taste. “Please sir, may I have some more?” she quoted, eyes widening like she was a child or a puppy and a hand holding out the cup. When he complimented her, saying that he was looking at her, Mandy felt a warmth crawl up her chest and neck. “You know, maybe I should. It’d be nice to meet someone. You seem determined to set me up. Have you found me my soulmate, Pucey?”

“Actually, Adrian. Have you heard that the Weird Sisters are coming to the PeeDee? Because we absolutely have to go.”

“I don’t need a maid. I’m rarely here as it is, in which the maid would be present here more than I would be,” Adrian drawled, the lack of any sheepishness as he stood to bring the bottles to the table in front of them, a hesitant glance to observe his belongings. “Besides, it’s not as if anyone else sees it other than a select few, you know. Mum, Daph, and lucky ol’ you. And no girlfriends, because I highly doubt they’d tolerate this mess too.” Laughing heartily, he made the effort to shuffle some books in a proper stack on the end of the table. It made no difference to him anyway.

“You needn’t experience to base a story off of. I’m sure it is the fictional readings that are the more enjoyable of the bunch.” Something about her tangent made him smile. It would surely occur in her lifetime that Mandy would be the heroine of someone’s world. Which was rather distracting when she began mentioning her lack of interest in romance. Her expectations are high which was old news to the former Slytherin. Not that I would know what her type is, judging by Goldstein back in the day, Adrian thought to himself as he threw back the whiskey. “Don’t put yourself down.” Hoping he had misread her tone as playful or sarcastic, the man could only wonder how often it was that truth was behind casual statements. He bore his eyes unto her blues, wanting very much so to ruffle her head of flaxen hair like he had in their school days, but Adrian refrained, his hand trained on the bottom of his glass.

“Maybe if you had a maid, you’d want to hang out here more often!” But then again, Mandy had always been the home bird type. As much as she loved spending time with her friends, she needed her days of rejuvenating at home. “No girlfriends? In this bachelor pad? What a shocker. Any...” she paused, a glimmer of mischief shining in her eyes. “boyfriends so?”

“Haven’t you ever heard write what you know, Adrian?” Not that she actually wanted a stalker though there was an element of mystery and intrigue to the idea. His firm reminder not to put herself down caught her off guard. A fleeting knot of her eyebrows fluttered across her face before it was gone. She held onto his gaze, even as she lifted up the cup to her lips to take another sip. “...Okay. You’re right. I shouldn’t.” But despite self-confidence warming her chest and filling her with pride so often, it got hard sometimes. One boyfriend out of twenty years of life and trying to be the best she could possibly be. It was her own fault for shutting guys down based on minuscule flaws but still. “Of course I’m dating material,” she teased, wanting to bring back the playful tone to the evening. “I mean, look at me.”

“You’ve got plenty of admirers out there, I’m sure of it. There’ll be a day where tons of letters come fleeting in from them in one instance and I am going to stop this sentence right now, because it is beginning to sound more about a stalker rather than admirers from afar.” He gathered two proper cups for the beverages, and shrugged casually. Everyone ( especially his mother ) had an issue regarding the downsides of his occupation, but he couldn’t be bothered. In fact, if there were no elements of detriment such as the danger, Adrian doubted he’d be nearly as interested in being a hit wizard. “You would be fine without me, Mandy. You’re intelligent. Resourceful. With a bit of bite, you know, just a tad.” The tone in his voice was an amused ring, as he brought a cup of the wine to the blonde as he sat beside her. “I highly doubt anyone from your life would define you as dependent.” And she would flourish, even now she does. Someone as radiant as the witch before him deserved to be showered with affections. “So tell me why someone like you is not currently the apple of some bloke’s eye? Tell me what I’ve missed since we’ve seen each other last. Awful matches, terrible dates…”

“I’m not sure about plenty. Maybe like, one or two at the most. Having a stalker sounds like something out of a novel. I’m not sure I could complain too much if I was the much loved heroine in a thriller,” Mandy mused. “But then you’d have to be in the story as the daring but stoic hit wizard that saves me. Except let’s be honest, I’d be the one doing the saving.” Not that she had done any saving when it actually mattered but it was a nice thought, to think that she had the strength to. She could never do what he did. Putting his life on the line, living on a permanent adrenaline high. It would make her too dizzy to think.

“You flatter me. I mean, I think you’re flattering me.” Mandy grinned up at him, reaching for the cup of wine and moving over, resting on the arm of the chair and giving him more room. She took a long sip, smacking her lips (‘ladies don’t smack their lips,’ she could hear her mother say with an amused quirk of her eyebrow) at the sharp taste. “I can take care of myself. You on the other hand,” she cast an eye around the sitting room, a teasing simple twisting up her lips. “Could use a maid. What would your poor mother think? Oh God, you’re just biased. I’m hardly dating material. Not many blokes could put up with me. You’ve missed nothing. I have had a few matches but none of them were my kind of man. Not quite... my type. Not that I’d mind a date or two but none of them have been quite good enough. What about you? Any new women in your life? It’s about time someone made an honest man out of you.”

Mandy’s constant need to be the best would put most people off but Mora was a true Ravenclaw and respected her friend’s ambition. It was also hard for her to see the faults in her friends. But for once in her life Mora wanted to compete. “I’ve always been obsessed with Greek mythology, any mythology really… Have you read the Mists of Avalon? Such a great take on Arthurian legend.”

“I read it a couple of years ago actually,” Mandy said, a tinge of pride in her voice, so slight it was nearly undetectable. “Actually, I know you’re a pureblood but they’re making a tv show — um, like a moving picture in the papers but in a box and it talks — based on the Mists of Avalon. I mean, it won’t be nearly as good as the book — no interpretation ever is — but I have high hopes.”
