“Thank Circe,” Padma said, though she peered at him uncertainly. “How’s old Slughorn? Hopefully still on his feet and teaching, yeah?”

“They’re addicted, Pads. They want what they want and they don’t care if I’m pleasant or not.” She paused for a second to think, “Besides, I’m not the only one selling. There are other locations.”

“That’s sad, though,” Padma said after a moment’s pause. “You’ve never felt, I don’t know, guilty? Not that it’s wholly your fault they decide to buy again and again.”

“How’s your back, Mandy? Might be a little painful from that posturing you’re doing.” Padma grinned, sitting at the chair opposite her old schoolmate. “How’ve you been?”

“Sue Li? Girl who asked to bring her own bed in first year? Witch who needed every cup of tea to be absolutely perfect before it got anywhere near her mouth? Is that you?”

Parvati smiled wickedly at her sister. Being stuck in the shop with Garrick for training allowed little outside communication. She missed her sister. 

“You could give me, your only sister, a giant hug. Please Pads, I’ve had such a rough day.”

Padma turned around at the sound of her sister’s voice, a smile lighting up her face. 

“VATI!” Padma said, nearly outright screeching. She ran to her twin and gave her a hug. “How are you feeling? Whom do I need to hex?”

“Yeah,” he sighed. “I know. But I’ve got to get some sleep. I think I could count the number of hours from this week on one hand.” And Terry wasn’t exaggerating.

He shook his head, not wanting to talk about it again. “Yeah, I will be. My mum died,” he said in a low voice without emotion. “I guess you didn’t hear. Sorry, but it wasn’t exactly something I wanted to share through the post, you know?” He smiled, hoping she knew he hadn’t just not told her. Even if they didn’t get together often, Padma had been one of his closest friends and he knew she would care. “So…will you sell me that draught now?”

“Terry,” she said, moving toward him. She placed her hands on his shoulders, taking a good look at his face. 

“I’m so sorry,” Padma said, at a loss for words. She’d been completely remiss in ignoring her friends, Terry especially. It wasn’t on him to tell her while she was away; she’d neglected her friends entirely in her desire to take a break. “I’m sorry I wasn’t here, Terry,” she added, squeezing his shoulders. 

Padma had seen one of her uncles become addicted to potions,  and she wasn’t about to see her friend do the same. “I’ll give you some of my Father’s tea, instead. It has calming properties and helps me sleep. And besides that, you also have the option to room with me for a little bit. It may not seem like it, but there’s enough space upstairs for at least three more people, and it’s no difficulty getting another bed up there.” Her smile was small as she looked imploringly at him. “What do you say?”

“Oh, right,” Neville smiled, slightly cringing at the memory. “I think I’ve heard too many of them that by now I’m practically immune to the sound.”

“Neville!” Padma gasped, horrified. “You’re not telling me you listened to mandrakes without earmuffs on? You could actually go deaf.”

She was fine. Completely, utterly fine. Why did that piss him off so much? Why couldn’t he be the better person she wanted him to be? Whatever. It was pathetic to pine over her. He needed to suck it up and find some other way to unwind.

“Like… you were in Diagon Alley?” His voice was still tight with irritation but a hint of confusion crept in. He so badly wanted to ask why now. But he didn’t. Maybe seeing her again, acting as if nothing ever happened between them would be a good thing. 

“Right well. Romilda’s not working tonight…” Blaise straightened, posture stiff. “But it’s not hugely busy in there if you want to come in.” He nodded his head in the direction of Verdant.

Blaise looked--well, as he always did, to Padma--like the boy she’d brought to Sunday dinners with her parents, like the one who’d first embraced her after the war had been fought, like home and adventure all at once. Now, however, he looked lost, as if he’d been dropped in a maze and couldn’t find the red thread leading back out. 

“I’d love to come in,” she said simply. Padma walked to him, ready to enter as if it were nothing, when she glanced at his face.  She couldn’t take this, not the awkward air between them, nor the suspicious furrow in his brow. And there it was, the scent she’d missed, of potions and wealth and him, the one she only ever met when they were snuggled in his silk sheets.

She turned to him without warning and enveloped him in an embrace. “Blaise,” she said, burrowing her face in his shoulder. “I missed you,” she mumbled, unable to keep it in.

“Maybe you weren’t thinking,” she challenged. Though by this point it was less of an insult than it was banter for Romilda. Shrugging, she put her hands in her pockets. “I’ve found that it encourages them not to test me.”

“You’ve got me there.” Padma laughed. “I’m curious: does it ever deter them from buying from you?”

I’m thrilled, Padma, thrilled.” Anthony sent her a pointed look, then shrugged his shoulders as if the tease wasn’t from him. “You’re the one who called me over, not the other way around.” He frowned. “Are you going somewhere? Are you going somewhere with who I think you’re going with?”

“Hush, you,” she said. “You know only you could have written such a lovely set of descriptions for my best-selling potions.” 

“I’m--I actually called you over to ask for a bit of advice,” she said, her shoulders slumped.

As irritating as dealing with drunken idiots was, Blaise couldn’t help but find a small bit of satisfaction in it. It was nice to get pissed off without drawing too much attention to himself. And lately, he hadn’t been getting any other releases. And this time, it was for complete lack of effort. 

He wasn’t the slightest bit interested in trying to pick up strangers and take them home. He’d had a brief, horrifying moment of ‘what if I’m turning gay.’ That wasn’t it at all but honestly, the thought was more of a comfort than ‘what if Padma managed to fuck me up? Fucking bitch.’

The sound of her voice, so soft and sweet ( a voice that had whispered sweet nothings during throes of passion ), made him turn sharply, his jaw still clenched. “Padma?” Ignoring her pleasantries, he said in a gruff voice, “What are you doing here?”

Padma hadn’t thought ahead. Visibly flustered, she looked at the ground, wondering what would happen if she turned around and walked away. Something kept her anchored at that spot; that same something compelled her to look him in the face.

She wanted to be honest, to tell him how often she’d remembered him against her will, how many nights she’d woken feeling the emptiness in the space beside her. Something in his tone, the clench of his jaw, gave her pause. He wouldn’t want to know. 

“Was in the area,” she said, maintaining the same even tone. “I thought I might stop by to see you,” and with hardly a pause, she added, “and Romilda. The Organization has been asking after the both of you.”

“D’you expect me to become a pillar of morality with the company I keep?” With an eyebrow raised, she crossed her arms, and sent a smug little smile in her direction. She turned back to her client, let them off with a warning and an ultimatum before sending them off. She turned back towards, Padma. “Something that will bring more revenue than your cute little wine enhancers.”

“I don’t know what I was thinking,” Padma said, an answering smile on her face. She certainly didn’t approve of the other girl’s methods, but she did see results, and it was nice to see people delight in their craft. “Do you threaten all your customers, then?”

“Sleep draught?” Padma said, frowning. “Not something I’d recommend regularly.” 

Her tone was laced with concern as she said, “You alright, Terry?” Her friend looked terrible, and Padma had no idea why.
