chrissy smiles at dae-ho as he promises. the smile quickly vanishes as he begins to talk about his dad. chrissy had met dae-ho's father — what kind of a girlfriend would she be if she hadn't met her boyfriend's parents? — and to put it kindly, she hadn't liked the man. he felt harsh, his mood steering the mood of his whole family, the kind of man who wanted manly sons and dutiful daughters. but she kept her mouth shut and was polite and was the perfect girlfriend anyway, and she'd never thought it was her place to tell dae-ho she hadn't liked him. it was his father, not hers. her feelings about him didn't matter, and they never would.

his words resonate somewhere within chrissy, conjuring up an image of her mother in her mind before she can stop it. she just wants chrissy to succeed, but she doesn't get it. she never has.

she lets out a sigh, a little huff that's barely noticeable. “sounds like my mother,” she mutters. stupid, stupid, she thinks to herself. this isn't about her. when would she get it through her thick skull that not every conversation was about her?

“that sounds hard anyway,” she says. “i mean, it's hard when parents don't get it. and i don't know about yours, but mine have never gotten it. not really.”

No,　she’s definitely right about that.　Maybe it’s owed to a generational divide,　storied history meant only to wedge an irreversible gap between Father and son.　Man-sik wants life one way,　Dae-ho another,　and they will never,　ever see eye to eye,　no matter the manufactured masculinity that Dae-ho wears as a costume,　deployed clandestine across muscled frame.　He tries to do everything right,　even swallowing his sense of self like salt water and finding himself a woman to love.　But Chrissy is too something or other,　not soft and subservient enough like his dear mother,　wasting her best years in fictitious approximation of athletics.　Dae-ho knows better than to correct his Father,　and so he bites imprints into his tongue ‘til they draw blood,　wisely choosing not to impart flawed viewpoint onto Chrissy now.

when it comes to stick-straight, paper-thin, seemingly docile girls like lucy— hunters have a bad habit of assuming. down to the rifles, down to the machetes, down to the are-you-sure's and the get-behind-me's; somehow they all navigate it the same. white knight, savior mentality, playing hero to a girl who doesn't need one. "ready to go?" a double checked glance over the motel room. "i figure we can get there by mornin' if we hustle."

Outch-! Talk about hitting where it hurts! Nam-Gyu almost recoiled, yet he really didn't think Dae-Ho would be that cruel! Casting him out to fend for himself with nothing but his bare hands and whatever adrenaline decides to conjure up...Nam-Gyu would rather not let it be like that though - hospital food tastes the worse when you can't see what you are putting into your mouth. He'd much rather be in a more comfortable position where he doesn't have to worry about anything and that he's safe always! Always, however, is something he knows that is unachieveable. It'd be such a perfect world if it was achieveable though, then he could put all of his focus into other more important goals. Even so, Nam-Gyu would rather be able to find this safety with however long he and Dae-Ho exists within the same area. Nam-Gyu could feel how his smile became more tight as he swallowed his surprise from Dae-Ho's words. Surely, he's just joshing.

"And suddenly you're so mean..." Said lowly as he lowered his head, "But that's perfect for the intimidation factor. Fuck the softness, am I right? Big fan of that." Then, a small laugh as he brushed his hair behind his ear, even repeating the motion over again to ensure it's behind his ear - at least he isn't being so rude as to grab and hold onto Dae-Ho's arm - See? He can control himself! Otherwise, he may have to pry himself off. Clinginess truly isn't an abhorrant act, nor does he feel shame for wanting to be clingy to Dae-Ho - to anyone else maybe, but specifically Dae-Ho it's different considering the circumstances. Nam-Gyu doesn't trust other employees here to properly clean cups after using them.
