MAMMAMIA | MÅNESKIN
MÅNESKIN comes back with MAMMAMIA: “We make fun of the critics and the Italian stereotype"
“MAMMAMIA was written after the Eurovision Song Contest, when we had several days to go to the studio. Unlike other times, this song was created after a few hours of work and we knew it would work. Sometimes it takes months to write a song but in this case we felt inspired. We tried to have fun and not take ourselves too seriously. It’s an ironic song, we’ve never written anything like that and we also wanted to make fun of the Italian stereotype a little bit.“ - said Victoria -. “We wrote it at a time when we were experimenting with new things and we are happy that it came out so naturally. The inspiration also came from the criticism after the victory: After the Eurovision Song Contest we got a lot of media attention. We got some criticism that we wanted to translate into a song. Many times you feel that you are doing something beautiful, but people don’t understand and they judge only by making bad comments. In the refrain there is also a part related to the sexual sphere: you can have tastes or preferences that people often think are strange but in reality they are lived in a very innocent way. Hence the difference in intentions between what you want to do and what others perceive.”
Damiano (who jokingly calls himself a “diva”) also added, regarding the criticisms: “Many people judge us for how they see us acting on and off the stage, that say that we are bad guys. Everyone criticizes us superficially but what actually makes us cool is the fact that we are Italian. We don’t want to teach life to anyone, we are always ourselves and we live everyday life trying to be the best version of ourselves. Obviously we don’t want to have wrong attitudes especially in public, but we do that for ourselves in the first place (…). When we are off stage we are not stars, we are ordinary people. We always try to separate our work from the rest of our life. We go out with our friends. In my opinion it also depends on your personality, if you are a dickhead then you stay a dickhead as you become famous, too. If you are a polite person you’ll be polite as a rock star, too.”
They are far from stereotypes. However, they are keen to underline their authenticity, an aspect that they underline several times: “We don’t know the real reason for this interest (from media and people). Maybe it’s because of our authenticity. People see that we have fun when we do our lives. People see our friendship and that we are normal 20-year-olds guys and they feel close to us. We are normal guys who did something big.”
About the look they said: “Since we were teenagers we have chosen how to dress, but not everyone has this luck. These are prejudices that prevent people from being themselves. Many people look at us as someone who can send a positive message, what we do is simply tell people that it’s okay to be who you want to be. We give voice to the most shy people who can’t express the discomfort of not feeling good about themselves. Talking about self-esteem can help a lot.”
