Reminder that parrots aren't native to Europe, and the ones in this painting come from 3 different regions of the world (the Neotropical Americas, Australasia, and the Indian Subcontinent, respectively. But they became common companions in aviaries, brought together through European colonization and conquest.
This painting and others will be part of my presentation at the upcoming History of Science Society's Virtual Festival on 9 December 2023:
"The Parrot in the Picture: Biogeographical Knowledge as a Decolonization Tool in Visual Culture Studies"
Although Europe has no extant native parrot species of its own, at least a few Indian and African species have been known to Europeans since

“This painting is from a now-dispersed album which contained another early Mughal natural history study, that of a cow and her calf. Akbar's grandson Jahangir is usually considered to be the great Mughal patron of painting of the natural world, but the doe and the cow are evidence that such studies were produced in the imperial atelier from the beginning of the reign of Akbar.”
this is so cool!!

The first photos are coming in from Artemis II, and they are stunning. Photos of our home planet from humans we are sending further than anyone has gone before.
And now two more. The first of which being taken by Commander Reid Wiseman just minutes from the other Blue Marble picture seen above, showcasing the effect of different camera setting on space photography. Pictures of our home, where all but four of us are looking up from.
Autistic Barbie 💜
A few months ago I made a post on dolls with disabilities that many of you seemed to like, there were two dolls with autism mentioned (Twyla and Hayden) but now Barbie has just released a new autistic Barbie in partnership with ASAN!
ASAN also made it a point to have the doll be a woman of colour as these two groups typically tend to go underdiagnosed.
Typically Barbie Fashionistas who represent a certain disability will have a fashion with a motif relating to their disability (diabetes Barbie (#242) has blue circles on her outfit and the Down’s Syndrome Barbies (#208 and #229) who have a blue and yellow palette, butterflies, and chevrons on their outfits). I have seen some people and organizations say that purple is a colour that can represent autism but there are several colours and symbols people die to represent autism, and with there being no confirmation from Barbie nor ASAN saying the dress colour has significance I decided not to mention it.
