We landed at Blenheim after three failed attempts to get seats at other neighborhood bars — busy night! Thankfully the bartender and the space were gracious, and the manhattan was well-made — well, made with care, but unfortunately garnished with a twist. Would give the restaurant another try, but would be more explicit with my order next time.

Pigalle 790 Eighth Avenue New York, NY 10019
A solid companion to a pre-theater meal in midtown. Pigalle is the only restaurant I trust in the theater district, and the escargot, French onion soup, and warm goat cheese salad never disappoint. The manhattan isn’t particularly memorable, but the buzz it leaves you with before the show makes the theater-going experience all the more enjoyable.

Clover Club 210 Smith Street Brooklyn, NY 11201
Another side saddle of manhattan, this time chilled in a beaker on ice — like the most refined science fair project at the high school, or the classiest organ removed from the drugged patsy. (And, yes, I just coined “side saddle” to mean something extra served on the side. Feel free to use it.)
Who knew this was such a prominent practice, or that one had to head to Brooklyn to find such a deliciously prepared manhattan? Perfect proportions, temperature, service — and extra! (The opposite of that great Jewish joke: “The food was terrible — and such small portions!”)
What’s more, the drink (and the follow-up I ordered) was accompanied by a delicious meal of oysters and steak, not to mention great company. A highlight of my recent cocktail intake.

When portions are as small as they are at this restaurant, even a normally sized cocktail can pack a punch. But like the carefully apportioned food, the manhattan was absolutely delicious. Well prepared with just the right sweetness and spice, served with food worth savoring in a lovely space.

Like Platform 9 3/4 or Hogwarts’s Room of Requirement, this restaurant seemed to emerge from the tenderloin mists when my friend and I needed it most, aching as we were for cocktails and a place to kill time between two events. Lupolo had opened just a few hours earlier — just in preparation for us, we imagined — and the lovely bartender Josh was a pleasure to have on the other side of the counter.

Scratcher 209 East 5th Street New York, NY 10003
Had a close call: the bartender almost garnished this drink with a twist. I stopped her mid-application of lemon rind, and she was none too happy when I requested a new glass. They had no cherries, so the true garnish on my Scratcher manhattan was the surly attitude of its preparer.

My first sip was wonderful, but then I offered a taste to my dinner companion — she’d never had a manhattan before and said this one tasted like cough syrup. After that, I couldn’t get the aftertaste of Robitussin out of my mind and mouth. Otherwise, a solid preparation.

Is this a bar or a malt shop? My manhattan came, gloriously, with an extra half-glass on the side for later — milkshake-style. And though the cherry was candied, the rest of the drink was lovely. Giving this 1.5x the rating I would if not for the liquid lagniappe.

You’re hard-pressed to find a better meal in Manhattan than Extra Virgin’s mushroom-crusted virgin chicken. And what better way to wash it down? This is a well-made manhattan — smooth, cool, and perfectly sweetened with its two true maraschinos. (But I really come for the chicken.)

Two for the price of one! Well, no, just identical orders from two patrons — and, between the two, five stars. Unfortunately, one on its own doesn’t do the trick: too cold and a bit watery from all the ice. And a candied cherry — not a true maraschino. Still, a nice way to start out a night out.

Solid foundation but faulty in the finish — the Chrysler Building without the spire. Though the mix of strength and sweetness is on point, the temperature is a few too degrees too high and the cherry is missing altogether. Fine to sip, but not good enough to savor.
