Locker Room Heartbeat
Nurse Emily Carter had just clocked out from her short shift at the University Hospital of Los Angeles. The locker room was quiet, though half the doors hung ajar, left that way by hurried hands in the rush of the day. Emily tugged off her scrub top and slipped into a bright turquoise bikini. The plan was simple—head straight to the beach. Just the thought of sun and ocean lifted the corners of her mouth into a smile.
As she bent down to fish sandals out of her bag, her eyes caught on the locker beside hers. It belonged to Dr. Alexandra Hayes—her supervisor, and the department’s brilliant cardiologist. Dangling from the open door was a stethoscope, its weighty chestpiece sliding dangerously close to the edge. Emily reached out on instinct, catching it before it clattered to the floor.
She was about to set it back when an idea struck her. Why not try it? She’d watched Alex use the instrument countless times, but had never once placed it against her own skin.
Emily slipped the earpieces in and pressed the chestpiece to her chest. At once, the silence gave way to a clear, insistent rhythm. Thump-thump… thump-thump. Her own heartbeat—alive, undeniable. A breath escaped her, and a smile spread across her lips. It felt strange, intimate, almost forbidden—like discovering a secret that had been beating inside her all along.
A gentle tap on her back made her flinch. She spun around—and froze. Dr. Alexandra Hayes stood there, watching her with raised brows, clearly surprised to find her young nurse caught with a stethoscope to her chest.
Emily’s pulse leapt into overdrive, hammering in her ears. Through the stethoscope, she heard every frantic beat amplified, betraying her nerves, her cheeks burning hot.
“I just… it was slipping, and I thought I’d…” she stammered, tugging the earpieces free. She handed the stethoscope back, embarrassed, her words tumbling over each other.
Alex took it from her, but instead of frowning, she smiled. Warmly. Almost playfully. “Maybe I should listen for myself,” she murmured, her tone carrying just enough professionalism to mask something softer underneath.
Emily blinked, startled—but then smiled back, caught in the moment. She stood there in her bikini top as Alex slid the earpieces in and leaned closer, pressing the chestpiece to her chest.
The world seemed to pause: the hushed locker room, two women standing close, and the rapid drum of Emily’s heartbeat, echoing in Alex’s ears as clearly as it had moments ago in her own.
Emily’s chest tightened, her heart thrumming as though desperate to give itself away. She tried to steady her breath, but she knew there was no hiding it. Not from the stethoscope. Maybe not from Alex, either.
And that was the truth she’d been avoiding—why Alex felt different from everyone else. Why she didn’t just admire her, but found herself quietly, hopelessly drawn to her.
After a moment, Alex lifted her gaze. “I can hear your heart racing,” she said, her voice playful rather than concerned. “Everything alright?”
Emily bit her lip, smiling despite herself. “Hard to stay calm when a gorgeous doctor is examining me.”
Alex’s smile widened. She set the stethoscope aside, closed the space between them, and kissed her. Softly at first, then with a warmth that made Emily forget every hesitation. She kissed back without a second thought.
When their lips parted, Alex looked straight into her eyes. “My shift just ended too,” she whispered. “If you’d rather skip the beach… you could come to my place.”
Emily didn’t hesitate. She smiled, nodded, and said, “That sounds better than any beach.”
They gathered their things, the lockers still half-open behind them, while the sun blazed bright over Los Angeles. Emily could feel her heart still pounding fast—but for the first time, she didn’t want it to slow down.
