sadly for poor loni, crossing her arms was very damning. in response, he crosses his own — laid back, confident, unlike the young woman leaning against the counter a few feet away from him. the threefold state of “ confused, enraptured, and annoyed ” was, in mannhauer’s experience, one of the best states to put someone into. it was not only entertaining, but it made the average person much easier to read.

Such an odd sensation it was to do this with a person. It was rare for her to give it out to a person she had only just met. Usually, it took a couple times to be asked or for it simply to happen naturally as the bond had grown enough to the point it was like ‘– huh wait a minute that’s weird’. 

    “Just don’t go too crazy now that youse have it, entiendes?” Hip pops out as she speaks, eyes narrowing ever so slightly up towards his own. 

the sudden shift in language catches him off guard as he returns his phone to his pocket. between that and the sudden shift in her hip, lovecraft’s got an eyebrow fully raised by the time he replies. ❝ ain’t got high expectations, eh? ❞ he says it with a smile, realising just how OUT OF CHARACTER he’s been acting this whole time. maybe it makes sense she’s so wary of him ...

slightly more weird because ... who’s MANNY?

    “Hmm, alright youse pass.” Had he not been able to think of one then she truly wasn’t going to give him her number. A person, man or woman, who couldn’t name a single book was not one she wished to be around. Loni always did prefer those who read as it allowed her to have rather in depth conversations about complex topics. While some friends weren’t those types she didn’t mind it, but for someone currently attempting to gain her number? Ah, that was a little more of a unique situation. She had to make sure he could at least give her enough mental stimulation to want to chat with him again, “I read that one years ago. Not a bad story. Pretty interesting. Not to mention I do enjoy the author quite a bit.” 

    With that she held her hand out, fingers flexing as she gestured for his phone, “Hand it over Manny boy.” Smirk forms as she eyes him, a strange sense of smugness overcoming her, “Unless you’ve changed your mind that is?”

she’s earned herself another one of those wry smiles of his. this was quite the woman he’d just encountered, between her ability to sniff out his inhumanity and her overall ... ECLECTIC, YET ENTERTAINING personality ... it was definitely worth keeping her number on hand. he lets out a chuckle as he produces the phone in question, sliding up on it with his thumb to open the dialpad as he passes it along.

even weirder than ... whatever that means.

    Truly, what a PUNCHABLE face he had. With arms folded over chest she scoffs debating whether or not to withhold it due to spite alone, but eventually she opts to give it. A decision she’d blame on her canine side as it, in her opinion, made her more curious about people and things than compared to when she was only a human. “You’re in sufferable hum- individual.” Human wouldn’t exactly work as a title, would it?

    “– Fine. Youse can have it.” If anything she’d just delete his if he proved to be more a hassle than anything else. Besides, she’d commit his scent to memory and would avoid him like the plague if she ran into him in such a case. “On one condition; name a novel that’s worth reading.” 

at this, lovecraft paused, smirk becoming thinner as the white ends of his hair revealed HOW OFF-GUARD the request had taken him. ❝ y’know ‘ow t’ make a man TINK, ❞ he chuckled, adjusting his glasses to help regain the composure he’d lost. he stopped for just a bit too long before finishing the sentence; ❝ ‘ don’ min’ it, vhough. ❞ then, there was another pause. this rapper was hard-pressed to cite a novel, of all things; it wasn’t that he didn’t read fine literature ( how else would he learn about culture? ), but when he did do so, it was usually books of poetry ... due in no small part to his CAREER. after a while, though, he narrowed his eyes and furrowed his brow, muttering to himself. ❝ vhis ... vhis side o’ ... ❞  finally, a snap and a finger pointed toward the wolf. ❝ THIS SIDE OF PARADISE, ❞ he answered at last, dropping his accent for a moment in exchange for a near perfect replication of her own, ❝ f. scott fitzgerald. dunno wha’ you consida WORFH readin’, bu’ vhat book says a lotta facts wiv a lotta good words ... er. i like ‘t. ❞

weirdest-est-er?

    “… That’s a new one.” Was that all? Had their strange little interaction finally come to an end? For a couple seconds she thought so, and already began to plan out what else she needed to hit before checking out- then he spoke. A question she clearly hadn’t been expecting given the fairly surprised look she donned, eyes wide as she gave him an incredulous stare. Her number? He seriously wanted her number…? 

    “What kind we talking? Favorite? Cause in that case I’d have to say four, but telephone wise yeah. There’s seven of ‘em in fact all together. Add three if you need the area code.” Unsure as to if he was teasing her or not she shot back with a rather sarcastic bit, simply waiting to see his reply so she could gauge her own follow up one. 

that one earned her both a narrowed glance and a thin smirk. as blunt as he was being beforehand, it was unlikely this stranger could have predicted just how adept lovecraft was at PLAY-FIGHTING WITH WORDS. ❝ mm, ‘ see. s’ are y’jus’ stallin’ ta ‘member it now? ‘cuz if ya need a li’l time, a man go’ nuffin’ but. ❞ with that tease came a raise of the eyebrows and a widening of the smirk. perhaps that look alone would be what she needed to decide how to respond. that was PROBABLY THE INTENT, anyway.
