Final Project and Artist Statement
For this project I wanted to create a piece that showed who I am. My inspiration to do this piece in that way, came from Richard Kern’s X is Y video. I wanted to include works that were done this semester. I pulled a lot of stuff from Tumblr. I felt really appreciative of what I’ve created. I wanted to create this ominous vibe similar to the X is Y video. If I had more time to work on this project I would extend the video length. I would have more time to pull from other sources and have more time to upload work I’ve done onto the internet.
My biggest concern was what to use. I knew I wanted to use Tumblr work. Perhaps I felt that there was too little work. Like I said earlier, if I had more time I would upload other work I’ve done onto the internet. Another concern is that my audience wouldn’t understand the meaning of the video. Though if that’s the case, i can whole hardheartedly understand, since I tried to recreate something similar to X is Y, while trying to fulfill the criteria of showing your identity.

For this project i wanted give my commentary on a problem with society. I felt that I could create a video and tell a story. My inspiration for this project came from Jon Rafman’s video Code of Honor. When I saw the video for the first time I was captivated by how he told a story and how he felt. After multiple re-watches i wanted to create something similar to this.
I created a video that really incorporated my feelings of this subject. The video uses a barrage of footage from multiple video games. I understand that Code of Honor used Second Life to get it’s footage, but I felt that was limited on how to record footage from one video game. I went with multiple footage from games because this medium has multiple genres that can appeal to multiple people. I had the voice over play over the footage because this was the best way to convey the message.

Richard Kern “X is Y” response
From the wide array of video artists that we covered in class today, Kern’s “X is Y” stood out to me. Upon multiple viewings, i can completely say that it relates to today’s hot topic stance of gun control. Watching this video and seeing how these normal, every day women handle fire arms is pretty scary. It’s certainly a thought provoking to see that anyone can wield a heavy-loaded and rapid firing weapon in their homes. I chuckled a bit in this one scene where a women reached under her couch and pulled out a gun.
The most interesting aspect for me from this video was the audio. To be more specific the part “666″ can be heard, especially being heard in the scene where this women was convulsing topless on a mattress. If i could ask Kern a question it would be, why? Why, add the “666″? It just felt random and out of place. To be honest i felt like i was watching some kind of deep web video.
When you analyze a title such as “X is Y’ i get the impression that Kern wanted to show that women are on equal footing as men rather than a commentary on gun control. Doing so by showing that they could handle and use guns just like men. In this whole video we only see one man and that was in the opening. So ya, this one just stuck out to me more. I felt enthralled and mischievous while watching this.

For this project, I explored the use of sounds. We went out to the 16th street mall to get sound recordings. Then we got introduced to the use of Freesound.org, for this experience of exploring this website I found a plethora of sounds that could be used for the eventual final project. Before I found out the protocol of the project, I had an understanding that we would have to collage many sounds together. When we were introduced to the use of the clip converter I found it to be an interesting tool that we could use to rip possibly any audio from Youtube. Though a buggy website, I had fun making a collage using it as one of many sources.
When we were introduced to the criteria of the project, I was a bit confused. I had no idea what it was that we were to accomplish. After being consulted by the professor, I worked on this project under the impression of having to create a sound collage compiled of the recordings we recorded from our trip to the 16th street mall, sounds from Freesound.org and clipconverter. I also searched Youtube for examples of sound collages, which kind of gave me a direction to create a sound collage that carries an ambient/nature theme. I was also inspired from listening to Kurt Cobain’s sound collages. This influenced me to have audio clips be reversed, inverted and altered, whether it be pitch or echo.
I understand that it may just sound like some random sounds compiled together for no reason but I really had no way to transition to another form of ambience sounds. I hope you have fun listening to my sound collage.
Warm Sunny Days
Sheets of snow splatter
A blanket of white, covers all
Slish, Slosh the air gets cold
People scurry in the realm of white
Bundled up, figures cleave through the hail
Slish, Slosh the boots get wet
Cars slide with care
Flakes cloud the windshield
Slish, Slosh, the tires get wet
The storm picks up the pace
Flakes rain like bullets
Slish, slosh the flurry grows
Hail meets its friend the ground
Mountains pile up
Slish, slosh the snow grows
Slishes become thwomps
Sloshes become stomps
Thwomp, stomp, no one outside
All in all, a door opens
A gentleman wearing a speedo
Proudly proclaims, “What a warm, sunny day”.

My work focuses on the usage of nostalgia. My pieces use my own perspective on what I perceive to be nostalgic, and what was impactful and memorable on my childhood. How I represented this was by using a series of gifs. Each gif will focus on a theme. Video games, literature, movie, etc. Each gif focuses on the usage of using an image and data bending the image to represent how when we recall memories from way back in our past they can come off as fuzzy.
I understand that people may be confused by the images due to the lack of contextual background that I have. But I feel that by having the viewers be confused and wondering what the images represent and what they are, makes it more personal to me. It’s viewed as my little secret. I also believe that my artwork works in that depending on the viewer’s background knowledge of what they’re seeing they’re left to wonder what the purpose of my thought process. They’re left thinking on what my purpose was and what I wanted to show.
While each piece shows varying images I understand that the lack of background knowledge may not come across what I want them to feel. My inspiration for using nostalgia was due to finding some old photos of me as a child. Also I have been playing some old video games as that was a big part of my childhood.
I love this it looks cool.
