The House's characters are now on Art Fight - as we are, once again, participating! It may, admittedly, take us a bit to finish our card - but we are here!
The fight is going, quite honestly, utterly dog shit.
Astarion's promised backup has, predictably, fallen through, the elf who-knows-where in the goblin camp doing who-knows what as the massive bugbear bears down on them. Lae'zel is locked in deadly combat with said bugbear, the hilt of her sword still slick with Minthara's blood. Shadowheart is so low on mana that she's pretty sure screaming at people will do more damage than trying to cast a spell, and their leader is...
Kneeled on the ground, above Minthara's corpse, on the section of the floor utterly soaked in the mess from where she bled out.
There's magic in his hands.
Barry stares at her, wide-eyed, from his part of the room. Lightning sparks on his palms, and he flinches- then seems to steel himself. "I think- I think I can do something. Can you… stand back, please?"
It should be nothing. Just another command from their leader. Barry Bluejeans is hardly a competent fighter at the best of times - honestly, it's a miracle any of them actually follow him - but something about the way he says it gives her pause.
Shadowheart steps back.
Barry smiles, weak and wobbly. The lightning plays over his palms again, brighter than any electricity should be. He raises his hands over Minthara's fallen body. Lae'zel yowls in pain as the bugbear gets a lucky hit in behind them, and Shadowheart nearly turns to look- but something stops her. A magnetism, maybe, something in the air, something about…
"All right. Here goes nothing." Barry says.
And he slams his palms down on Minthara's chest.
The air.
Changes.
Something brilliant lights up in Minthara's chest, brighter than bright rapidly burning through to a darkness that casts on the walls like a light in and of itself. She can smell something burning, edged with a scent like an animal's fur that rapidly burns through until it's charcoal edged with something she can't identify. Magic like brilliant crimson threads weave around them, piercing through flesh and bone- a binding, she knows, as rock-certain in her soul as the knowledge that she is herself, stitching something deep and fundamental to this plane. She feels like her very soul is burning from exposure to it, scorched cleaner than the planes of lost memory left by Lady Shar.
Something burns. Something snaps, crackles, is forced together through what can only be equated to the will of a god. The thread pulls taut.
Minthara's corpse gasps to life, drawing itself from the floor, drawing a weapon from a holster that was empty only seconds ago. Her chest is open, scorched as if something had exploded from within it, and every inch of her is burning with godlight.
Barry points. Minthara looks up, and the brilliant light in her eye sockets flares. The bugbear looks from Lae'zel's downed body, and in the split second before it is split with steel, his expression is shot through with fear.
The raised body raises her mace against her comrades. The battle begins to turn very, very quickly.
Okay, so, now that we have the basic idea of who the Vegetable Lamb is out, we can offer some fun extra notes.
Temples of the Vegetable Lamb are considered "unholy" by other religions. Other gods cannot step foot there by default, and would be extremely uncomfortable if they tried. This makes the Vegetable Lamb's temples a very good neutral ground - it's mostly made from the sorts of christian viewpoints that see demons as something that can only exist in absence of god, and a lot of its general abilities are drawn simply from the fact that most of its supernatural powers are from being an Ungodly God.
It generally appears as a jacob's sheep lamb, also for catholic reasons. It may also appear as a man with the head of a goat, or a man with the head of a four-horned sheep, or a woman with the head of a four-horned sheep, or a kid with horns, or any manner of things. Sometimes, it has the demon spade-tipped tail, but it doesn't like that form very much so it doesn't use it often. It does, however, think horns are pretty cool.
It's... something like ten, at time of The Lightning Thief, in terms of time that it has existed as a god. It generally appears in humanish forms at an age similar to this. No matter what form it appears in, it has unnervingly steady eyes and pupils slit like a keyhole. It is unnerving to look at because it has an air of power that makes it seem far beyond its years (all ten of them).
It is a "crossroads" - it is capable of seeing what lies down the roads, and ushering people down them. This is sort of divination, but it does not see as far, and it does not carry the sort of certainty that, say, a prophecy might have, because none of what it can see is a certainty. It is capable of divining some things about Percy specifically because of the spectacularly esoteric form of this seeing meaning that the effect preventing Percy from being subject to divination, prophecization, et cetera, are ineffective - none of its roads are set, and none of them are capable of defining their subject, which means it does not run into Percy's inability to be foretold.
The thing about gods is, they are formed with belief.
A god is made from belief and worship. The things that people think are true, and the things that they revere. Once a god is formed, it no longer matters how reverent the worship is - as long as it is worshiped, as long as it is believed in, as long as tribute it made to it, it will simply change to fit the worship it receives.
The type of worship, it turns out, does not matter.
The Vegetable Lamb is not made as traditional gods are. When it forms into existence, there is no religion in its name. It is made into being in a soup kitchen, and it knows of itself two things.
One: It is one of many. Though it has not known it before, it is the sort of thing that is grown, nodes upon nodes, fruit on a plant of grass roots. It comes into being with awareness of dozens of buildings across the country, and it knows each and every one of them as its body, fruit on the plant of itself. It is the sort of thing that grows and branches, and it is the sort of thing that gives - and it has given, since long before it was first awake, since long before it was first alive.
Second: It is a demon, and its nature is an antithesis to much that is holy.
It is aware, for a moment. It exists, conscious but unpolarized. And then, in one of its temples, something is given, and worship is received, and it becomes aware of one more aspect of itself.
Three: Its purpose is to give. To feed those who cannot feed themselves. So long as it is willing to do so, it will persist. If this spirit dies, it will falter, and it will fail.
It is a thing that was made for charity, and so it begins to make things which to give.
The Vegetable Lamb is a young god. It is new to the world, and its worshipers do not know it exists. It still exists, regardless.
For now, this means little. In a few years, it will mean a lot. But it has to get there, first.
is that one post that goes like "i fixed a problem that i saw my manager do once and i did it faster so i get to take his skin i get to take his skin" an anyone post. we were thinking vi but we dont actually know
The House Vi does this every time that it does something it's seen Kjdrira do once and it is too small to actually, like, effectively do anything like skin-taking, and also doesn't have the dexterity for it, but it brags to the network about it and sometimes chews on Kjdrira for bragging rights and releasing the immense amounts of energy contained within it that it cannot properly release because the exact same rocks that let it store such massive stores of energy also prevent it from having a proper range of motion
We cannot possibly stress enough that ZBT-159 does the exact same shit that Kabbu does but with less memories and more thinking through it (to come to the exact same conclusion)
Normal Kabbu does dumb reckless shit and has Vi go "don't fucking DO that you could have died like FIFTEEN TIMES in the past ten minutes and for what??? some random termite guy???" and ZBT-159 does reckless shit and has Vi go "okay. we think something fucked up in your priorities and planning again. let's, uhh, rejig that again, buddy" and then they go along with that because they are well aware that is an expression of affection despite being equally aware it will probably never actually work.
ZBT-159 fundamentally is a guy who spent The Horrors of the lab caring deeply about everything while working on the most shoddily duct taped together brain imaginable, had to reserve power to not violently shatter on the floor from caring too hard, and sort of held on to a lot of that stuff while being optimized to Work Better Without Dying Badly, and also happens to be in charge of making sure that all of the colony members it hangs out with do not self-destruct spectacularly.
This means that they have lost like 50% of its tendency for self-destruction because if they go down both Vi and Leif will probably violently tear themselves apart within the week, and maybe rip each other's throats out, because them killing each other violently in fits of wretched beast grief and emotion would be quite bad for them and also the colony, and Vi is better at programming solid priority systems than actually putting them into action itself.
The improved priority system has not, despite best efforts, optimized out the fundamental Kabbu tendency to fling oneself headfirst into danger to help people. It has made it moderately more survivable for the people around ZBT-159, because they will now think twice about flinging themself headfirst at The Beast and attempt to ensure the safety of teammates first, but they'll still fight The Beast, they'll just do like a handful of other things first and probably have a plan for doing it before actually flinging themself at a creature.
@mantisgodsaus fun ways to ring in the new year start fistfighting your dead best friend without stopping for a single second to think about how weird that is because you are a beetle with room for exactly one (1) thought in your head and that thought at the moment is you just saw them smack your currently alive best friend across the room and you're going to Get Them for that
truly some people have no genre savviness whatsoever. A girl came back from the dead the other day and fresh out of the grave she laughed and laughed and lay down on the grass nearby to watch the sky, dirt still under her nails. I asked her if she’s sad about anything and she asked me why she should be. I asked her if she’s perhaps worried she’s a shadow of who she used to be and she said that if she is a shadow she is a joyous one, and anyway whoever she was she is her, now, and that’s enough. I inquired about revenge, about unfinished business, about what had filled her with the incessant need to claw her way out from beneath but she just said she’s here to live. I told her about ghosts, about zombies, tried to explain to her how her options lie between horror and tragedy but she just said if those are the stories meant for her then she’ll make another one. I said “isn’t it terribly lonely how in your triumph over death nobody was here to greet you?” and she just looked at me funny and said “what do you mean? The whole world was here, waiting”. Some people, I tell you.
Was reading thru ur tags for the fucked up mirabelle au. Wdym loops job is being tormented by shadow people
Well, you see, the party is dead from the start, but they aren't gone yet, not entirely. They persist as shades and spectres, certainly, limited to pre-determined paths, but they still exist, in whatever form they have taken.
Odile, we believe, has already been mentioned in our fic, but though she exists as a figure, and can be seen out of the corners of people's eyes, she can only exist out of the corners of people's eyes - as a shape, an indistinct idea, a something that barely exists. She is a figure. A shadow in the mirror. A shape of something, that can be seen out of the corner of your eye, but that vanishes when you turn to look at it.
She is dead, and she no longer has place in the lives of the living, and so any gaze turned upon her will banish her from existence as something that no longer is. A shadow-steeped form, a space in the shape of a woman who died months ago. She can only exist in gaps of perception, the place where you no there is no one, but where your brain tells you there could be.
Thankfully, Loop isn't a person anymore! They cannot banish her by turning a gaze upon her because they aren't people in the same way s normal human would be, and so they can perceive the figure looming in the shadows perfectly well, and honestly they aren't a big fan of the fact that the spectral traces of their party members appear to be following them around.
beeb page. one wauce and two zombeeb in there too
arriving in your mailbox in the middle of the night to deliver 1 quastion. in the sexy bugs au does upper snakemouth lab... Exist. we would think not because of the [thing you've told us but we're assuming is a secret/spoilers] but we're still curious. and if it does still exist then Why
The labs still exist. The inhabitants... (we make a vague wiggly hand gesture) it's fine don't worry about it. Upper Snakemouth was the former development grounds for ground-breaking new assistive technology, with the old biotech used to make taxidermy constructs like The Watcher used in tandem with new Bee technology allowing for direct integration of new parts into a body plan.
Unfortunately, the lab was abandoned before it got too far after a structural failure flooded most of the place, and it was evacuated. Strangely, though, there seem to be rumors of new bugs around there lately? Ehh, we're sure it's nothing.
cover for @mantisgodsdomain ' s fic "Held Together With Hope and Medical Twine". It's a normal fic for a normal au. :)

sacrificing isabeaus body hair in order to make him a zombie. isastein. Steinbeau.
If ZB-856 was capable of it, it would absolutely have overhauled its entire body and half of its brain years ago. Unfortunately, it lives in a persistent resource desert, and its experimental hardware is very close to being the single most delicate, finicky, and difficult-to-modify set in the entire colony, because almost all of its brain is formed on crystal shards delicately pieced together into its neural core, and moving almost anything has a high probability of breaking the entire array. There is no one more disappointed about this than Vi.
