Paul Scholes “I don't think he has been successful as he would have liked to have been“

As we all have, United Legend, Paul Scholes also had his word about Falcao. We can all agree that Falcao is a great player with the same abilities as any other world class striker in the world. It seems though as the timing he came to United - after his injury - was really bad. Some may say he was the right player at the wrong time. As Scholes says

"You have to say from an injury point of view it has taken him a while to get back and if he has a run of games I'm sure he will be fine but whether it is at Manchester United, I'm not too sure."

As Scholes says, his future seems to be minimal at Manchester United. I don't think Van Gaal will invest 40 million pounds more to take the chance of him coming back to form. But then again it is probably not a matter IF he will come back in form, but WHEN. So is he worth it? Scholes certainly thinks the same as us after he left the field on Sunday.

"You watch the game the other day and you see him coming off the pitch and waving to fans and you have to think that that is probably it."

Manchester United 1 - 1 Arsenal FT Match Review

WHAT HAPPENED? I am not sure what to think of this game - at the moment. We had them, the game was ours and no Arsenal should ever have gotten a goal. We showed that we can easily make it as a title contender, and through every game between top teams we have continued showing exactly that. Our only problem was not pursuing the second goal enough.

After our goal things seemed as they would go our way, as id we might get 2nd or at least 3rd place. But the lack of offensive continuosity probably costed us the 2 points.

Two great positive things I got from this game: Chris Smalling, Phil Jones. Our two "young" defenders showed that they are a duo capable of playing at the high level that is required by any Manchester United player. Phil Jones crawling header tackle

was just amazing. He showed PASSION, BALLS and I'm talking about GREAT BALLS OF FIRE. That is what I love seeing in a central defender. And Chris Smalling showed that he has what it takes. His positioning was great and he was hardly ever beaten by anybody. Great performance from our two central defenders.

Besides our two central defenders the man of the match also had another amazing performance. Ashley Young won the man of the match award, arguably rightly, for another - as I mentioned - amazing performance. His speed and dribling skills are getting better by the game, every time he has the ball it is almost a sure goal threat, which is the reason of a winger, the way modern football is being played.

Personally I thought Rojo also had a really good performance. The only downside of Rojo's game is/was the amount of time he keeps the ball in his feet. His style is quite resembling of Evra's style but he doesn't seem to have the capability of doing it at the same level of intensity as Evra did. But let's hope time and experience will fix that.

This game was not only a game about the third place on the table, but it also marks the beginning of Victor Valdez' career at Old Trafford. Although he marked it with an unlucky own goal by Blackett he did get his debute in a great game. I wish this isn't the last we will see of De Gea on Old Trafford but I wouldn't mind seeing a fight between the #1 keeper place between Valdez and Lindegaard. They are both brilliant keepers as well.

Player of The Year: David De Gea

So it's official. David De Gea won Sir Matt Busby's Player of The Year award. 100% deserved, I am sure nobody can say anyhting else however much of an increase in form Fellaini, Smalling and Young have had this season.

The Spanishman has given us more points, singlehandedly, than any other player this season (or any other season). And the fact that his career has bursted so much since he came to United is what, in my opinion, should make him stay and not even consider moving to Real Madrid. As Van Gaal has said "They will not love you like United does" or something along those lines.

Anyhow, when it's all said and done, if he stays or not, I wish him the best for all he has given us, and all we have given him.

Thoughts on Luke Shaw’s First Year At United

Luke Shaw's season might not have been what he first dreamed about when he assured in his mind he was going to sign for Manchester United - full of injuries and no real title.

Take away the injuries, though, Shaw's season has been quite a good one. He is not even 20 years old and plays with a pace mostly unmatched by his opponents. His attacking will has been outstanding, and besides being attacking minded he has not been too bad defending either. To me, judging by this season's form, Shaw and Young on the left side constantly would be the best left side we could provide.

So, what makes Shaw so special? his pace? his power? the way he constantly provides 110% of his energy? or maybe all of these things combined with an age, as mentioned, of 19 years old. This boy has what it takes to become one of the best defenders we have ever seen.

The two I don't like about Shaw would be, being so injury prone, and also being too offensive, to the point where he loses his positioning and he ends up leaving a gap. His positioning will eventually grow on him as he grows too, but about being injury prone... There is probably nothing we can do but cross our fingers and hoping he won't get injured.

Tactical thought on the poor display against Southampton

Whenever United played with a back three, the players were struggling in both attacking and defensive phase of the game as they were all over the place. But it doesn’t mean that United should abandon this system of play altogether because the 3 men defence provides the solution to the lack of genuine fullbacks and holding players or in the case of against Arsenal and Southampton, to mitigate the high pressing tactics of both teams. Besides, with an additional defender, it can release an extra player to move forward, contrary to the general opinion that 3 at the back is a defensive system.

But it is not easy to execute this system of play because of the demand being put on the 3 centre-back as their roles are the hybrid of fullback, centre-back and midfielder. In defensive phase, they have to move to the touchlines like a fullback to stop the wide players and go into midfield areas to press like a midfielder, apart from the responsibility of a centre-back. Due to the extra player in the 3 men defence, in the attacking phase, the centre-backs have bigger responsibility in building up the play because the holding player wouldn’t able to drop deep to help them to start the attack as in the case of playing 2 centre-backs because it will create congestion. Thus, either one of them have to release the ball forward or bring the ball out to build up the play either through the centre or wide areas. When the play is in the final third, sometimes, they also required to move higher up the pitch to support the play at the touchlines or half-spaces. All these are akin to the role of a fullback and holding player.

United’s centre-backs – Jones, Smalling, Rojo and Evans – have the right attributes to carry out this 3 men defence system as they have the mobility to play in different positions and comfortable enough on the ball but just do not have the enough know-how and understanding of the game to make the right decisions in different situations as they have been playing with a back-four in their whole career. Hence, this explained for the poor display whenever they were playing with at 3 the back.

In the 2-1 win against Southampton, there were a few good signs that they were starting to understand the role a bit more better but still lack the audacity and quick decision-making to impose themselves better in the play. The poor positional play by the midfielders did not help the matter and in fact, it was the main reason for the awful performance against Southampton. As mentioned in my previous piece, Michael Carrick was the better option to play in the holding role in front of a back-four as he can drop deep to buildup the play using his passing ability and defensively, he can offer better protection as he is a good reader of the game  but with the 3 men defence, Daley Blind’s mobility and positional sense will be better suited. It was the case against Southampton as Carrick unable to impose himself in the game due his positioning which caused some congestion at the back when building up the play.

First 30 minutes.

From the beginning of the game United shows great promise with lots of possession, but without ‘causing any real threat. Most attacks end up in nothing and there is a lack of pace. As I said, it seems promising, but we need to improve if we are to get a satisfying result.

Rooney is not in form from what I can see. His wide passes towards Valencia are not as they usually are, and his passes towards Van Persie lacks inspiration.

Defensively we look quite solid and Valencia’s dribbling is great, too bad he can’t send a decent ball into the box.

  From the 30th to the HT.

Right after the 30 minute mark we suddenly started looking more dangerous forward with lust and creativity.

At the 41st minute Rooney did a good run laying the ball of for Van Persie which ended in a good chance that was blocked by Gardos.

Towards the end of the first half nothing except Di Maria’s shoot at the 45th minute was worth mentioning.

First Half impression.

 All in all our performance was lacking the attacking lust and creativity that we would expect having Rooney, Mata, Di Maria and Van Persie in the same roster. We look calm, but slow. Hopefully we can keep the patience and add to it in the second half.

  HT to 60th minute

A slow start for the second half without any real change from the first half, We will need a good tactical change if we want to beat Southampton’s defense, because THIS is just not enough.

60th minute to 75th minute

At the 60th minute Van Persie got substituted by Ander Herrera which was a good change, maybe to bring Rooney a bit forward for him to get some chances as Robin didn’t seem to be at it today.

Lots of substitutes by both teams towards the end as both teams are changing mindsets to take the three points Shaw. Shaw, coming back from a injury having only played against Yeovill a bit, looks alright. He still needs to strengthen up though.

On the 70th minute we conceded a goal. Bad defense as the ball ricocheted to a Southampton player, shoot by the post and the rebound was calmly put in goal by .

This seems to call for a tactical change by United. And so it goes as United brings Fellaini in for Di Maria.  

75th minute to FT

The tension of the game is building massively as United is going for at least a point, if not three. Mata with two great chances in a couple of minutes. Chances that a player of his caliber should have scored, maybe not from the cross as it landed on his right foot, but the second chance should have been scored.

United seems to do the long-balls-to-Fellaini-tactic as the options and the time is running out against the tight Southampton team.

It is getting quite clear that this is not going anywhere.

Out of the whole game we have to keep the positives and try to forget the negatives as I am sure Van Gaal sees what we can see as well. 

In my opinion, using Di Maria that high is a waste. We should play Di Maria at Shaw’s place to the left and use Falcao. We have a superb attacker in our team which we don’t use enough. If we buy him it’s going to be like Torres for Chelsea if he keeps up like that.
