Summers heat had never been a friend to the now retired hero, the constant travelling of his youth only worsened by the grueling, deadly, extreme temperatures. Never one to think he would one day be able to put down roots, he could only thank Nayru that he now had a home he could cool off within.
Being at odds with his patron goddess Farore hadn't caused the trouble he'd expected. If anything, he got the feeling Farore was attempting to apologize in her own non-apology way, for the years Link had been trapped as a fairy against his will. Now the forest he'd settled in had grown far thicker with life than when he'd arrived. Edible plants were unnaturally abundant, everything he could desire, berries, fruit trees, wild onions, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes... Enough mushroom species to write his own book if he so chose. The thick canopies above kept the air cool below, while allowing enough heat and sunlight to meet the forests needs. All balanced in a way to provide for the reclusive adult.
Ever since his journey, where he'd been forced to enter the sacred realm and travel through the blighted lands in a bid to exterminate the source poisoning Hyrule, all of Hyrule was now seeing changes in climates. The work of the church and hopeful citizens revitalizing the lost lands was reshaping the environment. Once vast deathlands of blighted soil was healing and growing anew. Regular blessing ceremonies purged the residual poison from dead dusty soil, Farore's storms returning to places they hadn't been in centuries, bringing life back in thanks. Link was certain the reforesting of countless lands would drastically alter all of Hyrule, but his job was done.
For now, he had made great use of his time by building small forts to test ideas, discovering through enjoyable trial and error how best to keep his home cool or warm. His current temporary yet functioning design was based on ideas he'd gotten from the Sheikah summer village, and ideas from ancient store houses in the grasslands. Using a river to cool the home, and a slanted rock stacking technique to make water resistant walls.
He could talk a persons ears off about the designs, but the most defining parts were related the the sheikah shape of the roof, the odd details put into it, the huge water wheel turning in the river, and the constant fake rain falling like a sparkly curtain all around the little house. The roof looked to be made with a careful grid of interconnected wood poles, and slanted in two halves from the centre. A thin mat of grass had been layed atop the grid, grass meticulously tied into countless long narrow bunches, saturated with a now dry odd dark substance, and tied together in ascending rows. Link had used the grass mat as insulation to support the flat ceramic tiles creating the waterproof layer, the dark substance working as a glue. These tiles had been his first successful attempt making such things for a home, and he'd put a lot of thought into their design. He doubted their longevity but he'd still put in his effort. The tiles simple design sported two divets near the top, used to secure it by sewing it with cord threaded into the grass mat, and an indented line from top to bottom for guiding the water evenly across the roof. The water came from a suspended "pipe" with staggered holes, secured at one end by a tree, and the other end the basin water collected in by means of the water wheel.
Seeing such a strange, perpetually raining house in the forest would surely catch anyones eye. The walls of the home were woven saplings and grass mats, some of the mats rolled up like to allow the sun and air in. The floor was made of thick logs, patched with coloured clay between the rounded dips to make it even. It was all a work of art.
Unfortunately, there was more to life than just making cool forts until you can build a house that doesnt fall. Namely, not being naked when you don't want to be. At the moment, Link was relegated to wearing his formal fairy tunic as he grumpily patched up his Hylian clothes. He was down to two shit tunics that were more patches than original, and his reserve tunic was already staring down demotion. His reserve tunic was meant for going into town when he needed supplies, and it was starting to look like the time was here. Unless he wanted to risk wearing formal Hylian-sized fairy clothes, which wasn't a safe bet. All but one pair of leggings had suffered as well. Becoming two pairs of shorts, and something that would make peeing at night easy. The surviving leggings were the overly elegant fairy leggings to match the tunic he wore, and he didn't want to damage the outfit. Having one nice formal outfit set aside for emergencies felt important somehow.
So there he sat in his sparkling forest home, dressed in a tunic as deep green as the trees emerald hues, embroidered with a golden tree, branches and delicate leaves glittering with the reflected sunlight. His blond hair was braided in a beautiful crown around his head, carved wooden pins holding it neatly. Gentle waves of loose gold hair looked like a fairytale drawing, softly falling around his ears and the back of this neck. Tattered clothes hanging on a clothes line in front of him while he did his best with a sewing needle.
