Tumblr loved the MTV Video Music Awards last night! Data is still coming in from the event, but preliminary numbers show that more than 686,000 people generated 1.3 million posts and 1.1 million likes on Tumblr on Sunday. That’s huge.
If you watched the show, it won’t shock you that the most talked-about musical group was One Direction (GIF above from morepayne), and the most talked-about performance was Miley Cyrus. Lady Gaga and 'N Sync were also very popular.
The top post so far is this picture of Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, and Billy Ray Cyrus from gamebrah, with more than 40k reblogs and 30k likes. Check out its incredible reblog tree - more than half its reblogs were nine or more degrees removed from the original post. It got 148 reblogs directly from followers, and another 40,300 from the rest of Tumblr. That’s some serious amplification!

Sports fans don't take kindly to being insulted, and there was a strong reaction to Wednesday's column about the starting times in college football. If it's not a night game or weekday scheduling, it's the absurdity that most Cal and Stanford games list only "TBA" for starting times this season. The trend is all about the Pac-12's obsession with television.
Before the new television contract, it was a way to get something that maybe you weren’t getting in the past — exposure,” Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard said of unique scheduling. “It used to be that if you took it, you got a little more money, but now the money’s divided equally. “We’re all making a ton more money than we ever imagined, and the deal in the Big 12 is that we have to provide four Thursday night games. “While some schools say they’re not doing it, we look at it as an opportunity for Iowa State.”
During ACC Commissioner John Swofford’s July remarks, he called 2012 a “remarkable, monumental year,” and that ACC football has unlimited potential. How the league does in those nonconference games will decide just how monumental 2013 will be. As Swofford said, “It’s time we win some of the games.”
ESPN, in conjunction with Paragon Marketing Group, will air nine weeks of the nation’s best high school football games during the 11th annual GEICO ESPN High School Football Showcase across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. The 13 games in the season-long series are in addition to the 13 previously announced ESPN High School Kickoff games. In total, ESPN will feature the country’s leading college football recruits with 45 ESPN 300 players in-action and 23 State Champions taking the field between the 26 slated games in the Kickoffand Showcase.
“The economy factors into this as well, but the technology of television has made that an appealing option,” SEC executive associate commissioner Mark Womack said to the Chattanooga Times Free Press. “We have to try to make the in-game experience in the stadium as good as it can be.” One improvement has been allowing stadiums to show multiple replays of controversial or impressive plays on the jumbotron. “Before you weren’t permitted to do that,” said University of Florida associate athletics director of external affairs Mike Hill, according to the Gainesvill Sun. “The idea is that the in-stadium experience is something that is competing now with the living room experience, and you get a million replays at home. So we need to do a better job at the stadium with that.”
