I didn't realize how starved I was for a depiction of girlhood in anime that was not for the male gaze until I started watching Witch Hat Atelier.

I find myself subconsciously bracing for a voyeuristic camera angle or inappropriate interaction, and I feel a huge sense of relief when that doesn't happen. And then I get mad that I've been conditioned to expect that in anime about young girls.

In conclusion, I love Kamome Shirahama, and I love women in media.

there's this really neat thing that Qifrey does-- as the girl's teacher, and for how he came into witch society-- that reeeally demonstrates the distance he keeps from his little family

his initial instinct, when threatened, is to be violent and subdue the percieved 'assailant' by whatever means necessary -> this is worth noting, because he's the only one in the atelier with this instinct. Olruggio and the girls' default to true-blue witchiness, and seek to use magic to help without causing too much harm

a good anime-friendly example of this: the introduction of the Knights Moralis [Richeh tackles Easthies arm, Tetia sets the pennant on fire-- just weak enough to burn out before reaching anybody. Qifrey puts a blade to Easthies throat]

even Coco, an outsider, has the witchy instinct to use magic for helping-- as seen with the dragon, where she vyes for a peaceful way to subdue it -> whereas, Qifrey makes a dragon that dwarfs it and... essentially waterboards//half drowns the thing

it's really interesting, to me, because Qifrey is their teacher-- he's the one that's supposed to be ingraining that instinct into them, rather than contradicting his own teachings

i know in the translation from manga to anime, a lot of things get cut or moved around-- and I understand why-- but i really wish they would've kept Tetia's initial... discomfort w/ Coco -> she was NOT rocking w/ this girl for any reason; she did not want to be around her, or help her, or really even be alone w/ her

it's sorta blink and you'll miss it, and especially overshadowed by the worry she displays over Agott's stunt, but Tetia gives Coco very short answers or hesitant ones when it's just the two of them-- it's very obvious she wants to get away -> she's never outright rude, or hostile, like Agott is-- or outright avoidant, like Richeh is-- but her normal warmth only really peeks through in group settings. At least, until after the dragon
