one thing we don’t talk ! about ! enough is that meeting new people as adults feels largely insignificant because your aggregated life experiences suggest that most people won’t have an impact on your life. so it’s only in hindsight that we can reflect on significant or foreshadowing moments from the first encounter with fellow adults who later become good friends. remember when we first met a few years ago and you told me I looked like that one celebrity?

whereas when you’re young, you often meet people in collectively new settings—a first day of school or work, initiation into a club/team—and so the pretense of those moments prime you to assign heightened significance such that while you’re living out those firsts you can often perceive your life shifting in real time. I think I’m going to be connected to this person/these people forever.

one day you wake up and you’re 30.62 years (11,173 days) old and almost all your friends are engaged, partnered, married and you’re not and it’s not your end goal per se but it comes up in little ways like the night’s curtain call when pairs start pairing and yawning and slowly exiting together and arms wrap around hips and your apartment is clean and airy and welcoming but if a welcome welcomes in the forest are you still alone? and you know the answer is no because alone comes from within and you’re taking all the right steps and you’re buying the linen sheets for breathability and you’re moisturizing and you’re integrating fitness and you’re bringing people together but if those people are already together are you redundant? and you know that no you’re singular there’s no other you but maybe someday soon there’ll be someone that verifies that indeed there’s no other you and then walks into that forest with you so that when a tree falls you can hear it together
