Here’s a compilation of the TKYxMEL map (with a new edit, thanks to @mapsofnowhere).  I’ve included some of the signage for some of the stations as well.  (Some of the colours and line names may be different as the process went along).   Enjoy!  With this project now done, I’m moving onto some Ice Age geofiction, woo!

TKYxMEL: Here’s a final version of the Melbourne version of the Tokyo subway map, based on a fictional Melbourne subway network that would connect the surrounding activity centres.  It also incorporates one of my other fantasy maps, the 2048 Melbourne Tram map as well as the current Melbourne Rail Network and V/Line.  Let me know what you think.

I’d suggest moving the coast near the legend so that the legend is only on one background colour, and post a couple close ups to show off some more detail.

Next project: GEOFICTION!  Ice Age Geofiction!  How Melbourne might look if Port Phillip looked the way it did 10,000 years ago.  Very early stages of a geofiction project, I’ll finally get to use my digital sketch pad for mappy maps!

First up, here’s my 2047 fantasy train map for Melbourne.  It’s based off a proposed system by Liam Egerton for an Urbanist article in the Crikey blog.  It was also inspired by Bernie Ng’s Metro map. I’ve fleshed it out a bit and added a few extras just for fun.  I’ve also included a preview of the next map which is a 2047 fantasy tram map, you can see parts of this in the station directory on the right panel.  I plan on making a sequel called the 2070 Metro map, which will be slightly more complex and include some orbital routes.

Iakovos Volkov

When Athens-based artist Iakovos Volkov was only ten years old, he was filling handmade sketch books with drawings of a city he imagined. These works are intensly focused, including buildings, roads, railway lines, parks and many other details. As a child, Volkov had never seen architecture renderings. He intuitively drew his fantasy city from an aerial perspective. These images are just a small sample of the many drawings he made. To see a picture in a larger format, click on the photos. In 1991, when Volkov was 8 years old, his family emigrated from the Russian port city of Novorossiysk to Thessaloniki Greece. Today Volkov builds site specific sculptures in abandoned places in Greek cities. An article is being prepared for Sculpture magazine that will focus on Volkov’s recent sculpture.
