The Call
Do you hear the call for help, the cry in the night? Do you really see the plea, silent and looming like a sea?
You answer yes, of course. I always hear and see.
But do you really?
Did you see them shutting down? Pulling away? Smiles to frown?
Those random bad jokes they told, now stopped cold?
The laughter in their eyes replaced with sorrow and sighs?
You shift and look around now. Uncomfortable with the truth. You didn't notice, hear, or see.
That's the problem of course. You profess a lie - you don't actually hear or see. You just pretend then have the nerve to sound surprised at the end.
