Suddenly, Yang would be attacked by a ferocious beast! And by that, it was actually just Lily pouncing onto the blonde huntress's foot. She got her right where she wanted her!

Oh no! The Yang beamed and knelt down, giving the beast lots of pets and scritches behind its little kitty ears! Maybe that would appease it?

The Lily has been appeased as she purrs from her tiny ears being scritched. She would even give Yang’s fingers a few licks to show her appreciation.

Yang beamed, loving that her fingers got such cute li'l licks! Standing up and scooping the little Lily up, she whispered,

"When was your last meal, huh? Did mama feed you recently...?"

The uncomfortable buzzing sense of wrong, wrong didn’t fully dissipate, but the simple breakdown of priorities did help. They could do this, he knew that. He just had to try not to stare his unease in the face, to address one thing at a time.

Another breath, another nod.

“Yeah. Okay. We’ll get locks when we’re out, then, instead of fixing these. That way no one else could have keys.”

“Agreed,” Yang nods, “After that, what do we want to do? Buy food? Then scrolls after that?”

It was a start--one step, then another, then another...

Given their situation, it did make the most sense to hide out and keep quiet, find a way to make a living for themselves. Still, that didn’t stop the unease Mercury felt at that sort of normalcy. Not since living with his father had he had anything of the sort, and even then it couldn’t quite be considered normal by most standards. He released a slow breath through his nose, a subconscious attempt at relieving stress, and gave a curt nod.

“I got a little money, so we’re not broke. It’s not…”

Not about the quality of the area. Not about the soundness of the house, or the surroundings. It’s about safety, and the nails on a chalkboard feeling underneath his skin.

“You wanna shower first?”

“...No one is out here. And we need to make sure that this place doesn’t have the same living situation for another night. We need to get the locks fixed, we need to be able to secure the house. That’s priority one. Once it’s ours, we can worry about everything else. Okay?” she raised her brows. “...We can do this, one step at a time.”

“Good.” She chimes, all warmth gone from her gaze in an instant. “You are dismissed.” Her eyes venture to her Captain and she can tell he knew her all enough to know what to expect. “Give him the rest of the day Nathaniel. I want him fresh tomorrow.” With a simple nod, the Princess returns to her seat. Sliding parchment between her fingers and picking up her pen, returned to work before they could make an exit.

Riam is basically shivering when he leaves her chambers. He’s never had someone be able to point him out and then put him to work so quickly and easily. 

He kind of liked the feeling.

Riam arrived at the training room the following morning, before dawn was up--with a book, no less. It wasn’t exactly a real page-turner, but it was a book on the nature of swordfighting and what it meant to be a retainer. He had studied this stuff for years, of course--but a brush-up never hurt.

“Yes.” She agrees simply, looping her arm through his. “We should take the final hour of the night off.” Glynda suggests, speaking quietly into his ear. As they approach the door she leans off his shoulder, looking back toward her desk and making a mental list of the work she would start first upon her return in the morning.

For now, the professor just wanted to change into something soft and light. Honey lemon tea would be lovely, enjoyed in his company even more so.

“Agreed,” he breathes, leaning on her gently and letting her lean on him--eyes sliding carefully shut while he pressed his lips to her head. “...I’m constantly reminded of how completely drop-dead gorgeous you are. It’s wonderful...”

Ruby slips a small valentines card into Yang’s hands, winking with a face. Taped shut with a heart sticker, the inside reads “you set my heart on fire” with a small chocolate stuck to the inside. “I’ve been really busy! But here’s yours, big sis. Don’t think I forgot!”

Yang waited to open the card--for a few days, at least. But when she did--well, she couldn’t help the soft smile that came to her face. 

“...Thanks, Ruby...” The blonde mutters, holding the card close to her chest. She needed these reminders now and again.

What would Yang do for Blake on Valentine's Day? Or on any other day?

“For Valentine’s day...I dunno, probably something related to cats because I’m dumb like that.” Endless snickering followed in her voice. “...In all seriousness, chocolates, a cute romantic dinner...that sorta thing. How’s that sound to you, blakey?”

A thick postage envelope rests on the center of Ozpins desk, looked to be hardly big enough to contain whatever was held inside. Photos, each large and printed on glossy paper fill the package. Scenery, beautiful sunsets and settings, even cityscapes are pictured here, places from all across Remnant. One in particular shows a beautiful pool with an island hosting one tree with red leaves in its center. A note slips out: “Put that camera to good use I think. -L”

Riam smiles throughout most of the package, looking at each of the photos in reverence, before--

Eyes widen, and he has to sit down. How did she get a photo of it? How did she--how--

It takes everything the former god of light has to keep him from panicking. 

SMS--Birdy: How did...how did you find it? How did you even manage to get there without getting lost???

Yang was right, the last thing they needed was someone poking around the house while they were gone. One only needed to see the chaos in the living room to know something nefarious had happened here. Then again, the molding dishes in the sink and the detritus littering essentially the entire house lent itself well to excuses. He’d have to think of something good to tell anyone who asked where the old drunk had gone. For now he nodded, momentarily muted by a mouthful of food.

“It’s gonna be a long one. The house needs a lot of work.”

Thoughtfully Mercury set his fork down. “Is this what you wanna do? Put roots down? We could keep moving.”

"Well...unless you got some money I don't know about and a way for us to steal our way into a nicer community area without gettin' killed..." She trails off, raising a tired brow at Mercury and shrugging, "...it'll work if we make it. I promise."

Yang almost reached out and gently touched his hand. Almost, but she knew it'd come across as too much too quickly, and she couldn't afford that.

Nickname territory already. Mercury didn’t mind it, but it stuck out to him in combination with all of the other strangeness of the last twenty four hours. Things just felt so unfamiliar, possessing the glaring brightness and sharp edges of an alien routine. The only way to rectify it was to push onward until those edges smoothed out into something more recognizable.

“People out here gotta fill their cupboards somehow and you can’t grow toilet paper. You wanna head out and look after breakfast? We could talk to a neighbor and just say we’re lost in the area and looking for the closest city.”

Yeah, it was a shame to let people see their faces, but it seemed like the best course of action.

Yang laughed at that a little--jokes got her rather easily, it was one of her few weaknesses. 

“Yeah,” she nods, “I’ll take bumblebee out and we can drive out? Provided, yknow, there are functioning locks on the doors.” The blonde had been quietly thinking about that for a few minutes now; were there locks on the entrances? If not, they needed to do that, too.

“...We should make a list.”

Has Yang ever seen the auras of 2 people clashing, while visible, and actually affecting the environment? owo I hope this question ain't weird to ask.

“Uhhhh...maybe once for the two people clashing thing? But affecting the environment? I mean...I catch fire, but that’s...’bout it.”

“I’ve heard~ But, it’s only whenever I’m with someone I love and hold dear~” Ryuko’s purr only deepened as she was nuzzled by Yang, even deeper than Lily’s as her cyan eyes closed.

Yang kissed her forehead, whispering softly, “If I get lucky, one of these days, you’ll marry me~”

“Oh, um- D-Do you really think they’d wanna see me? I’m just your little sister.” She giggles, waving it off a little. “Plus, I especially don’t think Blake would want to see me.”  Ruby picked up Crescent Rose from the floor and hooked it onto her belt after making sure it was loaded. With a soft sigh, she leaned in to hug Yang again, lifting herself as high as possible on the tips of her legs. “I missed you a lot, Sis.” She smiled, ruffling the top of Yang’s hair. “Okay, but you gotta promise me something!” Ruby huffed and pointed a finger at her sister. “You don’t introduce me as your little sister.” 

“Pfff,” she giggles, “of course they’d wanna see you, Rubes! They’ve only talked about you and team RWBY nonstop.” she beams, wrapping her arms around her baby sister and lifting her up! Though the blonde did squeak as her hair was ruffled--Ruby was still the only one allowed to do that.

“You got it, team leader,” she beams--her voice and tone were both completely earnest.

As Yang began her explanation Mercury filled glasses of tap water for the both of them and set their places at the table. Really, it didn’t consist of much more than chipped plates and battered forks, but the domesticity of it still felt alien to him. Nevertheless he listened, attempting to create a mental map with her description of the system. Later he’d have to get her to walk him through it physically, but for now he was content to hear it and nibble on the attempt at breakfast he’d made.

“Sounds like we’re all set,” he ventured when she finished. “We’ll worry about the logistics of it soon. But I was thinking, we need scrolls. I’m not sorry I had us ditch ours, but if we’re going to get in touch with distributors we need a means of communication. Not only that, but eggs, beer, and something with fur is all that’s in the fridge. We need to stock up on things.”

Somehow, Mercury didn’t imagine striking out on their own to wreck havoc and rebel to be so mundane, and yet here they were.

She listens as well, gaze focused as he speaks and she gives a soft nod. 

“Good idea, Merc; I’m not sorry either, but you’re right. We ought to head into town soon--if...you know, there is town nearby. There’s gotta be, right?”

Somehow, Yang hadn’t expected Mercury to be the logistics guy--but here they were, and Merc turned out to be better at that than Yang was. She took another bite of food, “Mm--once we have scrolls, we’ll be able to look up how to properly harvest goldclove, cuz I’m pretty sure neither of us know how to do that.”

Reflexively Mercury shot a glance over his shoulder as Yang entered. Several eggs and plenty of hash browns sat still hot on a freshly washed plate rescued from the full sink. It would take ages to wash the dishes and throw away all of the rotten food; first order of business after breakfast, he thought. Nerves thrummed continuously under the surface as he tried not to look at the mess. His growling stomach needed to come first.

“Sink water or alcohol is your only choice to drink,” he relayed, “but soup’s on. I made plenty, should be enough.”

As he spoke he ferried the plates to the neglected kitchen table. “What did you find?”

“Eugh--I’ll take the water.” she nods, “Good on the soup and the rest of the food--and as for me...” she sat down, beginning to explain the strange setup that was the irrigation pipes.

There were six ‘zones,’ each one controlling a massive grid of sprinklers that went off every morning. thankfully, the sprinklers were set to automatically clean themselves every morning, otherwise Yang’s life would be literal hell on remnant. the blonde let out a deep breath as she laid it all out, explaining--as in-depth as she could get without confusing herself--how it all worked. By the end, she was curious how she even remembered it all.
