#PennyForMarcellesThoughts The thought behind the creation of this flag is as interesting and thought provoking as our rallies, protests, and conversations regarding the intersectionality of race, gender identity/expression and sexual orientation/preference. While it does prove a point, I have to say we run into an issue, while minor, the term "POC" and having the flag encompass ALL communities is not clearly stated/defined. As a POC, gender fluid gay individual, I find myself torn. Torn, as I fully am committed to my communities and to the people I surround myself with, but also as an advocate, finding ways to lesson the pushback we get from opposing views. My final thoughts are simple. Every pair of shoes tells a story... especially for dancers. These are my very first pair of heeled tap shoes, courtesy of T.O.Dey Custom Made Shoes. Gino, the head designer, and I talked about creating these shoes for months, as I was on the fence about purchasing shoes like these. You see, I was dealing with an identity crisis and didn't know how often I would potentially be using these pieces of art. As a gender non-conforming actor and dancer, we find ourselves put into boxes inside auditions and casting calls, as they are mainly separated by gender. When you feel confident enough to break these rules, your constantly faced with criticism from the other actors within the space and/or the creative team, as you clearly don't fit the mold. However, upon making the impulsive decision to purchase these shoes, I found myself proud of who I was becoming, and it's a fitting reminder to who've I've become today. I ended up taking a drop-in tap class at @bdcnyc and another student approached me during our water break, congratulating me on wearing heeled shoes, and calling me the most beautiful and bravest human they've ever met; From that moment, I made a decision that any and all dance shoes I wear, will be heeled.
