Progress since the last post includes purchase and installation of a secondhand stater motor, installing a NOS hand accelerator cable and re-tightening of the exhaust union with the manifold to remedy the exhaust leak. Also purchased a couple more spanners for the built up tool roll.

So last weekend started the car and drove it out of the shed onto the driveway. First time driven under its own power in 51 years. Was able to confirm the clutch and brakes work as they should. However, it revealed an exhaust leak where the two branch exhaust meets the manifold. Neither of the old Fispa fuel pumps that I have don’t seem to be working. I considered rebuilding them with a new kit but opted instead for a new generic pump. And it works a treat. The car now starts albeit the starter motor is not consistently engaging. Will think about a remedy for that.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Project Review Part (45)

New water pump kit arrived but the impeller was not correctly pressed onto the shaft. Contacted Classic Alfa in the U.K. and they graciously offered to forward another. So now the pump is rebuilt with a new impeller, front and rear bearing and seal. Something of a job to press the bearings into the aluminium housing with the correct spacing but now installed with a new gasket and no leaks.

Ignition checked followed by a brief start up for proof of life. Unfortunately with the free version of wordpress that I use I am unable to upload video. However, the engine runs cleanly. What the exercise revealed is a leaking water pump and fuel pump does not seem to be pumping. Neither are surprising given the engine has been sitting for a few years. Another job completed today. Last week decided to replace the oil seal on the pinion on front off the differential. However, the pinion nut is castellated and requires a special socket to remove. Which I did not possess. After checking on the online forums I decided on sacrificing a 27mm socket by cutting out the required sections with a cutting disc and then finishing by hand file. Fitted a period fuel filter to the engine bay. Not original to the car but according to the forums some Normales were fitted with the Fispa type fuel filter that was more commonly fitted to the Veloce models. In any event a fuel filter seems like a good idea.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Project Review Part (34)

All things considered I’ve managed to mostly preserve the interior of the Sprint. To date original seat belts, all gauges, carpets, roof lining, seat covers, door cards and read of the cabin trim including padded rear bench cushions. I did have to recover the dashboard top.
