To say I love learning is a huge understatement. I like to push myself to learn new skills. One thing I really love is fashion art, though I was previously a little afraid of it because I tend to ‘color inside the lines’. For me that means accurate to scale finished type images. Which is fine, but learning to step outside my comfort zone with art has opened up so many new possibilities and an exciting creative spark.
What does this mean for you? Well, a collection of images even the ‘oopsies!’ I have worked on. Like this one. My first attempt on 5×7 60# mixed media paper by #Canson. I lopped off her feet!
Learning to use exaggerated scale and shapes is very new to me. Oh, where have I been learning all this? I am glad you asked! I have been learning this style from Dallas Shaw who has a class on Skillshare. She does this for a living and is really good.
I want to develop my own style but learning the how and technical stuff first is very important. Once I am comfortable with that, I can intertwine my personality into them. I have noticed so far, that I tend to add more detail into the faces and hair. Not that that is bad, but I need to ‘unlearn’ the detailing I was taught at a much younger age so I can really open up as an artist. The more I practice, the more I think I can let go. Also, watercolor has never been my strong suit, so this is incorporating much of that as well.
First finished fashion art piece
My second attempt, actually led to the addition of color *gasp*! It was a made up outfit, I was too nervous to try and work from a picture yet. But I feel good about just getting it finished. Something about that as an accomplishment made the next one go easier. That one is on the same mixed media #Canson paper, but removed from the spiral journal and taped to a clip board to keep it from warping as I painted. An unfinished version is in the image gallery below.
Post card sized #fashionart
For my next finished practice one, I tried out some Fabriano Postcard cold press #140 watercolor paper block 3×5 3/4 for my next sketch. I liked the idea of smaller art, but it was slightly difficult to work with her face. This is also a made up outfit. The finished version of this one is in picture the gallery below, please have a look!
As of this post, I am currently working on a larger scale fashion art piece from an image of a friend who has a cute Facebook page: ‘MarieEsbella – Fashion on a Budget’. This paper is cold press 9×12 watercolor paper #140 by Bee Paper Company. I have been working in stages with this one as opposed to all at one time. This is the first image from before fixing the pencil part bad adding some of the color. I have several ‘stages’ of this fashion artwork in the gallery below. I can see I need to work on my hands in practice some more, but so far, am pleased with the progress.
I hope you enjoyed this post, and it would be awesome if you shared this with some friends! :)
