This morning I woke up in a tree. A tree.
Alright, let me explain. I spent yesterday evening searching for Mom, Dad and Rosa. I traveled a bit in the surrounding woods for them, but there really seemed to be no sign of anyone...or anything.
I kept walking, in god knows what direction since I don't have a compass or anything on me, and everything was normal. A creek here, a deer there, nothing.
Until I walked a bit further. Just a bit. Probably about 20 yards. That's when I saw them- a hoard of the monsters. There was probably 15 or so, 30 feet away. The zombies were just standing there, swaying back and forth slightly, with that vacant look in their eyes.
Until I stepped on a branched as I was slowly trying to get away.
"POP!" The branched snapped in two.
And that was it. I knew it was over. All at once, they slowly turned their head toward me and started walking in my direction.
I probably could have fought them. And maybe... maybe gotten out alive.
But I had to think quick. So I turned around to the closest tree, one with low hanging limbs, and started climbing. I climbed up, as fast as I could, and just as I had made it past their grasps, the monsters were surrounding the trunk, their filthy, rotting hands grasping in my direction.
But they couldn't climb. Thank fucking god.
So I was in a tree. And I stayed there. I stayed there, and they stayed at the base, and it started to get dark, but I still stayed, sitting in a nice crook of a branch. Safe.
Just as I was nodding off from exhaustion, a loud noise filled the forest. It was a gunshot, no doubt. From who, I don't know. But I didn't mind at all, since it seemed to catch the zombie's attention, and they slowly left the base of my tree.
But there was no way in hell I was leaving. I probably got a few hours of sleep that night, 10-20 minutes at a time. But it was enough.
Eventually, the sun rose, waking me up with it. It was a magnificent sight, from atop the tree- really beautiful. Magnificent, but ironic in this disaster of a world.
As I awoke, The sun filled my vision, and a muffled... scream filled the surrounding area.
It sounded like a man, no doubt. Young. Scared. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't just stay up in that tree I'd feel too guilty... So I looked around to make sure there weren't any zombies, and climbed down. I followed in the direction of the screams, jogging slowly with my katana out and ready.
Eventually I could make out the figure. Well. Figures. There was a young guy, my age... being approached by 3 zombies.
I ran as fast as I could toward him, who was just about to become zombo dinner, and with a swift swing, took off the head of one of the zombies from behind. The sandy blonde boy looked at me, jaw dropped open, and (clearly not paying attention to the other two flesh eaters who were about to go in for the kill), I pushed him aside with my shoulder and he fell smack on his ass onto the ground.
Now that I had him out of the way, I could focus on the real problem.
The two zombies went after me now, and they tried to take ahold of me with their rotting hands. I kicked one smack in the chest, and it went flying back, and I took the quick opportunity to stab the other in the head with my katana. That zombie fell down, and I removed the sword and immediately went after the third and last zombie. Another swooping movement, and the head went rolling away, into a pile of nearby leaves.
I looked down at the guy, who looked like he was about to cry right then and there on the ground, and I held out a hand. He took hold of it, and I helped him get to his feet.
He brushed off the dirt on his pants. I put my bloody katana back in its sheath.
Lanky and a bit shorter than me and staring at the ground, the guy was obviously embarrassed.
"Hey, thanks man, uh I really owe you," he had said.
I had told him not to sweat it, and he introduced himself as Jean. Jean Kirshtine? Kierstein? Something french.
That was a few hours ago. We've stopped now, by a small creek. Jean keeps mentioning something about a voice... about a fort. I dunno, I think he's just a little shaken up from earlier today.
He seems okay, he's my age... and he has a good amount of ammo on him.
But nowadays, it's hard to trust anyone. But for some gut reason, I feel like he's okay.
I have no one else, so I might as well stick with him for now.
