“ i – i didn’t mean to, i swear! i was just – bored. ” arella winced at her pathetic lie ( honestly, she should’ve been more PREPARED ), keeping her eyes looking towards the ground. she nibbled at the corner of her mouth, avoiding eye contact. “ it won’t happen again, promise. can i just – go back? ” the woman’d probably bring her, which was annoying, she’d rather sneak off again.

“ well your boredom is gonna have you on the receiving end of an infected bite if you’re not careful. and it’s not my fault if you die on one of your little adventures because you didn’t care to notify anyone. ” it may have seemed like she was mad but in actuality, she was just annoyed. she didn’t want to have to deal with some kids’ stupidity. “ sure, just go. don’t sneak off again. ”

         ‘ not really! but, the thought did occur to me. if it’s meant to be, it’ll happen –– & all that other bullshit, right? ’ the female shrugged, taking yet another sip of burning liquid. ‘ now where’s the fun in that? ’

“i guess. stuff must’ve gotten to some sorta bad place for you to not care about dying, huh?” marceline leaned against the gates, tightening her grip on her arms. “ there is no fun. that’s the point. ”

      ‘ you’re new? ’ the brunette questioned, bright hues going over the blonde’s features once more. ‘ how new? ’

“i’m not new. --- i’ve been apart of this camp for eight years.” she swiped a stray hair behind her ear. “i just like to keep to myself.”

archer had a hard time sleeping. it was not an uncommon thing for her, she didn’t get as much sleep as someone should get.  to distract herself, or maybe tire herself out enough to the point where she’d fall asleep, she decided it was a good idea to take a walk. hearing someone speak she rose her hands, “ it’s just me, archer. “

“and that’s supposed to provide me with an answer, how?” it was probably rude but marceline didn’t try to get to know anyone in the camp. so someone just shouting out their name didn’t provide much distinction. she kept her gun pointed at the person, unwavering.

“You’re nightly replacement.”  He replied, showing his own gun with a roll of the eyes.

“Well announce yourself next time.” She lowered her gun slowly after seeing the person in front of her.

it was peaceful on nights like these; bitterly cold, but peaceful. her chapped lips curved into a smirk as she threw another rock at the bullseye she’d made on the tree. then she heard the cocking of a gun and a voice rung out from the darkness. arella’s eyes darted over to where the distinct voice broke the silence of the night. shit, she didn’t think she was going to get caught. with wide, innocent eyes, arella licked her lips and walked towards the source of the voice.

“ i’m —- sorry, you frightened me. ”

marceline sighed in return. lowering her gun immediately, she swallowed. it was just some kid. why she decided to come out on a night like this, she’d never know. “ receiving a bullet to the brain would be much more frightening. which could've easily happened to you. what are you doing out so late ? and why are you outside of the border ? i could’ve shot you, thinking you were some type of infected !! ”

         ‘ –– –– well, i am feeling a bit down. & suicide’s way too depressing, right? i mean, really! so, –– wait, is it suicide if you try & get yourself killed? you know, this is way too confusing. ’ the brunette finished, bringing the bottle to her lips. although, odette paused before she let the liquid meet her tongue –– instead extending the glass contained towards the blonde. ‘ want some? ’

“ so your plan was to then go outside the border and try to get yourself killed ? sounds more like idiocy than anything else. ” the blonde placed her gun back into its holster before crossing her arms across her chest. “ not at all. see, i have a job which requires me to keep the border safe and that doesn’t seem quite possible if i can’t think straight. so why don’t you go inside so i can do just that ? ”

         ‘ –– –– not anymore! not as much… ’ sammy continued, a slight shrug following his words. STRANGER DANGER!! bright hues studying the girl’s features, & the male found his mind cluttered once more. ‘ do i know you? sometimes, –– sometimes i forget. people, & faces. ’

“ i can’t really answer that question since i’m not inside your head,” sure wouldn’t like to. “and i’m sure you can’t either with you’re current psychological state. ---- the only thing i know is that before today, i never even knew you existed. much like the rest of this camp. ”

         the past week had made the female irrational; trading rations for moonshine more often than she set a foot in the town cafeteria. and tonight had been no different. in an escape of her roommate’s constant judgement, odette found herself wandering the perimeter –– not a weapon on her to protect the brunette from a possible threat. ‘ –– –– you know, if you shoot me –– i’ll be kinda pissed. ’ the girl replied, bottle of clear liquid in hand.

marceline let out a breath of annoyance and lowered her gun. tonight was just supposed to be her and her thoughts all alone, much to her dismay. now she had to put up with some drunken girl instead. obvious from the unknown liquid in her hand. tonight was definitely not looking up. “ --- --- what’re you doing outside of the border this late at night ? you didn’t even have the basic instinct to bring a weapon,” she waved her hand in the direction of the girl, “ are you trying to get yourself killed ? if my judgement was better, i probably would’ve been the one to do it. ”

‘ —- just maybe a little more leniency on the whole ‘the world sucks’ thing. ‘

“ ---- well it does. nothing’ll make me more happy than for it to just be over with. ”

         ‘ –– –– just… that i’m, –– uh, you know, stupid. && should kill myself. ’ sammy replied with a slight shrug, not quite sure why he’d decided to share with the blonde to begin with. she already knows !! you know she can hear us, sam… ’ –– –– a little bit of both, i guess ! ’

“ ----- that’s.... um, interesting --- i guess. uh, how long has this been going on ? it starting within the last ten years seems to be shitty timing, if so. ” marceline wiped her hands against her pants. him telling this to her was quite the surprise. she didn’t even know he existed before this interaction. “ i guess the fitting question here would be: have you ever done what he tells you to do ? ” she replied in what she guess resembled a helpful manor.

despite all the things marceline hated about being in a group with people who weren’t her brother, she couldn’t deny that it was in her best interest to be surrounded by supplies and people who knew at least something about them. this and a series of other thoughts went through her mind as she stood in front of the gate on night duty. ultimately leaving her by herself to watch the border. hearing a sudden noise she held up her gun in the direction of commotion. “ who’s there ? ”
