Amazing how swiftly the body decides it cannot keep up with the kind of bullshit treatment you inflicted on it in the past.
No idea what I was thinking about anymore after going through that over five hour flight delay and having to somehow drive myself back home after landing at a gods awful hour.
Nonstop hellfire thoughts still aka unending obsessive over living with the consequences of your past shit decisions, but also the unshakable truth that no matter how shitty and horrible things are right now, if you fight and claw for it a better tomorrow could always come.
Shaking with not sleeping in thirty hours like a dumbass as I finally get to kill Dabi in fire almost a dozen times. UGH this is seriously taking a decade at this rate.
Me: yeah early Batman digital systems for his personal stuff was probably terminal heavy with C or Java or a disgusting spaghetti mess of Perl-
Me: wait a fucking moment
Me: this freak might have set up an entirely unique language instead. you were already having him going down to the machine level
I don’t care that it’s been over half a decade. I still dream of some way to contrive an excuse to introduce electromagnetism to Toph so she can have fun harassing firebenders.
Navi there’s a recent 99 Percent Invisible episode where they talk about the historical incompatibility of different types of screws and how it fucked everything up for people until they standardized it. It’s really good. i can’t think of an application for it any of your current WIPs but like, the spirit of the problem… it seems like something you would put in one of your fics
Oh man, I’ve loved that podcast and Roman’s stuff since my brother introduced it to me back when we were in college, roundabouts. The current special series is utterly delightful.
Honestly, I do still think on a bizarre near weekly basis about how crazed I want to be about Fire Nation smelting and metalworking and coaling and the sheer baffling, horrible screaming of everything that went into and came out of the attack on the North Pole. Just on a sheer resource allocation and cost from spirits know how many years of design and production and training and minutiae that got wiped out in a single night. In any version of events that had Zhao surviving that utter disaster, he would have been swiftly executed. Unfortunately, it makes nearly no sense to fit it in any of my current narratives, beyond overall larger picture devastation to morale and resources. Which Aang and crew bulldoze with further actions swiftly enough. Maybe Sokka would care about the engineering or Toph might sense it, but it’s such a distraction to bring up.
Meanwhile in Raccoon Empire, I have been delighted digging up my random notes and ideas from my past brief fits in Voltron thinking about the hell of standardizing procedures and measurements across a galaxy or more of different cultures. Not enough people inflict hilariously paranoid and onerous quarantine procedures for returning from space and coming into contact with who knows what kind of horrifying disease or invasive species. Any kinds of sharing tech across aliens plus the existence of magic has me cackling with glee.
bobst my beloved I miss you so much
It’s also so funny seeing Gotham compared to basically Union Square and south of Manhattan, with the context of this comparison making far more sense decades ago.
Like yeah, Bowery used to be super alarming. But by the time I briefly lived in that area, SoHo and Greenwich Village were some of the most expensive, tech bro, bougie places around. Don’t even get me started on West Village. Lower Manhattan was so gentrified and even Chinatown was on its way out.
Anyways. Sole point of all of this is that I’m going to make bitching over the bridges even more prominent because apparently not enough authors have experienced taking over an hour to move past one block on the way to Lincoln Tunnel in an attempt to get off the island. Legitimately so many conversations with friends and roommates back then about Manhattan and Long Island being death traps impossible to evacuate if something happens.
“Gotham has a population of 9 million —”
You can’t fucking do this to me, I refuse to accept that especially in a version of the setting where NY also exists at the same time, what the fuck do you mean Gotham would be the most populated city in the US, I won’t take this—
Really hoping that I’m able to fully exorcise my beef with soulmates with the hellfire series because if I’m still carrying my gripes and worldbuilding questions into DC too, we’re in for a miserable time.
In the wide, wide internet, at least one of you has got to have written something about ED in an omegaverse AU…
One thing the fanfic idea of tiny Tim running around his home alone for ages never seems to mention is that uhhhhh. small children I know and remember. do NOT tend to remember routine hygiene needs like regular showers.
Is this kid showering. I’m serious, when in this timeline your plot has constructed does this kid get his haircuts.
Still chipping away at the tiny stalker Tim shenanigans and really need to add a counter for how many footnotes go “this is fraud. this is also fraud. the child doesn’t realize it, but this activity also breaks these following laws.”
Trying to figure out if I’m just being a grouchy older person or if there is genuinely a bafflingly small percentage of fics in this fandom that are good old case fics.
Are people using a different tag these days? Is this just a different fandom’s conventions that’s hiding content from my search results? I just want more fic that actually engages with antagonists through an interesting action plot? Why is there so much whump???
There is a criminal lack in fic of mentioning any strategic or logistical issues about moving between islands over waterways for the purpose of running around as a pack of vigilantes hunting down criminals with gimmicks. How are we not talking about choke points galore.
Also have none of y’all ever wandered around a riverside in the middle of the night feeling like you’re losing your mind and getting your ears ripped off by the cold of the wind that seems to never stop blowing in winter. No one else ever wander around blocks of silent but fully lit warehouses at midnight on the way to and from said riverside?
No one? Guys?
Underutilized element in fic: random civilians treating fire escapes and flat rooftops as free extra balcony space.
I’m not saying this is common or a good idea given safety concerns. But my neighbors a couple of floors above me while I still lived in Manhattan had an alarmingly enthusiastic pot of thyme growing in the corner of their section of the fire escape. And wandering around on the roofs of the apartment block (all the buildings were basically only separated by drywall in the units), I found all kinds of table and chair set ups.
It’s free real estate.
Bizarre experience of starting to hammer out outlines and realizing that in all the fics I recall that feature the idea of Haly’s Circus also spending time outside the US never address the question of if Dick is a US citizen or not.
This is not important at all for most people, I get it. Still.
