I think I did it. I completed all the illustrations for my first magical picture book. It was an incredible, sometimes bumpy, journey. Days 3 to 6 of the #sketchbookhabit. When trying to make a quick sketch of my husband while he was reading the newspaper, I felt so frustrated. Things were not going the way I wanted. I failed to nail his essence. But, It is all part of the learning process. There are good days, not-so-good days, bad days and good days again. Today was a good day. I am slowly making progress with the illustrations of my picture book. Yes, you read that correct: my picture book. After illustrating more than 25 books in the last 13 years, my publisher and I thought it was time to write and illustrate my own. I am so grateful my publisher believes in this book project standing so close to me. Draakje Donatius is verliefd is af. Het is alweer het 5e boek in de reeks. En, zal ik wat verklappen: ik vind het ‘t mooiste en beste boek tot nu toe in de Draakje Donatius en Elfje Floriene reeks. Een echte aanrader voor iedereen die van schilderen houdt. Afgelopen zaterdag heb ik, samen met mijn jongste dochter, de workshop grote portretten schilderen bij René de Vries gevolgd. Tijdens de workshop bij @vanbeekartsupplies in Eindhoven, leerden we vrijer omgaan met het schilderen van portretten. Voor mij weer eens heel goed om te proeven van experimenteren met verschillende media en op groter formaat werken. Ik heb genoten van de hele dag. Tegenwoordig neem ik niet meer alle opdrachten klakkeloos aan. Spreekt het project me niet aan, of heb ik geen klik met de opdrachtgever, dan zeg ik gewoon “Nee”. Dat is niet alleen een verademing, maar creëert ook ruimte en rust waardoor ik me beter kan focussen op de opdrachten die me wel aanspreken. Just Act van Kim Hendriks-Merk en Priscilla Theunissen is zo’n opdracht die me aanspreekt en ook raakt. Blij en dankbaar dat ik met mijn illustraties een bijdrage heb mogen leveren aan dit bijzondere en waardevolle project. “Just Act" is een training waarin jongeren op een interactieve en sportieve wijze leren omgaan met de spreekwoordelijke “beren op de weg”. Een initiatief dat ik toejuich, want het helpt jongeren om negatieve gedachtes, gevoelens en gedragspatronen te doorbreken. Dolgelukkig met de auteursexemplaren van “Goldie”. En… met Sam, die alle foto’s heeft genomen.
