something about Toy Story toys is so strange to me. versions of animated characters based on real world toys, turned back into toys that are slightly different than the actual toys. slinky dog with a rubber spiral instead of a classic metal slinky. the porcelain bo peep and cloth woody turned into jointed plastic action figures. when toy story 4 came out and i saw a $30 talking action figure of forky, a character made out of a spork and a pipe cleaner, i stood in the walmart toy aisle staring at it like cameron from ferris bueller's day off staring at that painting in the art museum
how it all feels lately
one of my favorite things in dunmeshi is how chilchuck turns out to be the guy in the party with the least to hide despite how much he goes out of his way to act all secretive. like the more we learn about everyone else it seems like they’ve all got like trauma or crimes or even just oddities that they don’t share explicitly not bc they’re hiding anything, but just because it’s never come up, or it’s too much of a hassle to explain, or it just didn’t occur to them. meanwhile, Normal Man Chilchuck is finding new gray hairs every morning because his friends want to know how old he is and his darkest secret is that his wife left him for being… too secretive. like up against a monster-phile, a dark mage, a circus attraction and Schrödinger’s cannibal, him making such a big deal out of having three adult kids is kinda epic
i would actually like to argue that that makes it even funnier because chilchuck actually recounts this tale with very little hesitation. he’s extremely open about his traumatic half foot experiences because they’re the reason for his dedicated work/life balance. the oppression he experiences is part of his everyday life within the workplace, so naturally he talks about it within the workplace.
by comparison, the others are all entrenched in some kind of drama deeply related to their roles to an extent that it’s like. yeah it makes sense that this isn’t a typical conversation topic, but they’re not ever the ones shouting about respecting professional boundaries, and also their issues are more related to their professional lives than chilchuck’s. laios is a team leader who dislikes humans because of how they historically have treated him and his sister. marcille is here to study dark magic because she’s consumed by her fear of outliving everyone she loves. senshi and starvation. izutsumi and the inherent trauma of living in a body that has been permanently changed against your will.
chilchuck is the most well-adjusted guy in the group. he’s on salary. he formed a union. he’s working on his family (more or less). he likes to drink as a hobby rather than to cope. he pursues healthy, constructive outlets for his frustrations with the world and doesn’t hesitate to advocate for himself. my point isn’t that chilchuck doesn’t have trauma, it’s that the trauma he does have is stuff he’s processed and dealt with, so that by the time the story starts he’s at a point in his life where his most closely guarded secret is that he has a family.
and the way he guards that secret so obsessively is HILARIOUS by comparison.
I think we can all agree that one of todays most pressing issues is coming up with a gender neutral inclusive variant of 'aunt/uncle' and 'nephew/niece' that doesn't sound fucking awful

You may notice that stoning someone is considered violent, but getting stoned is generally a good time. Similarly, getting your shit rocked is usually bad, but rocking someone’s world is almost always positive. This is because we rocks are very nuanced and complex
Working an office job will truly make you have the wildest enemies, bc why is my nemesis rn a woman I’ve never met and who exclusively haunts me by sending diabolical emails, and also a specific guy who left my company before I even worked here and made the system so fuckass that it ruined procedures for like a year
Yesterday my nemesis (woman I’ve never met and whose face I’ve never seen) sent my office an email so rude, basically saying we had fucked up every project she ever ordered from us, one of the worst emails I’ve ever read in my life.
And it pissed me off so badly that I spent the ENTIRE WORK DAY today compiling evidence from every project my team has ever done for her, pulling past emails she’d sent us, putting together an entire case proving that she had been the problem all along. That she got projects mixed up, that she’d made requests that were nonsensical, literally everything you could possibly imagine. Screenshots of emails, reports we’d submitted, EVERYTHING.
This woman in particular has been terrorizing my team for years, her name is almost a slur in my office, I had simply had ENOUGH of her.
I put all of this evidence together and sent it to all of my bosses at 4:30pm. Then I took a long break to eat a sweet treat and drink some tea.
After my break, my bosses all called in an emergency meeting with me and they said they read my report and fucking loved it. And I sat on a teams call with my boss’ boss as she wrote my nemesis the scathing email I had always fantasized about sending, using the evidence I’d compiled, and hit send.
It was the most satisfying workday I’ve had since I got hired.
