My photograph for my Fetac level 4 Digital media. tech. and visual Arts. i was inspired by the photography of Bill Brandt where he used parts of the body to assimulate into a landscape. the photograph was taken in colour and and a self-timer on camera. it was cropped and digititally edited.The hand was to represent another textural stone in a wall. the resulting composition a contrast in ‘natural’ textures.
Glentanassig Woods - Upper Lakes. It was hard to believe that after driving through thick fog at sea level we emerged into what seemed like heaven. when we went back home it was back into the mists.

I was fortunate to be in Valencia, Spain in January when Pepe Valavera was exhibiting. The exhibition was in a priavate gallery and four large walls were covered with a collection of his paintings.his paintings. In a previous exhibition his paintings were inspired by his own photography. In this exhibition he based his work on other people's images. he started a daily and systematic compilation of images published in hundreds of blogs. The repitition of themes an icons, the bias to specific types of imagery. be it through attraction or revulsion and often both drove him to consider this alien material in the same way as he had treated his own photography in his last exhibition.
I particularly like the way exhibited his work, the balance of colour and size of individual pieces that enabled the whole collection to work as a single piece of work. The arrangement a work of art in it's self.
i could see myself using a similiar way of displaying my photographs.

Skellig Art Fair
The next exhibition on our agenda was the Skellig Hotel Christmas Craft Fair, a promotional fair for locally produced products.
This turned out to be a very educational exhibition in that it showed us what we needed to consider for future exhibitions.
I was a bit disappointed in the space we were allocated in the Skellig. Besides being surrounded by other photographers, (in fairness to the Skellig they did move some of these to other areas,) our table ran alongside the windows overlooking the harbour which was lovely on the day, but because we had no display units, and no wall behind us, it meant we had no place to hang our photos so we had to leave most of our photos in boxes on the table. We did enjoy the day though, meeting and talking to other people who also had stands and consider this all part of the learning process.
What we need to consider for future Exhibitions
Poster —— Who we are.
Display units for photos, or make sure there is a wall or place to hang photos for display.
Local area photos. Viewers at fair spent more time looking at photos of local areas ie. places they themselves recognized.
Have one or two photographs in frames, which add a bit of professionalism to exhibition.

Christmas Fair Skellig Hotel 2014
Just before Christmas 2014 Féasta exhibited in at the Christmas craft fair in the Skellig Hotel. I was unable to attend as I was away for Christmas. Several members of the group manned the stand and sold their photographs and learned a lot from the experience.
1) To find out what stand is allocated to you if possible and therefore if you have a wall to display photographs.
2) Have a few photographs framed to show customers the photograph at it's best.
3) if having regular exhibitions to invest in a stand.
Well done to those exhibited and I am re-blogging their photos of the event.

Listowel Food Festival
Listowel Food Festival took part in late Nov 2014 and unfortunately I was unable to take part. However several members of the group took up our posters for the event. That is of course simplifying maters. They managed at short notice to get us in the brochure, to source and secure an empty venue that stunningly showed our photographs.
They went up armed with cleaning and hanging accessories and had a rota of people staying with the exhibition.
They did a fantastic job and I compliment them on the result. There was a lot of interest in the work and contacts made.
I think this worked well as a whole exhibition compared to the Dingle Food Festival where we were spread throughout the town.
Féasta: Féile Bia/ Listowel Food Festival exhibition 20th -23rd Nov 2014
So what did I learn from exhibiting at the Dingle Food Festival?
1) Things can change last minute; proprietors were told that there was a prize for the best window. DId the poster fit in with their colour scheme? Helen and I made a swap to accommodate.
2) The sun! On the Saturday the sun was out and behind glass the heat is magnified. This only affected premises on one side of the road and fortunately yet sadly only destroyed one poster. A different method of hanging in these conditions would have to be thought of.
3) Was the venue going to host food or wine? Communication with these exhibitors was necessary. in both my venues there was something going on apart from a window competition.
In Curran's a fabulous fish tasting was to happen and I knew this, so my Mackerel should compliment with it perfectly. However i did not take into account that they might want to display a poster in the same window and neither did the bar staff, who were, needless to say very busy, that weekend.
On Saturday my poster was not in the window and replaced with another. Like wise at my other venue they had wine tasting and the size of my poster obscured the tasting sessions, so was put to the side. It was replaced when the event concluded at the end of each day.
Lesson: Find out if anything else is going to happen at your venue. Get in touch with that exhibitor and leave a phone number if there are problems.
At Curran's it was resolved by the end of the day; my poster just needed to be raised above theirs and they both complimented each other.
So everything that might happen in in your venue has to be well sussed before any hanging.

Exhibiting at the Dingle Food Festival
in class we had a brainstorming session to determine everything that would be needed for the event, right down to hooks and nylon line to hang or not. We had decided on what we wanted to display; so we needed to decide on sizes, prices, dates when it could be ready, could they deliver, could we afford it, would we get it on time. We had a week not a year!
Tasks were divided and decisions made that day. Killarney Printing came out the best deal on cost and time but we had to collect to have them on time.
A great Bonus came our way; we were to be sponsored by .
Most of us had visited the 'owners of our windows' and arranged when and how we would hang, which was to be the Friday prior to the weekend festival.
We splits into groups in order to help each other hang our poster as this saved a lot of running outside to see if things were level. We had great fun doing this. Some drama included; I lost my car keys carrying stuff to and fro ( found eventually), and 'Smart Alec' customers in Currans Bar where I was hanging my masterpiece, hid my poster while Helen and i were up a ladder screwing in hooks to the ceiling! We restrained ourselves!!!
I decided I was not going to waste time going into town and be disappointed again so I phoned up Kanes fish factory to see if they had my mussels. Not only did they have mussels but boxes of Mackerel. An angel was looking after me! I shot off into town and came away with both subjects. Not only did I have my fish but it was a perfect day for taking photographs and of course i had brought my camera along. As I drove along Dingle bay towards Miltown I noticed the tide was out and lots of lovely seaweed was exposed- a nice backdrop for my mackerel?
I then headed home but decided why don't i go to Dooneen Pier as was the plan, and check it out. I would stick with the plan of setting out a meal at the pier but decide on the best place to show it off.
The day was perfect, though the clouds kept getting in the way of the sun- creating varying light conditions. A Currach was conveniently tied up in the harbor, moving gently with the breeze, giving me different angles of view. I was flying.Two hours later and I'd changed the plan to 'Catch Of the Day'. i was starving by now and I still had my Mussels! Yummy!
That day was the last of the sun that week!
I had a week and I had put out the word to two fisherman that i needed a few unfilleted mackerel and I had visited Kanes fish factory to no avail. they had some beautiful salmon but they were not so photogenic. The supermarkets only had them as tiny fillets. two days before the final class I decided I needed another plan- Mussels- I could cook a delicious pot of creamy mussels in white wine, take it down to Dooneen Pier near Ballydavid, set in on a tray with glass of wine in view of the Three Sisters on the Wild Atlantic Way! Then i could eat them! Double Whammy, Yes!
Where could I get the mussels?
The Dingle Food Festival is growing bigger every year, and with a lot of push and help from our tutor Siobhan Dempsey we got into the brochure. it was a rush job because of deadlines, so we had to waste no time in deciding on a name for the group. 'Féasta'! Deadlines do come into their own when having to make decisions especially when group decisions have to be made.
A list of windows that we had permission to use throughout the town was made. In class the group viewed projected images that each exhibitor wanted to be considered and shared ideas on how they could be improved( if at all) and how they best be displayed and in what window. it was a very positive experience as as usual most people think their work is not as good as!!!!
As the October loomed, the pressure was on. With everyone having their own personal commitments lots of encouragement was needed so that no-one was having panic attacks.
I had yet to find my mackerel!!!!!!
Food for thought! At the farmers market I took some photographs of produce for sale. I took them with the Food Festival exhibition in mind, but later kept them in reserve. I liked the mackerel on ice but their eyes were cloudy, however it helped me make my mind up to try and find some perfect specimens.
The Farmers Market Dingle. As a group we had the opportunity to have a stall every other Friday to exhibit and sell our own photographs. We had to mount and wrap our own pieces, price them and organize a rota for the day. it was during the summer months , so we were aiming at the tourist market, however some locals purchased photographs. i sold the photographs above and i think most of the group sold some. the experience of setting up the stand and what sold in relation to how it was displayed was a useful experience.
