The Great Fur Caravan starring Veruschka shot by Richard Avedon, styled by Polly Mellen with hair by Ara Gallant ran as an epic 26 page editorial in Vogue of October 1966. The team was send by Vogue Editor in Chief Diana Vreeland to Japan for 5 weeks with 16 trunks of clothes, to capture the spirit of the book The Tale of Genji.
At the time the shoot was rumored to have cost $1 million ($7 million today) which makes it, to this day, the most expensive fashion shoot in the history of Vogue and its parent company Condé Nast.
