Excuse my French

How Real is Real?
Reality, i think, comes from knowing that something actually exists. It changes from one person to another because what one knows may not be as in the quality of what other people already know. Therefore, the concept of reality differs among people. Otherwise this question would become a paradox. Say, if a certain person would say that my reality is not real then how sure are we that that person’s reality is real?
In a simplistic perspective, we know that something is real if we see it in the physical world. It actually exists and our senses have contact with it. In a society, reality is usually the one with great popularity. Within, scientists, they observe, hypothesize, experiment then conclude to determine what is real or not.
To conclude, reality will vary because it is subjective. It must be experienced to really know that it is real. That is how one would know that it is actually there and not just an ideal state or thing. That’s how one can be really sure of what’s real and what’s not.
Who Am I Without You
Every single bit of me has been and will continue to be influenced by you. I am shaped by you. You have given me instructions and guidelines on how to live my life; from how i eat, talk, laugh, walk, sit, and sleep. You've set specific standards and norms i must follow or else i’ll feel secluded from others. You are the majority. You are the society.
I am nothing without you. I would not survive without you. And the other way around. You are nothing without me and all the others who take part in you. You and me must coexist. But that doesn’t mean I like the way you are.
I don’t like you. I don’t like how i must conform for you and because of you. I don’t like the idea of changing my original view on an issue just so you would be satisfied. I don’t like the standard you put on women. I don’t like the superiority you place on men. I don’t like your hypocritical norms.
I want you to change. I want you to change that’s why i’m starting within my self because I am part of you. And when I change, people will start being influenced too, then they will start influencing others and then others will influence many. This wont happen in a snap, I know. This won’t be big in 5 years either, but the good thing is it has been started and somewhere other people with similar ideas are also taking little steps. In this way, we are not building a cage, we are changing you.
*note. you is pertaining to a society which i have experienced. This came from a subjective point of view which may differ for people to people
apec 2015
APEC was held in the Philippines last 2015. A lot of delegates joined the conference coming from different countries resulting to a lot of bodyguards and convoys being around them, occupying the streets going to the location of the event, of course, for security reasons. These people are economic leaders who are apparently important people too. There were complaints about it adding hassle to the very busy streets of Manila.
So to speak about the social relevance of APEC in the Philippines, why people and the media talked about it, adding big buzz to it and all, I guess it’s because as it was taking place, majority of the people in Manila, were directly affected. 1st is the traffic then goes the added hassle to an already busy environment, and lastly, the canceled trips, classes, and meetings. We also have to put it mind that Manila is a very urban society among other cities and it is where bigtime tv companies are located, that’s why APEC was all over the news that time.
But also, APEC have been opening doors for economic transactions and trades since it started. Why we, the common people, don’t feel its effects now is because everything takes time, including better economy to be experienced first-hand. If ever this conference would be successful, it would provide a higher standard of living, and easier social mobility.
Me and the World
To be conscious of the points of intersections of history and one’s own life within society, I think, is the main goal of sociological imagination. To know and to be engaged in the concept of sociological imagination are acts that will help us understand the world, norms, standards and ethics within this society we live in. The more we study history and become aware of its effects in our personal lives, the more we understand and make sense of the happenings in the present. To be able to connect history and biography may provide the unanswered questions we had, thinking that they were not important. Like, why women have been inferior since the start of man’s existence. The word “man” itself says so. Answer: May be that it is part of something in a much greater scope that had happen in the past and definitely is still continuing until now which most of the people in the world are not aware of.
Having stated the concept in sociological imagination, I must also be able to apply it in myself. Starting on the day I was born; June 1, 1998. As far as my research goes noting really historical enough happened on that day, on that year so picked the year before 1998. 1st NY Women Film Festival opened on June 1, 1997. This is not the first step to advancing the women’s equality because it already started way way back. Well, this impacted me in a way, as a woman. It values femininity and women’s standpoint on filmmaking. It celebrated the way to tell a story from a different unnoticed perspective. Now, I think I enjoy more rights than what the women in the past had but still also experiences awful things that are results of being born with the gender. That event did not directly affected me. It was a series of unnoticed events that lead to the things I experience now in terms of being a woman. Imagine that event as just one of the significant factors that influence the now. Like building blocks starting from 1 block being stacked and grouped to form bars and become higher and higher as the stacking happen. And the highest peak each time represents the now.
To put it briefly I believe in the power of studying Sociology. The concept of sociological imagination clears the things that cloud my judgment on issues that society faces. This is the promise C. Wright Mills tells in his book. To be able to be aware of the intersections of history and biography within the realms of society for our advantage is why I study Sociology.
