Love on the Brain finds - Chapter 3
Angular Gyrus: Pay Attention
Place: Posteriorinferior region of the brain in the parietal lobe. Near the superior edge of the temporal lobe, wrapping around the end of the Sylvian fissure.
Function: it’s a multimodal processing center. Includes reading and complex language skills (transitions between written and spoken language); mathematics; spatial cognition (helps in understanding spatial relationships; memory retrieval; theory of mind and empathy (understanding others’ perspectives; self-awareness (sense of agency and identity)
Whoa, so now I see how well Bee Königswasser roasted Levi Ward…I love this.
Stay curious, stay witty. Dr. Marie would approve.
Part 3 of When Bee Königswasser said:
“As it turns out, the higher your aerobic fitness, the healthier your hippocampus. Not to mention the overall connectivity of your Default Mode Network and multiple axon bundles, so…I find myself resentfully acknowledging that according to science, exercise is a good thing.”
And then all that cozy, mushy, warm stuff between her and Levi Ward when they get comfortably shy and all that goodness. Also, the ‘angular Gyrus’ is officially my favorite part of the brain.
(AHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhh my organs are doing the squishy thing every time I read them they’re so cute.)
Stay curious. Stay fuzzy. Dr. Marie would approve.
Love on the Brain Finds - Chapter 2
The Vagus Nerve: blackout
Place: Running from the brain to large intestine; it’s the longest cranial nerve. Left vagus nerve travels to left side. Right vagus nerve travels to right side. Travels in the neck between the carotid artery and jugular vein.
Function: controls digestive system, heart rate, mood, and immunity. It represents the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system.
For those who are struggling to dig out their love for STEM after bad days, this post is for you >3
Also!!!!! Check out this amazing Ted-talk by Jane Weintraub talking about the majestic physiology of the nervous system-never was the same after listening to it!!
Stay curious, stay focused. Dr. Marie would approve.
Um-did you know!?
Mrs Ali Hazelwood’s Love on the Brain character Bee Königswasser is genius.
Königswasser: n (strong)
Aqua regia: and extremely powerful mixture of acids.
Freshly prepared Aqua regia (a fuming liquid) is colorless but can turn yellow, orange, or red within seconds from the formation of nitrosyl chloride and nitrogen dioxide.
What is this masterpiece?
Stay curious. Dr. Marie would approve.
When Bee Königswasser said:
“Science doesn’t work like that. It doesn’t do deadlines or consolation trophies. You can design the perfect study, sleep one hour a night, feed on nothing but despair and Lean Cuisine for months on end, and your results can still be the opposite of what you were hoping to find. Science doesn’t give a sh*t. Science is reliable in its variability. Science does whatever the f*ck it wants. God, I love science.”
God, I love her.
Stay curious. Stay nerd-y. Dr. Marie would approve.
When Bee Königswasser said:
“But what would be left of me without neuroscience? Who would I even be without my burning need to correct people who say that humans use only 10 % of their brain? (They even made a movie about this. For f*ck’s sake, does no one fact-check Hollywoood scripts?) Did you know that conservatives tend to have larger amygdalae than liberals? That taxi drivers’ hippocampi grow bigger as they memorize how to navigate London? That Brian differences predict variations in personality? We are our nervous systems, the complex combination of billions of neurons firing in distinctive patterns. What’s more exciting than spending my life figuring out what a little chunk of these neurons can accomplish?”
I’m crying. Are you?
Stay curious. Stay excited (pun intended). Dr. Marie would approve.
Love on the Brain Finds - Chapter 1
The Hebenula: disappointment
Place: borders the third ventricle, in front of the pineal gland
Function: major function in limbic system pathways, regulates dopamine and serotonin, acts as a node between the forebrain and midbrain for emotional and sensory processing.
For those who are struggling to dig out their love for STEM after bad days, this post is for you >3
Stay curious, stay focused, Dr. Marie would approve.
Marie Curie Intrusive Thoughts - Part 1
Neurosurgery is the only surgical field that uses psychology mid-op.
During awake craniotomies, neuropsychologists are sometimes present in the OR to help test memory, language, and cognitive function as the surgeon stimulates different cortical areas. This real-time mapping of function is essential when removing tumors near Broca’s or Wernicke’s areas, for example.
- International Neurosurgery Group IJCR central
Stay curious, stay nosy, Dr. Marie would approve.
“You can only use 10 % of your brain” that’s a lie, Marie Curie used 110 % of hers and still had time to drag men in French.
Stay curious, stay frisky, Dr. Marie would approve.
What Would Marie Curie Do…if she had to choose between her favorite glassware:
She’d choose
Small glass beaker
Volumetric Pipette
Graduated Pipette
Erlenmeyer flask
What Would Marie Curie Do…With Your 2 AM Sleep Schedule?
She’d be disappointed (lovingly) and probably traumatize you with her own sleep schedule.
Also, here’s a neuroscience journal found circadian rhythm disruptions wreck learning efficiency. Your hippocampus? Sleep-deprived and sad :(
Moral of the story: romanticize sleep like you romanticize your lab crush.

Stay curious, Dr. Curie would approve.
Long-term exposure to glucocorticoids following chronic stress is detrimental to cognitive processes including learning and memory. Even so,
Do you think Marie Curie would have approved of frog slaughter across schools for educational purposes?

“Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.” -Marie Curie long before social media existed; clearly, she was onto something. And we’re all here for it. Welcome to the world of STEM. This is where academic life gets beautifully chaotic. Dr. Curie would approve.
