the iconic red party
When I talk about an epic journey, I don't mean some dude going on a little boat trip, I mean the journey from Major Houlihan to Margaret.
margaret and klinger are such an underrated duo
Howard McGillin and Loretta Swit in The Mystery of Edward Drood I just came across this picture, and it's delights me because it looks like just the kind of play Margaret would enjoy. A handsome guy and and an exciting, beautiful woman in a colorful costume. She would just love to be swept up by all the emotions of a play or musical, feel all the feelings she did her best to push down in real life.
"It does not behoove me to make myself less than I am." - Edith Södergran. And Margaret Houlihan, probably. She does, a lot, though. Make herself less than she is. To fit into roles other people want her to play. Frank. Other men she dates. Her father. But she also stands with her back straight, and demands to be taken seriously, to be listened to, to be respected. She isn't always the best at giving respect. She wants other people to play the roles she has assigned for them too. She has her little failures, and then she pulls herself together. She takes the fight. And she dares to be uncomfortable. Step out of the box she was once put in, and stand on her own two legs. They might be shaky and unsure, but at least they're all hers.
(The quote is translated from Swedish, the original goes "Det anstår mig inte att göra mig mindre än jag är." Edith Södergran was a Finland-Swede poet, 1892-1923).
going insane over margaret houlihan because how is she literally everything anyone could ever want in a character all at once??
she's a good guy. she's a bad guy. she's a protagonist. she's an antagonist. she's bursting with incredible care and kindness. she's a huge jerk. her mother is an alcoholic. her father is dead. her father is alive and she's living in his shadow. she desperately wants him to be proud of her. she struggles to be proud of herself. she's a staunch patriot and the army is her life. she will lie and forge documents if it's the right thing to do. she's stern and sharp and she barks orders. she loves children. she doesn't want a cookie-cutter life. she's an angel of mercy. she wears her heart on her sleeve. she can't ever let anybody truly, truly know her. she got married and then divorced in the '50s and it was tragic and great fun both times. she fucks like crazy. she's best frenemies with the main character. she thinks he stinks and he's her dearest friend. she does whatever she wants and doesn't apologise. she craves validation. she's soft and sweet and she loves so deeply. she will shoot you with a gun. she hates explosions and the sounds of war. she's spent her whole life working to get here. she fits right in. she hates it. it's like she was engineered in a lab to be the most obsess-over-able The Character on planet earth i'm dying of margaret-itis
WIDOW’S BAY S01E08 - Your Baggage
One of the absolute best voices in Sweden. Check Erik Grönwall out, he is tremendous, fills every note with meaning and emotion.
Loretta Swit was on Match Game and it was really _________.
M*A*S*H - S7E04 "Our Finest Hour"
My favorite things about the early seasons are the promo pics, they're so adorable!
forever mourning the margaret "dear..." episode we never got, especially because she would have been one of the most interesting characters to do it with!! i can so imagine her writing home hyping up every aspect of her life and then it cuts to the reality and how miserable she actually is.
her bragging to her father about the excitement of being so close to the front, meanwhile she's terrified every time a bomb goes off. her showing off to helen about the wonderful guy she's seeing, but it's frank and he's everything she didn't describe. her telling her mother about all the patients they've saved, but leaving out the ones they couldn't. her telling lorraine about all the fun they have, but she's recounting something she wasn't a part of because she's too respectable to get involved.
bright and early
My summer so far in five Margarets. I've been:
Angry, giggly, sleepy, sweaty, tipsy. Yup, that's about it.
MASH | 8x24 Back Pay
"When I talked about acting, my parents insisted it would never happen. All my young years, I listened to a lot of negative feedback. Why didn't I accept the string of negatives and go deaf to the voices inside me? Well, it's because I had this strong I'm-going-to-show-you attitude.
Some people think my big break came when I got the M*A*S*H series. Well, it wasn't. My break came when I left home. All my young life, my parents would ask: Who do you think you are? Well, I've finally found out."
- Loretta Swit
