Got Caught On the Hook (Pearlina Fic)
That's a dumb title but I can't come up with anything better :///
Warning: it sad lmao. I just wanted to write something other than smut, so I decided, why not write some gay angst.
Sorry if there's any typos. I didn't go back in check. I just literally pulled this out of my edgy ass.
----------------------------
It was a cold, late december night.
All was quiet.
Snow gently fell outside as all the squids of inkopolis slept inside, warm and peaceful.
Marina was in deep slumber as the heater in the house blasted to ensure her tentacles wouldn't freeze at night.
She was lost in a dream about her singing career until she was abrubtly awoken by an unusual noise.
She sat up, rubbing her eyes.
The house went quiet.
She assumed she was just hearing things, so she laid back down--until she heard it again.
It sounded eerie; she had never heard anything like it. It sounded almost like grief, or mourning. To make matters worse, it seemed as if it were coming from Pearl's room.
She jumped out of the covers and rushed over to her co-star's room.
The door was shut, no light emitting from inside.
She heard nothing, but knew something was wrong.
Hesitating for a brief moment, she knocked on the inklings door.
"Pearl?" She called out.
No answer.
She opened the door, causing a loud creak to break the silence.
It was pitch black; she couldn't see anything.
Her heart sped up. Admittedly, she was somewhat afraid of the dark.
She fumbled while looking for the light switch, but found it and turned the light on.
Pearl was sitting on her bed, shivering as tears ran down her face.
"Pearlie, what happened?!" Marina asked, frantically making her way to pearl's bedside. There she sat close next to her, rubbing her back in attempt to comfort.
The inkling sniffed and looked away before letting out a word.
"You don't understand, Marina."
"Huh?"
Pearl gently pushed the octoling off of her, adjusting herself away from the girl.
"You're gorgeous. They all love you so much. They wouldn't dare make fun of you," pearl continued.
Marina clutched at her shirt, right above her heart. Pearl had never pushed her away like that, and it shot intense worry throughout her.
"Pearlie, I'm sorry... please just ignore those people. They don't see you like I do. I think you're wonderful--"
"No I'm not. Stop lying to me."
Marina scooted closer to her, only to get the same negative reaction of pearl rejecting her closeness.
"i would never lie!! You're incredibly talented and I've learned so much from you!" She continued to try to convince her.
"I literally need autotune to sound at least decent. And besides... that wasn't the point. What I'm saying is... I'm just some big foreheaded girl who still looks twelve. What was I thinking when I thought it was a good idea to start a career with an octoling."
Marina's heart sunk. Those words especially stung, creating not only a deep hurt, but confusion and fear. Why was pearl acting like this all of a sudden?
"But pearl!! I... I'm no better than you!!! It's true!"
"Drop it marina."
The octoling awkwardly stared at her lap, twiddling her thumbs anxiously.
"I think it's over," the inkling said firmly.
Marina's gaze quickly shot back up to pearl, who was looking her straight in the eye.
"What??" Marina asked as panic creeped up on her.
"No more. No more off the hook. No more us. I'm done. I can't take being made fun of anymore."
Tears flooded Marina's eyes rapidly and instantly began running down her cheeks.
She didn't know what to do.
Should she try to convince Pearl? Or would that be selfish? Should she just let pearl leave? Afterall, if she lived a more private life, people would leave her alone.
Marina desperately tried to hold herself together.
She stood up from Pearl's bed, clenching her fists.
"If that's what you... want i... I respect your decision," she stuttered as her voice violently quivered. "I'm sorry any of this happened, pearl, it was all my fault. I couldn't protect you and... and im.... I'm so sorry i..."
Pearl sat quietly, not responding to any of the other girl's apologies.
Marina could no longer take the pressure. Her heart nearly shattered as she ran back to her room, sobbing at a high volume. All she had worked for was gone. Off the hook was her ultimate dream, and just like that, she ruined it. Every snarky remark made towards pearl on live tv turned into immediate burning regret and guilt. She was angry, but only at herself.
She slammed the door shut behind her and buried her face into her pillow, nearly screaming as tears flowed like a river.
Paradise, in clear sight, but quickly vanished. And to make matters worse, she didn't just lose her girlfriend, she lost her best friend. The person she loved the most, the person she spent the most time with, the only person she felt truly bonded with. Her safety blanket. Surely she was going to freeze without her only love to warm her during the winter.
Deep in her head, she knew she could easily start a career solo, but it hurt too much. It wouldn't be fair to pearl. She knew she had to go back home.
Her emotions conflicted each other; her thoughts raced.
She gripped tightly onto her bedsheets before making a rash decision.
She stood up and rummaged through her closet, finding her old octoling gear. She nearly ripped her pajamas off and put her gear on instead. Back home it was.
She threw on her shoes, opened the door, and headed to the front of the house, leaving everything behind.
She reached the front door, placing a hand on the door knob. She nearly hesitated for two seconds, before opening the door and sprinting down the street.
It was dark and cold, the only light emitting from the dim street lights.
The cold, unforgiving winter air bit her bare skin, but she didn't care. It couldn't have possibly hurt as much as the unexpected heart break she just endured.
She kept going, but soon enough, she began to hear the sound of footsteps far behind her.
Peering back, she saw the silhouette of an inkling.
More tears fell from her face as she sped up. There was no going back now, and there was certainly no way pearl could catch up to her.
"MARINA!!!" The inkling let out an ear piercing scream.
Marina looked back one more time, not paying attention to what was in front of her.
Her foot slipped as she missed the curb, falling onto the concrete below her.
At this point, she gave in; desperately panting for air.
The footsteps far behind her grew nearer and nearer, taking only seconds as the snow rained onto her quivering body.
As pearl approached, she nearly tackled the octopus.
"You can't leave, marina!!" Pearl sobbed. "You just cant!!!"
The squid's crying grew contagious as marina joined her in hysterical, loud sobbing.
"Im sorry, marina!!! I didn't mean it, it was impulsive of me, I never meant anything I said, i was just so emotional, believe me!! I-I love you marina!!!"
Marina didn't hesitate to wrap her arms around the small girl's body, embracing her so tightly.
"I love you too, pearl."
"P-please stay?" Pearl sniffed.
"I will... I'm sorry pearl, I didn't want to leave, but it wasn't fair of me to stay and live in fame while you suffer, I just..."
Pearl squeezed marina tighter.
"No no no!! I want you to stay!! I love Off the Hook, I love singing with you! I... I can't imagine what'd I do without you!!!"
Marina rubbed the back of the squid's head to comfort her.
"Shhh, shh... I'm not going anywhere, pearlie."
The larger girl lifted the shivering squid, standing her up.
Pearl looked up at marina, smiling as her eyes continuously poured tears.
Marina reached up to wipe her tears, causing the inkling to flinch.
"You're hands are c-c-cold, heheh," she giggled.
"Heh, sorry."
Marina peered down at her partner's body, realizing she was only wearing a large t-shirt and underwear, nothing else.
"Oh gosh pearl you must be freezing out here!!! C'mon, let's go home."
Marina bent down and gestured for pearl to get onto her back for a piggyback ride. The small girl didn't hesitate, and they quickly headed back home.
The house was warm and inviting, as the two were extremely exhausted.
Marina carried pearl to her room, and laid her down on her bed, laying next to her.
She wrapped her arms around the smaller girl's frame, pulling her up against her body.
There they laid, embracing each other's warmth and company.
"I really love you, marina."
"I love you too," the octopus replied, kissing the back of the squid's neck.
Flashback.
(Too shy to post this on my main lmao)
I always see stuff where Marina is nervous up on stage, but what about pearl?
----------------------------------------
It was splatfest night.
Music was blaring, lights were flashing, and I was up on stage jumping around, enjoying myself.
It was the 4th song of the night, and there was a decently large crowd.
Marina had the voice of an angel, and she was surely enjoying herself. The way she moved her body made it almost hard to believe that she was once a shy octoling.
Her voice echoed throughout the square.
I looked down at the crowd, all the young squids looking up at me.
As joyful as it was, I felt a familiar feeling, one that sent a shiver down my spine.
I looked back at marina who had just finished her chorus.
In approximately 2 stanzas, it was my turn to sing.
In the crowd I could pick out a small group of inklings who were laughing.
What were they laughing at? There was no way for me to tell. But the familiar feeling kept creeping up on me.
I wondered if they were laughing at me.
Too focused on that situation, I had realized it was my turn to sing.
I looked back at marina who winked at me, queing me to start.
The way she winked reminded me of my parents. How they winked at me for luck, even though whatever I was doing was surely to fail.
I looked back at the crowd, frozen, as my heart rapidly sped up.
I missed the beat. No matter how hard I tried, the words refused to come out of my mouth.
Everyone began laughing. I made a complete fool of myself, just how I did before. Nothing was going to change.
I dropped the mic and ran off stage, looking for somewhere to hide.
I quickly found a bathroom and shut the door behind me, locking myself in a stall.
My hands started to shake while I nearly hyperventilated.
What had just happened? Why did I do that?
I gripped onto the toilet seat in order to stop my violent tremors.
My mind was racing with anxiety and paranoia. It felt like everyone was now talking about me.
I then realize by the silent, echoing bathroom that the music had turned off. Surely I had fucked everything up.
"Pearl!!!" I heard marina call out in the distance.
"Have you seen pearl? She ran off stage!!"
"Hm, I think I saw her run to the bathroom. Maybe she's feeling sick?" An inkling responded to the octoling.
Hiding in my stall, I heard footsteps run into the bathroom.
"Pearl??" Her voice echoed.
I stayed silent for a moment before unlocking the stall door and opening it slightly.
Marina sped over to me opened the door, stepping in.
"Pearlie, what happened?? Are you okay?" She asked as she stroked my cheek affectionately. The look on her face made me feel terribly guilty. She was clearly extremely worried.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
Her expression grew more concerned.
"please... don't lie to me. If there's something wrong, tell me."
I swallowed hard.
"I... I had a flashback," I admitted.
She blinked in confusion.
"Sometimes my past comes back to me... I went through too much as a child. I still feel like one. I haven't changed. I'm still under five feet."
"Pearl..."
I shifted my gaze to the ground, avoiding eye contact.
"When I was 14... I really fucked everything up. Those speakers blew up because of me. Because I'm an utter failure. All those kids had a right to laugh at me," I spoke.
"Pearl, no-" i interrupted the octoling.
"My voice is awful. I'm a short stack who deserves to be called a freak. Why in the world did I ever think I could sing in a folk competition?"
"pearl-" i stopped her once more.
"I can hardly even understand why you even befriended me. I'm way more unwanted here than an octoling," my voice started to crack as a lump creeped up my throat.
"Listen to me--"
"I HATE MYSELF, MARINA!!" I shouted, looking back up at her as tears poured out of my eyes.
She stared back in shock.
I tried to get up and run out of the stall, but since she was bigger than me, she was able to wrap her arms around me and pull me into a hug.
"Don't run away again!! Please! I love you!"
Those words broke my heart. I was only making things worse. To add insult to injury, I felt something wet drop onto my shoulder, which could only mean marina started crying as well.
"You're not your past, pearl... I know i wasn't there to see it happen, but I know the whole thing was an accident," she paused to sniffle. "You're such an amazingly talented and beautiful girl. It's okay, it's okay that you had a flashback. You didn't mess anything up."
She sobbed inbetween her sentences, then began to grip me harder. I held her tight, my hands digging into her back as tears continuously flowed.
"You have fans who love you. You have me who loves you. I understand, and everyone else will too... but please, no more crying, I can't stand seeing you like this!! It breaks my heart!!!"
I had never ever cried like this in front of her. Sure, I cried when I dropped my phone in the toilet, but it wasn't ever like this.
"I-im sorry," I stuttered.
"Don't be sorry. Just please be okay."
After an eternity, we let each other go.
Marina took her fingers and gently wiped the tears off my face.
"C'mon, let's go take a break, alright?"
I nodded and smiled, grabbing onto Marina's hand as we turned to exit the bathroom.
