Today I think Iāve finalised myĀ theory on how, instead of blowing his own brains out and being dead, James Moriarty is, in fact, alive.Ā
The first thing Iām going to focus on is the handshake. A lot of time is spent looking at Moriarty and Sherlock as they shake hands, moments before Moriarty shoots himself in the roof of the mouth. If you cast your mind back to earlier in the episode, when Sherlock is saved by one of Moriartyās henchman, moments after he shakes his hand in thanks, the henchman is killed by a sniper. Bear that in mind for later on, a handshake is a signal to shoot.
Next is the spray that Moriarty uses on the guard when he is acquiringĀ the crown jewels. The sound it makes is very distinctive, that of an inhaler, and a split second after being sprayed, the guard drops unconscious to the floor. This sound is heard an instant before Moriarty shoots himself, indicating he uses it on himself (I did not find this myself full credit goes to mijdyu18 on youtube, explained in his video hereĀ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF4UAHrWwfJvNXnYvBmzBygĀ ā
Finally, is the idea put forward in The Abominable Bride of another gun being used to create the gunshot when Amelia Ricoletti. This theory is explained by Moriarty, and so leads me to believe this is an elaborate way of him revealing how he did it. He never fired the gun (or if he did it was blank) and the gunshot was actually from a sniper in a building nearby.Ā
(Another point, not necessarily evidence, is that, the sound from a handgun, in a large open area like the roof, would surely not make that much noise, and instead, that is the noise of a larger gun, for instance, a sniper? Just an extra thought.)
So to tie everything together:
1) Moriarty has the spray that knocked the guard out in the gun.
2) The handshake is used as a signal to allow the sniper time to ready themselves.Ā
3) Moriarty puts the gun to his mouth, knocks himself out, and the sniper simulates the noise by firing near to him.
4) The unconscious Moriarty falls backwards onto a blood packet in the collar of his jacket, so that it seems as if the blood is coming from his head (also if he shot himself in the mouth as he did, the blood would not be coming from the back of his head but the top).
