An update on my hyperparathyroidism journey.
No surgery for me, at least not now. Every scan they can utilize has been utilized and for some reason, they cannot find a single enlarged or diseased parathyroid gland. All that he's found is a standard thyroid nodule, which is unrelated and the biopsy showed was just that, a thyroid nodule. Not a parathyroid adenoma. The blood tests confirm I have the condition, but none of the scans will show which one is the problem. And because the scans won't show him which one is messed up, he refuses to do the surgery. There's an exploratory surgery that can be done, but it's 3+ hours long and there's a high risk of vocal chords being cut/nicked—as well as a risk that even if he removes ALL of my glands, it still may not fix the issue—so he doesn't want to just go digging in there. I'm glad he's not doing surgery just to do it, especially since I didn't realize it was so risky for my voice, but I'm so frustrated I could scream that I still don't know why this is happening to me. He's sending me back to my endocrinologist to make sure there's no other reason I'm testing this way/having her check me for secondary hyperparathyroidism. So here we go again. No surgery. I don't see him for six more weeks, in which time I'll have hopefully seen her and found out what's going on. Kind of relieved to be done with doctors for a short bit, as I'm sure she'll have a waiting time for me to see her of at least a couple weeks. I still think the adenoma is just not big enough to show on a scan yet, but we'll see. Maybe it's secondary, which is honestly not ideal either, as it's tied in with kidney function. My body is working against me either way. And I hate it. Onward I go.
