Ulterior Motive | Marina & Gia

Gianna looked down at the photos as Marina laid out a fairly standard game plan. Gianna enjoyed her associates, she enjoyed having others around who could think for themselves and didn’t depend on Gianna to dictate their every move and order. She knew Citrine shared this appreciation with her, and it was honestly why Gianna was brought into the pride to begin with. Though, Gianna surely proved herself in more ways than that one, she was just hoping she could prove her worth with her missions in this sleepy little town. 

A light scoff left her lips at the sight of the little blonde with the Ares boy. “Throw some shiny things her way, she looks like the easily distracted type.” Gianna said nonchalantly, caring not for the blonde firmly attached to the object of her current mission. “Though, you know I don’t have an issue with collateral damage should she prove difficult to detach.” Gianna’s lips curved slightly. “I’d like to accompany you.” She nodded to the men standing in the foyer of their rental home. “They don’t like to let me go out along often, though I’m sure you can convince them I’ll be in good hands with you, Marina.”  

Marina's lip curled into a small smirk, "That can be done," The little magpie can be drawn away easily enough, "I try to avoid collateral where I can help it, she must detach from him at some point in their day." A plan was already forming to catch the man alone, and the photos of him at the gym seemed to be the ticket so far. No sign of a small blonde woman there.

Gia's request caught her off guard, however, as she looked up, "Oh," She was clearly taken aback, perhaps a little ego wounding moment initially as her mind jumped to the possibility her boss might not think she's cracked up to the task. When she explained further however, she nodded, feeling somewhat at ease, "Sure. I mean. It ought to be a pretty cut and dry mission." She pointed to the photos she had been eyeing, "He goes to the gym alone, I think that's when we'll catch him. Looking at these timestamps, we've got a couple of hours to burn, then we can snatch him up. Sound good to you?"

Gianna smirked at Marina’s words. They were exactly what she wanted to hear from the woman. Gianna hated walls, she hated that they ended up in her way, and she hated having to go around them, or bust through them or work her way over them. Walls were very inconvenient, and while Gianna was smart, and often good at pulling her resources- Gianna hated walls. Vaughn leaving town and leaving nothing but a burned up chard in his wake was a wall. A very big one. 

Gianna took a breath, letting it out slowly as Marina looked over the file. Her eyes cast down at the back of the wooden chair that her hands rested on. When Marina spoke, Gianna’s eyes moved up. “Paying him a visit would be lovely.” Gianna said. “Though, since task numero one is taking his sweet time getting back to us about Citrine’s little gift, I’d like to tag along.” Gianna stated, before leaning forward and plucking the folder from Marina’s hands. “Besides, it’ll be nice to see what fine child Mr. Ayres left behind for us to visit.” She glanced forward at Marina. “On a scale of one to ten, how stubborn do you think he’s going to be?” 

Marina looked over the photos of the young man, who was literally head to toe in tattoos. She scoffed, he looked like a gang-banger with a slick haircut, Marina supposed that that made sense given his heritage. It was either an act of belonging, or an act of rebellion, the fact such an appearance could point to both was terribly ironic if you asked her.

She sucked on her teeth, Axel was indeed one who seemed to take his precious time, but it mattered not. A trip away from the big city was probably the closest thing she was going to get to a vacation in a long time, so she didn’t loathe the idea of being stuck here for a while. She blew out her cheeks at Gia’s question, “If he’s anything like his father? An eleven. But we’ll have to wait and see. I can go and scope out where he lives, try find a time where he isn’t around this one.” She tapped a photo of Roman accompanying the blonde girl he lived with.

“I guess so, but I mean I wasn’t terrible.” She shrugged but listened, “True, and it was a nice bike. Did you see the freakin’ pegs on the back of it! I always wanted a bike with pegs, or just for my brother’s to have one so I didn’t have to sit on the handlebars.” She pouted and thought back on the memory. 

She nodded, “yeah, his bikes outside anyway.” Her brows furrowing, “There might be more of them in there, though and I know those kids they are like freaking spider monkeys. They will latch on to you in a heartbeat.” She grinned at the Hook reference though and nodded, a smirk on her face, “Bangarang, Rufio?” 

She could only glance back at Lydiya with a bemused look over how she gushed over the bike, “Yeah. I saw.” Quirky thing, wasn’t she, this one?

Marina chuckled, “I’d crow for ya but I feel that’d give us away.” She joked as she started heading towards the group, “I’ve handled worse than spider monkeys--” Her tone immediately changed as he barked at the boys when they grew closer, “Hey kid! Yeah, you, in the red sweater. Get your ass over here.” Marina snarled, some of the kids fled on their bikes, but lucky for them their little thief was part of the pack that wanted to get cocky and moved toward them. She stepped up to meet him, “I believe you owe my friend here fifty bucks, cough up.” She demanded flatly, slowly growing closer to the boy as his friends circled them both.

Matt, once again, averted his gaze as she cleaned and it wasn’t until she crumpled the paper towels in her hand that he felt it was fine to look her way again. He hated her impression of him was coming across as some sort of asshole but he knew that wasn’t really in his control anymore. All he could do was act his usual self and, hopefully, that first bad impression would be nothing but a distant memory. However that thought slipped away when he noticed the gun. He was used to seeing those given he hung out with some cops but he wasn’t used to see it outside of law enforcement. 

“I don’t know how true that statement is for other towns,” he said as he tried to not think too much about the gun. There were a number or reasons why she was packing and he didn’t think it was his business to know. “When it comes to me I do try to be as welcoming and helpful as possible,” he said as he slipped the plastic bag through is bike handle. “I’m Matt. Are you new to town?”

Marina shrugged lightly, she couldn't say that she visited many small towns so she could only base her views on this one. A bemused scoff left her lips, "Well look at you being the knight in shining armour," She chuckled, sitting herself back up on her perch on the wall, "Matt. I'm Marina, and yeah, just here for a couple weeks on a job and then I expect we'll be toddlin' off back to Detroit once we're done." She explained, "Don't think I've actually had the chance to travel this far in a long while. Normally the city keeps us busy." She shrugged lightly before looking back his way. "So you a local yourself?" Marina asked lightly, figuring she might as well pass the time until Gianna was done in the store with some casual small talk until she had to be moved along as part of her duties, “Where’re all the fun places in town?”

Lydiya sighed, her shoulders slumping forward as a pout came over her face. “It’s a long story. I took on the role of Peter Pan at the annual Fayre and now my Lost Boys run amok all over this damn town. Next time I see them I’m jerking a knot in their asses.” She scowled at the sidewalk in front of here wishing she would have caught him and grabbed him by the ear like the teachers used to do her. 

Lydiya narrowed her eyes, “It’s only like fifty bucks. No big deal. I’m sure the kid needed it.” She waved it off but watched the woman carefully and followed behind her. “You sure you wanna do this? He is just a kid, I mean we can’t really beat him up or anything.” She said keeping up with the woman in front of her. Her heels clicking against the concrete. “Most kids need it, they aren’t all bad.”

She snickered, “Sounds like Peter suffered a mutiny, you must have been a shitty captain.” Marina jabbed with a smirk as she started to follow the trail. Marina rolled her eyes, “I’m not gonna beat up a kid.” She scoffed indignantly, “No kid with a brand new bike needs fifty bucks. I think his parents are keeping him well kept. It ain’t about money anyway, it’s about manners.”

She kept following her nose, into the alley and around into the next block. She saw a pack of kids on bikes further up, “He there?” She asked Lydiya as she turned back to face her, “He’s gonna get a nice lesson in what happens when you steal, and you’ll get your money back. You might even earn the respect of the Lost Boys again. I can be your Rufio.” Marina grinned wickedly.

Acacia huffed at the truth of the statement but she didn’t argue. It was true, she could hardly deny that. There was just something so fun about pulling the trigger on a something so innocent and innocuous only to have it be able to take a person’s life without thought. There was something so poetic about the unassuming bit of metal cradled in the hand of the holder that could snuff out the life of a giant. Oh, how Acacia loved the power it held in its chambers. “This place could use a little spark,” she said simply. In the hands of anyone, a gun was dangerous. In the hands of Acacia, an expert marksman, it was beyond lethal. 

“That’s too long,” she said, eyes scanning over the tops of the people that walked by. In the heels she wore, even the men were shorter than her. She had no trouble looking over them. She scanned the little shops on the street and considered a few of them, but none of them met her needs. She clicked her tongue and the little nickname. “Killer Queen, I like that. Almost as much as Red Queen.” The handle had been given to her after Oscar’s death for her ability to extract revenge on the people that had killed him. It had been a particularly bloody show. Eight pints of blood times five people… Oh yes, the color red was all anyone saw when she was done. Her clothing had been ruined. Lady War had been laid to rest and the Red Queen had risen. 

She spotted a shop on the corner that looked promising and cocked her head in the direction. “Clock Room,” she said when she caught the name. “Let’s start there.” High-end fashion was Acacia’s area, not Marina’s but she only needed a pair of pants. That shouldn’t be too difficult to find… she hoped. 

“You’re definitely the Red Queen, dollface.” Marina added with a light chuckle. Even though she said it, Killer Queen was a little on the nose, and when codenames were born from someone’s actions, they tended to stick for life. Marina remembered that day she’d earned it, it hadn’t been a good day. Her nose wrinkled when Acacia pointed out the boutique on the corner, “There, are you serious?” Marina asked her as she hopped down from the wall to throw away the rest of her ice cream pot and spoon, “That’s like, fancy clothes. I don’t need fancy jeans, I just need… Fuck it where’s a hiking store I’ll just get some hiking pants.” They’d do the same job, not look as nicely fitting as her jeans did but it was at least a little more in line with her work. She started to look around the rest of the street, but in this particular area didn’t seem to have what she was looking for, “Ugh. This place better not be too expensive.” Marina always begrudged the idea of paying extortionate amounts for clothes that more often than not got ruined. The leather jacket she wore was probably the longest surviving item of clothing she actually owned.

Matt watched her work while he held on to his bike. He brought the kickstand down and made sure it was secure before he let it go. His own bottle of water went in his hand and he drank from it as she rubbed at the black denim. “I’ll make sure,” he said because there really wasn’t a way he could argue this. If he had been paying attention then he would have kept this from happening in the first place. What was it with him lately? Was he always this clumsy or was this something he noticed more of over the last couple months? 

“Do you think that’ll be enough to get the ice cream out?” he asked, trying not to seem a creep who liked to watch people rub at themselves in front of him. Matt looked away and brought his attention to a car which rounded the corner at that moment. “So, does this mean I messed up my rep with you already?” This was asked with a small smile, pretty sure he knew her answer but, at the same time, there was no telling what she would tell him since they didn’t know each other.

A smirk curved her lips at his question, and she peered up at him from her leaned over angle, “It’s improving.” She admitted, because he had dashed off pretty damn fast to help her out, granted she had held his bike hostage in the mean time, but it had helped to improve this awkward first impression. Marina finished up cleaning off the ice cream, it wasn’t perfect but it was as good as it was going to get. The water helped dissolve the very worst of it, small victories. She cocked her jaw, and scrunched up the used tissues in her hand, “Well, that’s about as good as that’s gonna get. I’ll use that stain remover when I get back.” She took the pen out of the bag to tuck into the inside pocket of her jacket, unintentionally flashing the gun hidden beneath there in the holster.

“Anyway, thanks for, y’know, not being a dick about being a dick. Makes a nice change.” She folded her arms over her chest, leaning back against the wall, “I guess the whole ‘everyone’s nice in small towns’ might not be a myth after all.” Not that she’d met many others here yet…

She had lived a long life and was used to people being rude to her and also to people around her,thankfully she had learned to tune the majority of it out and to focus on helping out those people who had something rude happen to them. 

She stayed quiet as the woman in front of her cleaned off the ice cream from her jeasns,something that looked like it would take more than tissues to get it out. “Couldn’t agree with you more.”She replied softly. “Oh my name is Aleksandra Garver,most people just call me Aleks.”

Marina accepted that these jeans were going to need a proper wash, but the tissues were enough to at least make them look a little neater and so that she didn’t end up embarrassing herself in front of her employer. Speaking of, Marina spied the woman emerging from the store, “Well it was great to meet you Aleks,” Marina smiled toward her, “you came in the nick of time, duty calls and I need to get back to work.” She nodded over towards the woman. She stepped away, but then turned as she moved to point towards her, “I owe you a drink! You can catch me at the Gaslight, ask around for Marina and they’ll pointcha in the right direction.” Marina pulled down her aviator sunglasses, a grin flashing across her features before she headed back over to Gianna. Time to return to henchmen business.

When the shirt was handed back, free of ice cream, he nodded and pulled it back on, smoothing out the faded wrinkles until they were completely gone. He thought about calling home to ask his mom for the best way to get rid of ice cream stains from jeans, since it wouldn’t hurt to know for future reference. “I shouldn’t be gone too long,” he said as he took a step back. He ought to get something else while there as a way to say he was sorry for causing this mess. 

Matt turned and took off at a jog, turning a corner and going towards the main part of town where the store was. While there he talked to his mom and hung out in the detergent aisle. The woman wasn’t going to take her pants off so there was no chance for her to soak them. In the end he got towels, one of those detergent sticks and a couple large bottles of water. He didn’t know what else to get so he hoped the water would be okay. 

After fifteen minutes or so he returned to the scene, bag in hand, and went to her. “I hope the stain isn’t dried out. If it is I got some water so you can wet it a little before using this Tide stick.” Not that he had any idea how to use one of those things but he figured there were instructions that could be followed.

Marina hopped back up onto the wall when he jogged off, grumbling under her breath at the state of her jeans. She tucked the bike underneath her legs to keep it leaning against the wall as she waited for the man to return. Her gaze flickered to the store that she knew Gianna was still inside, hoping that she wouldn’t come out now and ask her why she’d taken a bike hostage. She hoped to have this all squared away by then. She waited patiently, and in the mean time ate the remainder of her ice cream that hadn’t splattered all over her. Eventually, he returned, and she sighed in relief at the sight of the bag in his hand, “Thanks.” She took the bag from him, luckily in her line of work it meant that laundry was actually a pretty damn important thing. Blood could be a real bitch to get out, but that’s why you wore black. Marina lifted up her legs to scoot his bike out from between her and the wall so that he could reclaim it, and then turned to open up the bag and go for a towel and a bottle of water. She’d use the stick when she got back to the house, because she had a feeling that she was going to have one of those awkward not-quite watermarks where the icecream had melted. She soaked the towel in some water and started to scrub away, the ice cream fairly easily lifting from the denim, “Be a little more careful in future yeah? Save yourself a few bucks, and your reputation.”

Gianna came to this little trap of a town with exactly two objectives. One was taking his sweet ass time deciding if he wanted to play ball or not, and frankly she was giving him more time to decide than she wanted. The other was someone she wanted to hit up for contacts, and by hit up, Gianna would beat it out of the poor sod if that got her what she wanted. 

That was, until he burnt his damn trailer down and ditched town. 

Well, the burning it down was questionable. Vaughn was good at faking his own death, but he was smart enough to know that a fire just screamed ‘Hey guys I’m still alive’ to anyone he wanted to convince. Hence her not being convinced. But the fire was besides the point, the point was that the easier of her two objectives was now the hard one, and Gianna didn’t like when the board flipped on her like that. 

Gianna walked into the room, heels of her black suede Christian’s clicking on the marble tile like a dream. She had a folder in her hand, a dossier on the last remaining Ayres man in town. He was a bore, but he had strings to pull, and that was all Gianna cared about. “Marina.” Gianna said to catch her attention as she strode in, hand flicking the folder so it landed on the dining table between them. “He looks like a dead end.” Gianna sighed, a fake pout forming on her lips. “We need to make him a not dead end.” Her hands clasped in front of her, deep red nails a lovely contrast against her tanned skin. 

Marina heard the signature click click click of heels on hard flooring, it was a sound that she had long associated with two things; authority approaching, or Acacia. But by the feline scent that came into the room, Marina knew it to be the former. She turned as she looked to the bastet when she addressed her, “Ma’am.” She nodded, eyes casting downward at the file that was tossed onto the table, “No such thing as a dead end unless you’re actually dead.” Marina commented as she reached for the file and drew it closer to her. 

She lifted it into her hands and opened it up to see a number of long lens photographs of the son of Vaughn Ayres. They’d investigated the daughter too, but decided to leave her be when discovering she had a young child to take care of. Roman on the other hand had far less strings. The link to a founding family member was a small menace, but not one that would impede their operation. Not in her eyes at least. She skimmed through, looking for an address and quickly finding it.

“Want me to go pay him a visit?” She asked lifting her gaze back onto the feline before her, “I can try to convince him to aid our cause.” Marina offered, “He must know something, even if he doesn’t necessarily know it, I can try jog his memory.”

Lydiya nodded and straightened herself, finally catching her breath. “Good, because I still got a kid to kill.” Her eyes narrowed in the direction the kid had disappeared before turning to look at the woman. “Let’s just say he took me owing him seriously.” 

She began spouting out the story about the Fayre and how she had gathered a group of kids that became her little gang before getting to the actual point. She took a deep breath and let it burst from her as she spoke, “He stole my cash. Snatched it right from my hand.” She pouted, “kid was pretty good at it at the Fayre but now he has gone, way… way to far.” Her brow furrowed in anger she crossed her arms over her chest, turning back the alley the kid had turned down. 

Marina’s brows furrowed some, “You… A grown woman, owing a kid? What d’you owe him, a bed time story or somethin’?” She scoffed as she cleaned off her jeans. It wasn’t perfect, but at least you’d only notice she spilled something on it if you got close, which no one ought to be today. She’d be a little sticky, but there were worse things in life.

Her expression soured when she revealed what the kid had done, “He stole from you?” Marina straightened up, cleaning off her fingers where she’d used them to flick ice cream off herself from earlier, “Well, it looks to me like we need to go get your money back.” Time to live up to a stereotype, not that she cared that much as she took in a nice deep breath to hone in on the scent of a child - which, really wasn’t that hard, she had it in no time.

Locked on, it followed the path that Lydiya had chased him in earlier, “Let’s go catch ourselves a crook, huh?” She smirked, figuring Gia would be fine to be left for just a short while.

Aleksandra was always taught about how a little bit of kindness goes a long way and it was one of the reasons why she always carried tissues with her. She had no use for them, apart from the odd spill of something on herself, but she knew that other people would need them more than she did. 

“You’re welcome.”She replied with a warm and gentle smile appearing on her lips as the stranger took the tissues from her and wiped away the ice cream. “I would have to agree with you on that,sometimes they can be the rudest people on the planet.”

It was still kind of surreal to her that someone she didn’t know would just help her without question. But then she had been told that Spiritvale was your quintessential small town and that meant everything from everyone being in everyone’s business as well as the famous friendliness and how people were just so much more approachable. Yeah. Definitely weird. Marina was too used to people being frosty and defensive. City living for you. Marina dabbed away at the ice cream, it wasn’t perfect but it at the very least got the worst of the spill off of her jeans. It would only be if someone decided to really hone in on her crotch that they’d actually notice the faint outline of a stain on her thigh, so she felt she would be in the clear, “Assholes. The lot of ‘em.” She grumbled as she scrunched up the tissues and tossed them in the trash, “So, who do I have to thank for rescuing me from my dairy doom?”

The rage darted at him when she spoke and Matt hesitated. He expected her to be pissed, who wouldn’t be, yet it didn’t prepare him for this. The guy looked down at the ice cream, it still bright against her pants and the only thing he could think to do was take off his shirt and hand it to her. He wasn’t on his bike long enough to sweat and he didn’t have anything else he could offer. He didn’t think to wear an undershirt with the t-shirt and was very aware he stood off the side of the road shirtless, but it wasn’t as if he were ashamed. Far from it. He just hoped she didn’t think this was him looking for any reason to show his body off.

“This is all I have,” he said as he took two careful steps forward to give it to her. “I can get some water and one of those Tide sticks if you need. The store isn’t far from here,” Matt always felt that need to help and fix. It was engrained in him. He also felt terrible for causing this mess to happen in the first place.

And then all of a sudden the man was stripping, prompting a very confused brow raise from Marina when he approached her to hand the shirt to her. Unfortunately, his worry that she was assuming he was taking the chance to flaunt was warranted, because that’s exactly what she felt he was doing. Not that it made much of a difference to her, Matt possessed a piece of anatomy that didn’t interest Marina in the least.

Her jaw cocked, but she took the shirt from him, warm from where he had been wearing it. Marina looked down at the splatter on her jeans, ugh, it really was a mess,  “No shirt no service though ain’t it?” She commented, a policy that most stores tended to operate. Marina handed his shirt back to him, “How’s about you hit that store, grab me some napkins and we’ll go from there.” She was walking now, but not towards the direction of any store, she laid her hand on the handles of his bike, “And I’ll take care of this whilst I wait. Sound like a plan?”
