Winning Looks Like Losing
@marinerwolf
When Micah and Xander got the news that they were going to be having twins, the blond thought he might get so excited that he’d faint or his heart would burst. Two perfect little pups that were going to be all his, Xander and his perfect little children. It had nearly taken him half an hour to stop crying from happiness as he looked at the ultrasound picture of the twins. Later they learned it would be two little boys. Honestly Micah never cared what his pups would be, he was going to love them regardless and never let them go.
As had been the trend through out his entire pregnancy, there were complications, pains, aches, the brief period where there was spotting (Micah nearly had a heart attack, it took Xander nearly 15-20 minutes to calm him down), the scare and threat of preeclampsia, and a few other things. However, Micah was able to weather it all with Xander by his side. The other always assuring him it would all be fine, and he believed him.
Recently things had seemed to let up, which oddly weirded Micah out, but he counted his blessings, seeing it as things in his body finally evening out. It was roughly a little under two months out from his due date, and frankly he was becoming more and more excited to finally have his pups with him and in his arms. He was ready to start cuddling them and loving on them. That’s when things went sideways.
Micah woke up in excruciating pain, which it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that something was horribly wrong. You know, before the little wolf noticed blood. Thanks to Xander’s connections through all his various jobs, they were able to get Micah to a doctor that just happened to live closer than any hospital (not that they had been keen on hospitals anyways and they’d been seeing this person throughout the pregnancy) and was willing to wake up for the emergency.
The blond was beyond panicked, in pain and fear stricken. Upon reaching the doctor’s house, Micah had to be taken into a back room immediately, but Xander had to stay behind in the living room, left alone with nothing but Micah’s blood on him.

The only thing that had made Xander happier than having his beautiful mate was when they found out they were going to have their pups. A real family, something he never thought he’d ever be blessed with.
Throughout the pregnancy, Xander was always there. He comforted Micah however he needed to be, be it with words or physical affection. His connections gave them the help he was willing to trust with the life of his mate and their children, and despite all the worries, he had hope everything would turn out just fine. It had to, right? They deserved a little good in their lives. Micah did, at the very least.
Until the night Micah woke up in pain and bleeding. Xander had never felt a deeper fear or more worry in his entire life. And just like he always did, he put on a brave face and assured Micah everything would be okay. They just had to get to the doctor. It would be all right. They would have their pups and it would all be worth it.
Having to be separated from Micah once they were at the doctor’s home only further put him on edge. He was left with the strong scent of Micah’s blood on his clothes and the sounds of his mate’s pained screaming echoing throughout the house. It killed him knowing there was nothing he could do for Micah. He felt weak, useless, hating that this was something he couldn’t protect his omega from.
The worst yet was when Micah screamed. Wailed was probably more accurate. He almost burst into the room they were in despite the strict orders to stay put. Something was terribly wrong and there was nothing he could do, but he needed to be at his mate’s side.
The whirlwind of emotions that went through him when the doctor finally came out and explained. He was angry, devastated, worried. There was a small reminder in the back of his mind that they did have one of their little ones. But the pain that racked through him at the loss of the other was drowning it out.
He almost felt like it was all a dream, a very bad dream he would surely wake up from soon, when he was finally let back to see Micah. His heart ached seeing his mate cradling their lost pup and crying. His own eyes burned with unshed tears as he approached. He slowly lowered himself down beside Micah on the bed and he wrapped his arms around him, hugging him and their son close.
