The Worst Mario Sidequest
So you know how, when you're going for 100% in a video game, there's always that objective.
The one where fun goes to die and you're just left feeling miserable the whole way through. Like capturing Morty in Luigi's Mansion 3 or getting all the Sparkle Gems in Patissière 2 in Princess Peach Showtime.
Well, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door has one sidequest (or trouble, as the game calls it) like that too.
And mamma mia, is it awful...
Now what character traits do you think of when you think of Mario?
Being a good brother to Luigi?
Being a humble sweetheart everyman?
Being the perfect hero who will help anyone in need?
Well this sidequest takes all of those traits... and tosses them straight into the trash.
The Trouble:
So this Toad girl wants to meet Luigi in person to give him cake?
Sounds like a simple enough problem to solve. And it'll feel good to do something nice for Luigi. Especially since all of Mario's interactions with him up until now have had...
...an overwhelming flavour of dismissive apathy.
Without a single moment of kindness from Mario's end.
Huh, that's weird. When I try to tell Luigi about what's going on, he just does his usual dialogue. I can't tell him about his biggest fan.
Is the game bugged or something? ...I'm going to ask around. Maybe someone has some hints on what to do.
[BTW, I will be transscribing most of the text because Tumblr has an image limit.]
You know, you and Luigi look a lot alike. If you swapped clothes, even I might have trouble telling you apart.
By the by, did you find the badge in Poshley Sanctum that changes your clothes? It was high up, deep in there.
Oh and by the way, there's some guy who uses a badge to pretend to be Luigi!
I know that green suit is dreamy, but come ON!
I would never fall for that, so don't even THINK about trying to trick me that way!
I really have no choice but to do this, do it?
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! I can tell... I can totally tell! I've never met him before...
But I can ABSOLUTELY TELL! YOU'RE THE REAL LUIGI!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! I knew it! This is so cool! Omigosh! What should I say?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! I'm totally freaking him out! I'm freaking out Luigi!
Oh nooo... What should I do? Oh! RIght! Duh! Duh! Duh! The cake!
The one I baked was a total loss... but Zess T. did a great job on this one!
Here you go, Mr. Luigi! Please take this!
Hey, Bro! Say, why are you dressed like me?
Hey! Who...who do you think you are! You filthy imposter! POLIIIIIIIIIIICE!
Whaaaaaat? I'm no impostor! I'm Luigi!
Hey, say something, Mario!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! EW! EW! EW! How DARE you speak to Luigi, you liar! You LIE-igi!
You'll NEVER be Luigi, no matter how many green hats you wear! Now stop interrupting our special time!
But...I'm pretty sure I'm me! This is a nightmare... A bad dream! I won't believe it! Wake up, Luigi!
The remake only made one change to this sidequest. And that change was to add the sound of Luigi crying.
UGH! Er, oh no... What have I done?! You've seen such a horrible side of me─the worst side!
Don't... Don't worry about it? Oh thanks, really, Luigi. You're so sweet!
And thanks for coming today! I will always treasure these moments. Always!
So please... come see me again, OK?
If you speak to her again while wearing the L Badge:
Oh, wow! You came again!
Luigi remembers me! Luigi remembers me!
My Breakdown:
So that was an utterly miserable expierience from start to finish. Now I'm going to ramble out all the reasons I hate it.
First, there's the elephant in the room of Mario not only not standing up for Luigi, not only taking the side of Luigi's bullies, but actively enabling their bullying of his little bro.
Because that's a character trait Mario is well known for... *bitter sarcasm*
Now one might claim it's unfair compare this moment to media that came out later. Plus there's the technicalities of Paper Mario being a seperate version of Mario.
So from this point on, I'll only be discussing things from this game itself.
Note that this does not make the situation any better.
If anything, the rest of the game makes the trouble look even worse.
For starters... remember this line from Peach much earlier in the game?
When you love someone, you will do anything to help when that person is in trouble.
Well...
Luigi had directly asked for Mario's help, while he was suffering from a problem Mario caused, yet Mario chose to side with the people giving Luigi trouble.
Going by this game's definition of love, Mario feels the furthest thing from it towards Luigi.
If he did love his brother, or even show him the bare minimum amount of respect, he wouldn't have turned the head of the Luigi Fanclub against the man in green.
Wait... a person who steals someone else's identity... and turns people who would normally be on their side against them?
Where have I seen that before?
Oh yeah!!!
That's exactly what Doopliss did to Mario back in Chapter 4!!!
Mario had suffered the same exact thing. He knows just how much this hurts. And yet he willingly put his little brother through the same pain after the fact.
Why did they think it was a good idea to have the story's hero do the exact same thing as the villains, with no exonerating external circumstances? And to reward him for it on top of that??
If anything, what Mario did to Luigi is worse, because Luigi is terrible in social situations, something Mario knows, meaning he'd have an even harder time standing up for himself.
Oh... and speaking of Chapter 4...
The whole reason Vivian joined the party was because Mario showed her the kindness she never got from her abusive older sisters.
So why did they think it would be a good idea to have Mario treat his own younger brother so badly??
Paper Mario in this sidequest is at odds not only with Mario throughout the rest of the franchise, but with himself in the same game!!
And it's not like the writers didn't know what a healthy sibling relationship looks like.
After all, this game has Punio & Petuni, Jolene & Prince Mush, the two Toads from the harbour, heck even Hooktail and Gloomtail of the positive end VS Beldam and Marilyn & Vivian on the negative end.
And speaking of relationships, there's Mario and Toadia's.
Now, Toadia is an idiot and by no means a saint. But at the same time, she's also somewhat of a victim in this situation.
Her conduct makes it very clear that she hates people who pretend to be Luigi. Yet the game makes her fall for the kind of person she detests, turn against the one she admires, and treats this as a good thing.
Whatever she and Mario have going on isn't cute. It's creepy as all heck. It also takes this game's running gag of every girl having the hots for Mario to its worst possible conclusion.
By the by, what is the reward for completing this sidequest?
An item which restores 5 HP and 15 FP.
Which at this point in the game is... uh...
It's such a shame too. This sidequest could have easily been a pretty good one if they just had Mario do something nice for his brother by telling Luigi about his fangirl and let Toadia meet her actual idol.
The reward wouldn't even need to be changed, since you can't convince me that if someone gave Luigi a cake, he wouldn't willingly share some of it with Mario.
Instead, we got an absolute mess where I can't think of a sensible Watsonian motive for Mario's actions other than that he enjoys hurting Luigi.
Also...
Just who is this sidequest for??
It's not for fans of Luigi, since they hate all the overused jokes where he's hated by everyone and made to suffer despite having done nothing wrong.
It's not for fans of Mario, since they don't enjoy seeing him actually being written as an abusive older brother to Luigi. As a moral coward who would rather see his little brother be driven to tears than admidt he did something wrong, and doesn't regret those actions in the slightest. As a creep who can't permit the existence of even one female who loves his brother, but not him.
It's not for the Mario hating contrations, since the game expects the player to be on Mario's side and outright rewards him for being a bad brother.
It's not for fans of the Toads, since it's yet another instance of their only personality trait being hyping up Mario while belittling Luigi for no good reason.
It's not for the old Paper Mario fans, given how it completey bastardises the themes of Chapter 4, widely considered to have some of the best writing in this game.
It's not for parents, since they wouldn't appreciate video games telling their kids it's okay to lie and steal from their siblings.
There's only 3 nice things I have to say about this sidequest:
It doesn't have much in the way of gameplay requirements. So if you're going for 100%, this trouble is quick to clear by just mashing through the text.
It's an easy way to get the recipe for the Choco Cake added to the recipe list, if you somehow haven't done that already. Note that this only applies to the remake.
For how awfully Mario was written here, this sidequest did not cause the bad "Mario is a sociopath" takes... since nobody actually did this game's sidequests prior to the remake. Because you just know that people like Game Theory would have been all over this had they known it existed.
I could go on, but I think I've said enough. So I'll just leave this post off with this.
This sidequest is the main reason why I refuse to 100% this game. Seriously, Intelligent Systems were just fucking dicks here. I love TTYD, but I do have my gripes about how Luigi is treated throughout the Paper Mario games. Intelligent Systems just really seem to hate Luigi (and Bowser) for some reason (which could explain the awful writing of Paper Jam as well). Not to mention Mario being apathetic towards Luigi is just 100% out of character for him (though in Mario’s defense, it’s possible that he probably just didn’t know what to say in that moment and he had no idea that Luigi would actually show up). In the Mario & Luigi games, Mario literally stands up for Luigi when other characters pick on him and would never actively encourage anyone to pick on Luigi. Yeah, this was just flat out bad writing for the sake of an annoying and unfunny jab at Luigi’s expense.
The notion of Mario being an abusive brother to Luigi mostly comes from the awful way he’s written in the Paper Mario series. In the pretty much every other form of the franchise, Mario NEVER acts this apathetic towards him.

The Beast Within
They hadn’t talked about what happened, not a word. It’s not like they were avoiding it or anything. They simply had more important things to do… They needed to get a sample of the chemicals that altered Beast Boy and Adonis, not question why they thought nothing of their friend’s complete change in personality. They had to develop an antidote to the chemicals, not discuss how they accused their teammate of assaulting Raven. Adonis needed to be put in jail. They couldn’t contemplate how they truly believed Beast Boy could do such things. All that remained now was to wait for Beast Boy to regain consciousness. They just needed to wait… in silence… in painful, agonizing silence… … It was too much. Starfire was the first to break. “How could we have believed Beast Boy to do such things?! He is our friend! He would never treat us so cruelly!” The Tamaranean paced around in frustration. “He is silly and kind and offers us the tofu even when we do not want it!” “Star, calm down,” Robin held his hands up to placate her. “There’s no way we could have known that the chemicals would change his behavior like that.” “But there is a way! It was not long ago that chemicals changed you!” Her anger soon fizzled away into sadness. “When you treated us cruelly, we knew something was wrong. We did what we could to help you and figure out what was wrong. Why did we not do the same for Beast Boy?” “That was different, Star,” Cyborg argued. “Robin was seeing and feeling things that weren’t there. Beast Boy was just being a jerk.” “We were also the jerks,” Starfire hung her head. “We weren’t jerks,” Robin placed a hand on her shoulder. “We had every right to be mad at him, chemicals or not.” “That does not excuse us not trying to help him. He is our friend. We should have been worried.” “Don’t beat yourself up,” Cyborg attempted to comfort her. “It won’t help anything.” “Cyborg is right,” Raven began. “Wallowing in the past accomplishes nothing. If you feel something should be done, then do it.” The other three Titans looked at each other and nodded. “Well, apologizing is the obvious route, but maybe we could do a little extra,” Robin suggested. “Oh, yes!” Starfire bounced up and down excitedly. “Let us make tomorrow the day of Beast Boy! That will surely fill Beast Boy with the feelings of joy!” As the three Titans went over how they could show Beast Boy they cared, Raven silently made her way out of the room and to the medical bay. She was feeling better now and could help him heal a bit faster. Upon reaching the med bay, however, all the beds were empty. He must have regained consciousness and hid away, she thought. She couldn’t blame him. After everything that happened, he must feel horrible, both physically and emotionally. Maybe she could help. Following a hunch, she slipped past the trio once more and made her way outside the Tower, spotting the changeling staring into the water.
This is how "The Beast Within" episode SHOULD have ended. Beast Boy seriously deserves more love than what he got in the actual show.

One of my favorite video games of all time! No joke!
Mini Fanfic #570: Cuddle Celebration (Super Smash Bros Ultimate)
Samus: (Chuckles Lightly while Cuddling Alongside with Luigi and Daisy Under a Blanket) No way. Did that seriously happened?
Luigi: (Chuckles Lightly as Well) Yeah. You should've seen Daisy out there! She was able to beat Death without even trying!
Samus: I gotta say, princess, I really didn't think you had it in ya to face a literal reaper one with only Holy Water and a Golf Club. You already made proud.
Daisy: (Smiles Sheepishly and Proudly) What can I say, Sammy? You gotta do what you gotta do to let 'em know no to mess with your man, ya know?
Luigi: (Smiles Softly at Daisy) I can't thank you enough for all of this, Daisy. You really are my hero.
Daisy: (Smiles Softly While Hugging Luigi Lovingly) You don't need to thank me for all of that, sweetie~ I did all of that because I love you so much and so I get back at that bonehead for even laying his boney hands on you.
Luigi: Well, technically he killed me with a scythe.
Daisy: (Snuggles onto Luigi) ('Sigh') Scythe. Smcythe. Does it really even matter at this point?~
Luigi: (Chuckles Lightly) I guess not, dear~ (Gives Daisy a Small Kiss on the Forehead)
Samus: H-Hey, Luigi?
Luigi: (Turns to Samus) Hm? What is it, Samus-
Before he could complete finish his sentence, Luigi gets immediately pulled into a tight hug from Samus herself.
Samus: I'm so sorry.....
Luigi: (Very Confused by Samus' Sudden Embrace) Samus? What's wrong? W-Why are you apologizing?
Samus: For letting you go out to that stupid castle all alone.......For letting that bastard hurt you.......If neither of the Belmonts were there to help you, then.....('Sniff') (Tears Are Swelling up on her Eyes) Then........
Luigi: (Hugs Samus Back) Hey. I know how scary the situation was at the time, but that's all in the past now. I never blamed any of you guys for what happened to me that day. I promise you everything is going to be okay from here on out.
Samus: Luigi......
Daisy: (Joins in on the Hug) Luigi's right, Sammy. What's important now is that we all need to do whatever it takes to keep each other safe. (Tears Starts to Fell Down in her Eyes) ('Sniff') And just...('Sniff') Be glad and happy that.....('Sniff') Luigi is still here with us now....('Sniff') You know? ('Sniff')
Luigi: She's right, Samus. I am still here.....('Sniff') and.......and.....(Tears Falling Down from His Face As Well) ('Sniff') I'm going to do....('Sniff') my very best....('Sniff') to never let anything like that happened again! ('Sniff') I promise!
Daisy: (Snuggles onto Luigion her Side) Oh Sweetie...... (Gives Luigi a Big Kiss on the Cheek on her Side) ('Sniff') You don't need to promise us something like that....('Sniff')
Samus: (Snuggles onto Luigi on her Side) Yeah.....('Sniff') Cause we are going to do our damndest to look out for you from here on out. (Gives Luigi a Kiss on the Cheek on her Side) ('Sniff') Promise.
Luigi: (Smiles Softly as he Hugs Both Daisy and Samus a Little More Tightly and Lovely) I love you guys so much.....
Daisy: (Smiles Brightly) We love you too, Weegie~
Samus: (Smiles Softly) Yeah, bud. Always.
And with that, the trio begins to cry into each other's soft, warm embrace until eventually, they peacefully fell asleep with one another for the night.

Honestly, people who hate Subaru because of episode 18 don’t understand the whole meaning and message behind the episode. If you don’t read between the lines or read the web novel/light novel, it’s very easy to take this episode as Rem getting friendzoned by Subaru when it’s in fact the complete opposite. When Subaru professes his love for Emilia, he does in a way to let Rem know that the Subaru that she loves is back. Rem knew the entire time that Subaru loved Emilia and confessed her feelings for him anyway not to try to win him over for herself, but to get him out of his depressed state and bring back the Subaru that she loves. She actually wanted him to go after Emilia, which is why she turned down his proposal to run away with him. So in a sense, Subaru didn’t really reject Rem. He rejected his previous self. And at the end of the episode he addresses his love for her by resolving to be the person that she fell in love with and become the hero that she sees in him. Her unconditional love for him is what snapped him out of his despair and encouraged him to keep fighting on.
There’s also the fact that Subaru still wants Rem to be by his side even after he saves Emilia and tells Crusch that he already has a #1 and #2 in his heart (the second spot obviously being Rem), once again showing that Subaru does view Rem as more than just a friend.
Rem is easily the most important person in Subaru’s life next to Emilia and we can see just how emotionally attached he is to her throughout most of Arc 3. He breaks down and loses it when he sees her killed in his failed loops and not to mention that Rem was pretty much the only one he would react rational around in his failed loops as well.

Truly a sight to behold

they said it
they said ass in mario
How about Mario, for the headcanon thing?
THIS DIDNT GET BURIED IN MY ASK BOX WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. (I’m so sorry this is so horrendously late but I hope what I wrote makes up for it!!)
Sexuality Headcanon: I feel like Mario is pretty comfortably straight. He probably wouldn’t be adverse to experimentation though, just for the sake of discovering more about himself. The idea of love and sex wouldn’t really be a taboo for Mario, and I feel like he’s pretty open about discussing his wants and needs with his partner before acting on them. But of course there’s the active side of him too- the one that goes for what he wants when he wants it. It all depends on his mood. A multifaceted lover, if you will.
Gender Headcanon: Mario is most certainly male. He knows who he is and has no questions about it.
Ship: Obviously Mario/Peach. The balance they bring to each other is something I think the both need. Mario is very extroverted, and that outward personality helps to bring Peach out of her private, sheltered world and allows her to experience new things, where otherwise she may have been too shy (or protected by her keepers of the Mushroom Kingdom royalty) to try them on her own. Adversely, Peach’s demure personality helps to balance out Mario’s bravado, and helps to keep him out of his own head. The two of them together really make the perfect pair because they both know how to understand the other.Aside from Peach, I’ve seen people pair Mario with Rosalina, and while I can see how people could interpret them together, I personally don’t see that happening. Simply because to my knowledge, there’s not really much known about Rosalina’s relationships with the rest of the Mario characters. I can see other people’s reasoning, but for me, it’s a stretch. Also shoutout to red-man-of-mustache for making me ship myself and Mario together lol.
BROTP: The obvious answer here is Luigi, and for good reason. Apart from them being, y'know, actual brothers. Luigi is the sauce to Mario’s spaghetti. They are the perfect pair of brothers because they know exactly what sets the other one off. Mario, being the older of the two, always makes sure to include Luigi in everything because much like Peach, Luigi has a shy demeanor. He needs to be brought out of his shell a bit before he can truly flourish on his own. Luigi on the other hand is the more silent supporter; the one who makes sure that Mario knows he can’t always be the hero. He keeps Mario aware of his own humanity in an environment where people uphold him as a hero. Besides the actual brother, I can totally see Mario and Wario being the “best frenemies”. Because my thoughts on Wario and Waluigi are not that they are “villains”, but simply mischief makers, I don’t feel like there would be any real animosity between the two. Sure, they fight and bicker and piss each other off, but at the end of the day they do actually really like and respect one another, even if they would never outwardly admit it.
NOTP: I just cannot see Mario and Daisy being together. I’m not even entirely sure why. I feel like they can both be super headstrong, and while Peach and Luigi balance them out respectively, if they were ever a couple they would just clash way too much to make things work. Also I don’t ever see Mario getting it in with Bowser. No offense if that’s your thing but… yeah lol.
Random Headcanon: Mario has a hell of a lot of weight on his shoulders. He’s held on a pedestal of being the savior of the Mushroom Kingdom, and there have definitely been times where that that weighs way too heavy on him. His ability to be extremely outward and happy all the time can mask those brief moments, but when that heaviness starts to take over, he withdraws into himself and avoids contact with the people around him. Only Luigi and Peach are the ones able to see the subtle changes in his demeanor when it happens, and so they know when they have to reassure him that yes, he is good enough.
General Opinion: I FUCKING LOVE MARIO. He’s just such a cutiebutt sweetheart. He’s the person you could trust with pretty much anything. I think we should all strive to be more like Mario- be more willing to help others in the face of adversity, even if it means taking ourselves out of our comfort zones to do so.
I wonder if your take on his relationship with Wario and Waluigi was influenced by any discontinued live action youtube media………
It wasn’t, and I wish I knew what you were talking about.
I support this so much. Well, I honestly don’t have anything against Mario x Daisy and I can see the relationship working. Though I do agree that Peach is a much better match for Mario since she balances Mario out and is a great contrast to Mario’s more outgoing and cheerful personality whereas Peach is more subtle and reserved. And you nailed pretty much everything about else about Mario and explain pretty much while I love the character so much!
What if Mario and Luigi hug each other so much because, not only are they really affectionate, but because it reassures them of the other one’s safety?
I mean, the first time Mario and Luigi ever experienced being separated from each other was in Yoshi’s Island, when they were just tiny babies. Being that young, and torn apart from the one person who can give you so much comfort, was likely terrifying for them.
I’ll try not to repeat myself since I touched on this in a previous post, but it’s likely that the bros from then on suffer from separation anxiety. Luigi more so, because Mario had at least some reassurance from the Yoshis.
But Mario was the one so desperate to find him. It was his bond with his brother that the Yoshis picked up on, and realised there was more at stake. Mario could think of nothing else except to be with his brother. And he was practically a new born!
So from then on, the bros feel like they need to know the other is right there. Seeing each other just isn’t enough; physical touch is needed to reassure each other that they’re both ok. That they’re still together.
Omg yes! So much yes
Well why can't she be transgender? And who are you to say she could never be?
That’s like saying that Mario and Link are transgender. There’s no evidence that she’s ever been so.
