If you had to explain the gist of the artist, or their work, to a person who was blind, what would you do? (Jeffrey Gibson)

His works seem happy and bright at first, but there are somber words stitched on them. They are made of canvas-looking cloth, beads, and fuzzy tassels. They are hung from the ceiling and would probably swing around if you touch them. One sits on the ground with wood legs. It is covered in strips of cloth and comes up to a point at the top like a tepee.

How did the artist, or their work, make you feel? (Jeffery Gibson)

Curious. He uses all these bright colors and bold patterns, but puts somber text into them. It was hard to know what to feel when looking at the works. They seems so happy, but the words really make you wonder.

What did this artist make you think about? (Jeffery Gibson)

Since quite a few of his works are colorful punching bags, I couldn’t help but think of exercising. You could put them in a really up beat gym like Planet Fitness.

If you had to explain the gist of the artist, or their work, to a person who was blind, what would you do? (Subodh Gupta)

He is using smooth, steel pots to create a large tree. The branches sprawl out like the fingers on your hand and are covered in pots and other kitchen smooth utensils. The work seems cold and out of place; it looks very ridged among the lush plants and stone houses.

How did this artist, or their work, make you feel?

I really love the silver tree. I feel like it ties nature in with humanity very well. At first I was surprised and put aback about the fact that he was using a whole bunch of pots, but it’s really rather interesting. I would have never though of using an object that would normally belong in a kitchen as material for an art project.

What did this artist make you think about? (Subodh Gupta)

All of the shiny chrome colors made me think of that future episode of Sponge Bob.

If you had to explain the gist of the artist, or their work, to a person who was blind, what would you do? (Alex Da Corte)

Imagine the warm, playful feeling of being a kid. Abstract and bright, but mixed with a sense of belonging. Everything has its place. Much of the space is filled with simple shapes, like squares, rectangles, and circles, but there is the occasional oddity, like ceramic cats, potted plants, plastic dolls. Despite some of the random objects, everything feels smooth and structured.  *On a side note, Corte does like to use scents and sounds in his works, which may help a blind person capture some of the feelings behind his works.

How did this artist, or their work, make you feel? (Alex Da Corta)

His works give you an energized feeling because of all the pops of color, but their is also a sense of unity. Despite all of the fun energy, there isn’t any chaos. Everything seems to have a place. On the gallery’s website and in the magazine, he talks about how he wants to give meaning and life to objects that people might not understand or like. He finds a lot of his objects from flea markets and dollar stores. He also talks about how the objects in his works can actually be stand ins for people, which I thought was an interesting way of looking at his art. There are a couple of cat statues in one of the pictures posted, and I just think it’s funny that they could be stand ins for people.

What did this art make you think about? (Alex Da Corte) I loved how upbeat and colorful his works are. They kind of reminded me of fun houses that you would see at a carnival.

Of the themes addressed in the sculpture magazine, which one resonated with you the most? Why?

There was a section titled “Back to Nature?” that I thought was rather interesting. The writer compared the necessity of art on society to the sun on the natural world. I thought that was a bit extreme, but I like combining nature with art. I think nature gives a sense of life to a piece. I feel I am often inspired by nature and learning about environmental artists was very interesting.
