Rocky was super excited to be at the AGM of BirdLife South Africa this afternoon! He was really happy that so much fuss was made about the African Black Oystercatcher being the #BOTY2018! #Flock2018 #WhereIsRocky #RoamingRocky #ShareTheShores

Rocky has just entered West Coast National Park! He is super excited to be going to #LAB2018 and #Flock2018 - #WhereIsRocky #BOTY2018 #ShareTheShores (at West Coast National Park)
Rocky is very excited to have just landed in Cape Town! Tomorrow he heads up to Langebaan for the Learn About Birds conference and Flock - hosted by @birdlife_sa and the Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of Ornithology. So looking forward to spreading the word about #ShareTheShores for @nvtrust. #WhereIsRocky #BOTY2018 (at Cape Town International Airport)
Rocky the Oystercatcher took a trip with me this weekend. We flew from George to Durban, then rented a car to Howick, where I was privileged to have been asked to do the talk at the AGM of BirdLife KZN Midlands, a branch of @birdlife_sa I have been a member of since the early 2000's and which I was chairman of from 2003-2004. I gave a presentation of my past and present research and conservation work in the Seychelles, and it was great to meet up with so many old friends! #ShareTheShores #BOTY2018 #WhereIsRocky #RoamingRocky #BLSA
Great spot for a 7:30 meeting yesterday, with @gwen_penry and @roguesally to plan a monitoring project for the beach and Estuary over season, in partnership with @birdlife_sa (at Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape)
A lovely sighting of Bottlenosed Dolphins at Goukamma this afternoon!
A bug thanks to Rozanne for my Knysna Rises nectar feeder! It went up this morning and the birds love it! (at Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape)
The 2018 bird of the year - nine of them! African Black Oystercatchers are magnificent!
I feel incredibly humbled to have received this amazing owl award from BirdLife South Africa today. As one of the premier conservation organizations in Africa, with a fantastic global reputation, it has always been my favorite NPO apart from NVT, and I am proud to have been associated with them in various ways over the last 17 years. To be honored with an award by them for my research and conservation work must rank as a clear career and personal highlight for me. I must acknowledge the incredible team I currently work with, the high caliber of postgraduate students and interns I have worked with over the years, and my supportive family - this award is thanks to all of you!
Did you know you can accurately predict what sugar is in the nectar of plants just by watching starlings? Starlings and other members of their family lack the enzyme sucrase, so cannot digest the dissacharide sugar sucrose (table sugar). So when you see them feeding on nectar like this one, you know for sure the nectar has a mix of the two monosaccharides glucose and fructose! #research #conservation #pollinationecology #sugar #starling #birdsrock

Was fantastic spending 5 days in Zululand. We netted 118 birds of 32 different species, submitted 4 full protocol and 4 incidental atlas cards, and spent some quality family time together! I also managed to get some nice pics, like this one of a Trumpeter Hornbill.
We stopped in at the Mangroves in Mtunzini this morning to see if we could add Mangrove Kingfisher to my son's growing bird list. Got cracking views!
Another interesting eye story. Both these birds are young Somber Greenbuls, but notice the bottom one had already changed iris color to that of the adult, a nice striking white. Anyone know the rough age this change takes place? (at Malala Lodge)
The Black-bellied Starling has an incredible trick up its sleeve... It changes eye color as its moods change! Normally a striking yellow, it can bring out this incredible red fringe when agitated or angry. Watching it change before your eyes can be quite freaky if you are not expecting it! #bird #ornithology #conservation #research #research (at Malala Lodge)
A few bird pics I managed to snap today. Loved being able to relax and use my camera to its full capabilities for a change! (at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park)
Some pics of the non-avian kind from a day at Hluhluwe today. Really enjoyed being in bushveld for a day! (at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park)
