A glimpse into the AMA Vegas Conference

Hey everyone, I’m Jenny from the UCR AMA chapter and I just wanted to give you all a little glimpse of what the UNLV conference in Las Vegas was like! On February 6th, 2015 the UCR’s AMA Chapter attended UNLV’s annual Marketing Conference. At the conference the board members and members were able to network with many other aspiring marketers and we got to listen to inspiring guest speakers and alumni. We were able to meet three inspiring guest speakers who spoke about their marketing endeavors all across the nation. One of the guest speakers we had the honor of listening to was named Kim Do. She is a young entrepreneur who has been the CEO of at least 4 companies, many of which she’s started herself — I mean talk about inspiring. Have you heard of AnimeRamen in Las Vegas? Well, she was one of the founding owners of the restaurant. Did I mention that she’s only 25? 

Along side with listening to keynote speakers we were also given the opportunity to attend an etiquette dessert, tea party. We were served delicately small squares of pink champagne cake with an even smaller fork to eat it with. To top it off we also had a cup of green tea, perfect to cleanse our palates. But besides the treats, we learned proper etiquette rules — some of which included: 1. Standing until every member is present. 2. Passing the tea to the right. 3. Waiting for everyone to have their tea served and ready before having any. —(the same goes for eating) 4. If someone leaves, you must once again rise to greet their return. 

After the conference we all regrouped and discussed what we learned from the conference. Needless to say, the conversation was very extensive! We all went out to dinner at a very charming little Mediterranean restaurant after the conference ended — the food was wonderful! Overall, it was an undoubtedly a great trip that allowed everyone to learn and bond with each other. I can honestly say, after the trip I really felt closer to everyone in our organization!

Africa emergence on the global platform as a potential ecommerce giant

At a processing center outside of Portland, Oregon, Christine Wigham preps boxes of Brooks Brothers dress shoes and Macy’s handbags for shipment to Nigeria. She is one of 15 U.S. employees working for Mall for Africa, an e-commerce startup that sells American products to Nigeria’s growing middle- and upper-class consumers.

Founded by Nigerian-born brothers, Chris and Tope Folayan, in 2011, Mall for Africa racked up $17 million in sales in 2014, partnering with U.S. retailers like Barney’s, Bloomingdales, and Best Buy. They’re not the only e-commerce startups focused on Nigeria. Jumia and Konga also are trying to master the maiden market with digital platforms that could scale to Africa’s rising consumers. Collectively backed by over $300 million in VC funding, the venture that overcomes Nigeria’s business challenges and brings in big sales could create the continent’s first big tech headlines.
