âNot personally, no. But I know what you are.â
âAnd you donât like that, do you?â
âNo we do not know who the witch is. And Iâm not sure if weâll ever know, sadly.â He says, sarcasm laced in his voice as he continued to walk Markus away from the barrier.âNo, it doesnât kill us, but youâd wish it did, brother. Sheâs fine, just not healing very well, Iâm afraid. Now that youâre here, youâre stuck with us.â He teases with a light chuckle on his lips.
Markus furrowed his brow as Lucian spoke; the entire situation didnât make much sense, why would a witch do this for no reason? He shook his head slightly, though, his family a more pressing matter in his eyes. He glanced to Lucian, still worried about his sister, but he managed a smile at the older vampire, chuckling softly. âSad. And here I thought Iâd get a little peace and quiet coming back here.â He joked. He glanced up at his slightly-taller older brother at his side. âJust⊠make sure you donât go near it - I know you guys like to play risky games, but donât risk yourself for it, okay?â He spoke with a slightly worried tone; even though he knew Lucian didnât need (nor want) a pep talk, it made him feel better just to say it. Although it seemed that it wouldnât cause death for his family, he didnât want to see another single one of them hurt at all, much less with slowed healing.
Her being a little out of it was an understatement. Between renovating her own home, to what was going on with the border that the damn witch cast, right down to finding out some troubling news about her step brother,it was all stressing her out. Â "Honestly, part of me is here to mourn those who were killed here recently. The other part of me just likes how peaceful it is out here.â Taking a deep breath, she looked straight ahead of her for a moment before looking over at him again.
âKilled? What happened?â His eyebrows furrowed; he was curious, but he couldnât say he was surprised. Be away from Red Creek for a period of time, there is bound to be some strange and potentially deadly event that you miss. He glanced over, in the direction her vision took, before glancing upward at the sky: as dysfunctional as this place was, and no matter how many unfortunate memories, it was a comfort to be back in his hometown. He turned back to the girl. âI donât believe I met you before. My name is Markus. Itâs a pleasure.â He smiled gently, turning back to look at the view ahead of him.
âAre you kidding me? There is always a need for weapons.â
âIâm sorry, did I do something to offend you?â
âWeâre  working on that. It seems people can enter with little fan fair but upon leaving⊠well thatâs where it gets a little deadly.â Watching the emotions change on the younger mans face, the realization that she had in fact seen him before, in a photograph or in passing set in. Well this was a surprise, all of them under one town banner again. âYour sister is fine, will be fine. She pushed her way through and is on the other side being petulant and cranky but thatâs also not out of the ordinary for her. She does not wish to be brought back over at this time so I suggest you leave her be.â
The vampire inwardly groaned to himself - of course Callista would risk herself for something like that and, for whatever reason, not want to return to the inside. âIs she at least healing?â He asked, running a hand through his hair subconsciously - another thought came to his mind. His voice was soft, glancing at the border as he felt an odd energy radiating from it. âWhy was she able to make it through, while otherâs canât?â
âHeâs compelled until I need him.â Lyra spoke openly as she appeared beside her younger brother, her cold gaze staying focused on the wolf who couldnât move an inch âIn case you havenât heard, thereâs a bloody magical barrier around the town, making any supernatural creature who crosses it drop dead â heâs waiting until his lovely and very pregnant fiance showâs up so he can push her into it.â all because the woman had dropped her coffee on Lyraâs handbag âDoing her a favor really; the first transition back will kill her so two birds one stone. Did that answer all your questions, brother?âÂ
He knew the voice instantly, not even needing to look to the side to know exactly who spoke. As happy as he was to hear his sisterâs familiar voice, the words she spoke turned his eyes a bit grim. He wasnât going to bother asking what the wolf or his ill-fated wife did to deserve it - it honestly didnât matter when it came to the majority of his siblings. Finally, he turned to face her, taking her in for a moment before speaking in a soft tone. âNot at all... but itâll do for now.â He looked back to the compelled creature for a moment, before turning back to her. âArenât you worried about accidentally crossing that line yourself, being so close?â He wasnât incredibly worried in the tone of his question, but rather muted: he knew that, once Lyra set her sights on something, she wouldnât stop until it was completed. And it was a dumb question in itself; of course she wouldnât trip across - none of them did something as mundane and clumsy as trip - but it was all he could say. Letting the matter go momentarily, he turned to older sister, a small smile on his lips, despite himself. âItâs good to see you again, Lyra. Hope you havenât gotten yourself into too much trouble.â
âNo we do not know who the witch is. Now that youâre here, youâre stuck with us.â He teases with a light chuckle on his lips.

âTake another step and Iâll chop your damn head off.â
âHey, hey, I didnât mean to startle you, Iâm sorry about that. No need for weapons, right?â
Turning away from the barrier, Catherine stepped back from it and slipped her hands back into her pockets as she moved towards the younger man, a small smile on her face. She could hear from his equal lack of heartbeat that he was like her and he did seem vaguely familiar, it would come to her. âThere is some sort of.. energy running through it. Anyone like us, of any kind, will meet with grave results if they try and cross it⊠Aside from Callista of course who is laying on the other side and being a right pain about it but that was entirely self inflicted.â
Markus kept his eyes on the other vampire, letting out a small smile, but not moving from his spot. He listened with curiosity and confusion, questions suddenly hitting him like bricks as she spoke. âAn energy... what caused it? I was able to enter town without any trouble,â He spoke softly, looking towards the barrier for a brief moment, before returning his light blue eyes to her. His curiosity subsided momentarily, quickly replaced with thoughts of his sister. âCallista...? Is she okay?" He didnât even know Callista was here a moment ago, but now he found himself worrying. âHow did she make it through?â
What had started off as a simple walk to get out of her hotel room, soon had turned into a walk to the edge of town. Which wasnât what she was expecting. Could she cross the border without  getting hurt? Of course. She was still human to say the least. At least she could do that. Come and go as she pleased. Maybe she was drawn to the edge just so she could step over the border. Maybe that had been it. But who knew at this point. Hearing a voice though, she was looked over at the male. âYeah, everything is fine. Just took a detour on my walk. And I ended up here somehow.â
The Carmikael observed the girl, an intriguing look upon her face - she was deep in thought about something. He approached slowly, letting out a gentle smile to ensure to the human that his presence was completely benevolent in nature. âYou looked a little out of it. Any particular reason you ended up here?â He spoke quietly, stopping a few steps from her. He looked out in the direction she had been, taking in a small gust of wind in the air.Â
Cassius was a family man despite what others, some siblings included, thought about him. He loved each and every one of his siblings in his own way, Noah being the exception to that fact and sure, he showed pure favoritism towards specific ones considering they were very much like him, but his happiness and excitement, even if barely shown, for Markus coming back was genuine. The elder of the two just had to roll his eyes at his younger brother upon hearing his words, Cassius knowing full well he technically shouldnât and yet, he always seemed to without any hesitation or remorse. âItâs not like anyone can stop me.â he added smugly, a smirk upon his face all the while considering the presence of his younger brother. His question had him shaking his head, turning his attention back to the man whoâs name he didnât much care for, using the stick to push him another inch or two closer. âNo, the witch canât be tracedâ Callista is fine, healing slowly. If you want something from a nearby town, I suggest seeking her out and asking. This barrier,â the one in which the stick was now pointed at instead of the man. âDoesnât kill us or keep us from runningâ if anything is to happen, weâre all more than safe.â And that, truly, was all Cassius cared about; his family continuing to rule and do as they please for many more centuries to come. âAnd did you just miss the family or are you back for some other reason? âIâve been great, thereâs never anything bad to report when it comes to me.âÂ
Markus raised his eyebrows at Cassiusâ words, partly in disapproval but mostly in agreement - no one could make the eldest Carmikael do anything - that was a fact proven many, many times over. He sighed slightly as Cassius began the game again, pushing the man further and further toward that line. He was about to interrupt, but his brotherâs words of Callista distracted him; he let out an inaudible breath of relief. Despite how incredibly different some of his siblings were from him, he wished anything but harm upon them. His quietly effervescent curiosity spiked again, and he looked to Cassius. âWait, so, it kills anyone other than us? Including other vampires?â His voice was quiet but thoughtful. He smiled, nodding. âI beg to differ,â He teased, glancing at the man who was continuing toward the line. He walked forward - careful not to step too far toward the barrier - and placed a hand upon the manâs shoulder, stopping him. âIs there any real purpose to this, brother?â His voice wasnât upset or angry, just familiar and slightly parental, unable to wipe a tiny, stern grin off his features. He was far too mellow in this moment to force his brother to stop, but that didnât mean he couldnât try to convince him.
Lucian had been tense since the fight between him and Lyra. Though he doesnât say much on the matter anymore, since it was clearly effecting the family, he was holding it in his back. So when his younger brother started to ask questions, an arm went around his shoulderâs, as he lead his brother away from it. âA witch trapped us inside here. Though Callista has proven that it doesnât kill us, just well, stopâs us from moving anywhere really. I advice you not to do what she did, alright?â
Although he was glad to feel the tension drop, Markus couldnât help but feel a small load of confusion drop onto him instead as his brother led him away from that very spot. That only grew, as his question was answered by a statement which spurred on many more. âA witch? Does anyone know who?â He asked, glancing at his brother before looking back to the spot behind them. âIt doesnât kill us - as in just our family? Is Callista okay?â His questions were quiet but quick, looking to the older vampire again.
Catherine hummed to herself quietly as she studied the invisible barrier, her hands in her coat pockets and eyes turned up at what she thought was a trick of light. Pausing in the middle of reaching out to touch the barrier, Catherine glanced over at whomever was speaking to her and smirked. âPerhaps but thereâs something a little extra to it this time around and Iâm not entirely sure what it is..âÂ
He tilted his head just slightly, observing her for less than a moment. No heartbeat, heightened reflexes, and that familiar energy - vampire. She was familiar - quickly, a switch flipped in his head. She served on the counsel beneath his brother. He smiled gently, looking at the spot that she had been focused on. âWhat âextraâ about it?â He asked curiously. He observed her outstretched arm now, confusion only growing. Although, if youâre away from this town for any period of time, your bound to have missed one or two odd things.Â
Kennedy was quick to wave off his apology, it being not needed in the slightestâ she did appreciate how polite he was, however. âNo, no, itâs fine. You just move like a cute little blonde cat, is all. Kitten. â-Oh yeah, right. Well, Iâm not glued to it so you donât have to try and save me, just lost in thought.â And then she was giving him a polite smile, now taking a small step back from the spot she had been standing in to further show she wasnât stuck or anything. âJust get into town?â
Markus smiled at her words, genuinely amused - he had heard many words used to describe him in his lifetime, but this one was definitely a first. He nodded at her, smile still in place. âI figured you werenât stuck, just being a friendly samaritan,â he teased, moving to the side slightly. âYeah, I just got back. Iâm from here, but Iâve been travelling.â He said, taking another glance around his surroundings before turning back to her - he took a quick moment to study her, but she wasnât familiar to him. âAre you from around here?â
âYeah, itâs fine. Itâs just seems different with the border and all. I donât know exactly how to describe it, but it seems smaller.â
Markusâ head tilted slightly, curiosity painting his features. Of course, being gone from Red Creek for long enough, there was bound to be some odd happening in the town when he returned. âWhat happened to the border?â
If you looked into the heart of your enemy, what do you think you would find that is different from what is in your own heart?
Probably a lack of loyalty to anyone or anything. Pure enjoyment of senseless and pointless cruelty. Bliss in their ignorance.
It wasnât often that Lucian heard Markusâ voice. Though honestly, Lucian didnât know what to make of his family these days. Who hated who, and for what reason.âJust taking in the power brother. Iâm sure you could feel it, no?â
Markus stepped next to his older brother, feeling the slight tension radiating off him. Markus couldnât blame him - the younger vampire had been gone for quite a while, and something was off here, he could feel it. He smiled slightly, indicating good will. He was thrilled to see he had siblings already back in town - no matter how different any one of them were from him, he still missed each one more with every passing day. He nodded at Lucianâs words, glancing down. Something was radiating around the town, he felt it the moment he stepped inside its walls. âWhatâs going on, Lucian? Did something happen?â
