I've been thinking about lying in bed for the entire weekend...
And I have come to the conclusion that it is a great idea.
the conclusion that it is a great idea.
Oh no you don't. Our potions essay is due Monday first and I haven't even started. I'll drag you out of bed if I have to.
Why do you want to stay in bed, anyway? Is something wrong?
Anybody fancy some Firewhiskey?
I'm always up for free Firewhisky...
Cigarettes: Marlene || Dorcas
Dorcas was slouched over her Ancient Runes textbook in the Gryffindor Common Room, half asleep. She felt her consciousness slowly but surely ebbing away but she was determined to finish reading the seemingly interminable chapter she was currently on. A mug of tepid, watery tea sat next to the leather-bound textbook. She sluggishly picked up the mug, her slender fingers almost instantly curled around the mug and sipped it. Then she stood up and padded over to one of the windows next to the fireplace.
The sun's rays had long since disappeared over the horizon and had been replaced by myriad stars, which dotted the inky canopy. Dorcas gazed across the obfuscous grounds, her gaze drifted over to the murky Black Lake. It certainly lived up to its name on that night. She noted that a lone figure sat by the body of water and she wondered who on Earth would be out at that time of night and do they realize how cold it is? A thought struck her mind. Maybe it was Marlene. Marlene had been acting pretty unusual for the past few days, she remembered that she saw Marlene slipping up to her dorm several times between classes and acting ever so slightly inebriated. She asked herself if it was a good idea to check on this person, but what if they were an extremely pissed off Slytherin that would hex her into next week if she bothered them? That was one thing she certainly didn't want to bump into. She decided that if it wasn't Marlene, she'd make up an excuse as to why she was down at the lake so late at night.
After making her way through the dimly lit corridors and the courtyard, a steep hill and the Black Lake faced Dorcas. She spotted the figure still sitting next to the lake. At that moment, she considered turning back to the warmth of the Common Room, but the person continued to intrigue her. She walked down the damp hill with care, her fluffy slippers sliding every so often, which caused the blonde's heart to leap into her mouth. Once down the hill and closer to the mysterious figure, she realized that it was indeed Marlene McKinnon.
"Marls? Are you okay? Come inside, it's so cold out here..." she trailed off, looking down at her friend with concern. Her skin crawled with goosebumps and she hoped that Marlene would follow her back to the castle.
In her currently intoxicated state, Marlene didn't hear Dorcas approach, so when her friend spoke, Marlene jumped a distance of what felt like a metre in the air. Recognising her friend's voice, she relaxed again, but didn't turn around. She didn't want Dorcas to see her like this. I take it back, she thought. I take it all back. Being alone is fine. I like being alone. And I don't want to talk to anyone. About my feelings, or about anything else. Just make her go away... Marlene sighed. Marlene hated being mean to her friends, and especially to Doe. For the first few years of school, Marlene barely even knew Dorcas existed. She was so quiet and gentle and just the exact opposite of Marlene. Marlene had no patience with the quiet, timid girl, so she barely even acknowledged her existence. Of course, eventually Marlene got to know her, and realised how sweet and funny and smart and just nice Dorcas was, and now she definitely counted her as one of her closest friends. She's always regretted how horrible she was to her when she was younger, but she's never known how to apologise to her. But she definitely knew what she was about to say definitely wasn't the right way to go about it.
"Just go away, Doe." She said harshly, still not turning around. "Leave me alone." She took another drag of her cigarette. She hated herself right now for being so nasty, but she couldn't really think of a better way to make the blonde girl leave her alone in her current state. She honestly didn't know what was wrong with her. All she knew was that she was being weak, and weak was something that Marlene McKinnon never was. She had to make Dorcas leave before she spotted the dried tears that lined Marlene's cheeks. She hadn't heard her retreated footsteps yet, so she added in a cold voice, "I don't want you here," and breathed out the cigarette smoke she'd just inhaled.
Exposing Secrets: Marlene || Amelia
Marlene looked at Amelia like she was crazy. “What are you doing? Are you singing?” She felt what was an almost horrified expression form on her face, but she couldn’t help it. She didn’t think she’d ever heard Amelia sing. Ever. The only time she might almost sing was at Quidditch matches they weren’t playing in, or occasionally when they sang the school song at the beginning of the year, but even then she sang so quietly Marlene usually couldn’t hear her. In fact, she was the one who always hissed at Marlene to shut up when Marlene started singing during her ‘study time’, so she thought it was actually a bit hypocritical for Amelia to start singing while Marlene was trying to give her some advice. At least when Marlene sang, she wasn’t blatantly ignoring what Amelia was saying, since she only ever sang when she was really bored.
“Okay, so I don’t even want to know what that was about…” she gave Amelia one last you’re-crazy look before changing the subject. She made an attempt to give Amelia an apologetic smile, but it turned out more like half a grimace. “I’m sorry. I know you don’t like to talk about it. But sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind, you know?” Marlene sighed and shook her head. “God, that sounded lame even to me…” She leaned back in her seat and half-closed her eyes, trying to think of a way to convince Amelia that she was right. Sometimes the stubbornness of her fellow Gryffindors really annoyed her. “Okay, yeah, you’re right. I don’t know him. But I don’t have to know him. And I don’t care about how nice he could be, bottom-line is, he’s a bad guy. I’m sorry, but a guy that sketchy can’t be nice. It’s like, a total contradiction. Like, ‘here, let me help you with your books before I steal your bag!’”
“Why are you being so defensive?” Marlene asked after a moment’s pause. “You don’t know him any better than I do, you have no reason to care.” Something told her Amelia wasn’t listening again, and she inspected her face closely. Her eyes had wandered in the direction that Caleb had gone, and while her face was closely guarded, her eyes held some kind of desperate longing that shocked Marlene. She didn’t think she’d ever looked like that before. And suddenly, it all clicked into place. “Because you do know him better,” she said softly - not a mean kind of soft, but the way you might talk when you’ve finally solved a really hard question in arithmancy. “You’ve been dealing with him. You’re probably best buds now, aren’t you? And you’ve probably been doing more than just dealing with him,” she added in the same calm voice. “You’ve probably been doing drugs with him too, haven’t you? That’s why you’re going on with all the ‘don’t judge him cos he’s a stoner’ crap. Because he’s turning you into one too.” Marlene looked at Amelia’s face, waiting to see what her reaction will be.
Amelia rolled her eyes “There is a difference between singing and humming” She snorted a laugh and went back to glaring at the girl. Amelia didn’t care what Marlene though of her doing that, it was something that made her happy and something she would continue to do.
The blonde shifted on her feet as Marlene continued to talk about the exact thing she was told not to do. She looked at the ground and let out a sigh. Both of them being stubborn, Amelia wondered how they didn’t ever rip each other apart. When Marlene started talking about Caleb once more, she looked up, trying to hide the small smile on her lips “You know, that’s really judgemental..he helps with books” The last part of the sentence was whispered and she chewed her lower lip. Amelia hated how Marlene often judged people before she got to know them, she always had an opinion and it was often wrong. Amelia wondered briefly what she could do to change that.
Hearing Marlene accuse her of doing drugs, Amelia froze up and automatically looked away from her. “I-ah..” Amelia didn’t know what to say. All the things she said were true. She couldn’t deny what her friend was saying, apart from the best friends part, that wasn’t true. Amelia swallowed and refused to look at Marlene, starting to walk away from her.
Marlene frowned. Sure, she'd already worked out that Amelia was doing drugs, but hearing her admit it - or rather, hearing her not being able to deny it, which was essentially the same thing - well, that was still a shock. She took a deep breath and counted to ten to try and calm herself down - but she only got to three before she thought, fuck this. She stood up and almost yelled, "what the fuck, Amelia?" as she saw the blonde start to walk away, she reached out and grabbed her arm, turning her back around to face her. "Don't walk away from me! You can't drop a bomb like that and then just scamper!"
Marlene let go of her arm. "Shit." she said. She knew she was being too harsh, but she couldn't help it. She'd never been able to control her anger. She took a few more deep breaths, and closed her eyes, her hands balling up into fists at her sides. Nope. Still not working. She opened them again. "Why the hell would you do drugs, Melia? Why would you even consider that? I just don't..." she shook her head, trailing off. She honestly didn't know what to even say.
Cigarettes: Marlene || Open
It was a cold night out by the lake, and the only source of warmth was the steadily burning cigarette Marlene McKinnon was smoking. She was sitting on a rock, her heels sitting a few metres away and her stocking-ed feet dangling in the cold water. But Marlene didn't feel the cold. She'd gone through almost her whole stash of Firewhisky in the past week, and she'd just finished one of her last bottles before she snuck down from her dorm. Lately, she'd been either starting every day tipsy, or sneaking up to her room in between classes for a quick fix. Drinking helped numb her feelings, and at the moment she was just too confused to make it through a whole day sober.
Marlene wasn't happy. She'd really screwed it up, and not just for herself this time. She was fighting with Amelia - again - and the whole heart-to-heart she'd had with Sirius on the night of the party had really confused her, so she'd been avoiding him too. No, she corrected herself. I'm not just confused. I'm ashamed too. It wasn't just the confusion of seeing such a different, sincere side of Sirius, but she was also incredibly embarassed. She was ashamed of how she'd behaved that night - but not of how she'd behaved with Ted. All her life, Marlene had been building a metaphorical wall around herself, so her personality could get through, but all her feelings and emotions remained obscured behind it. She'd always been too scared to let people see what she was really like - a person who was just as insecure and vulnerable as everyone else. After all, it was far easier to pretend to be a heartless bitch than to actually admit she had feelings and appear weak.
Marlene raised the cigarette to her lips and took a drag. She didn't want to be alone tonight. She wished that she was in the dormitory with her friends, but Lily was on Prefect rounds, and she had no idea where Amelia was, and the rest of the girls were asleep. Besides, they were starting to reprimand her about the amount of cigarettes she'd been smoking, and she didn't want them to wake up and see her having yet another one. All she really wanted was someone to talk to, but at the moment, it felt like she had no one.
Exposing Secrets: Marlene || Amelia
As Amelia listened to what Marlene was saying, her brain started working over time. Her friend knew nothing about what she had been doing the past two weeks. She had in fact been doing drugs- from the exact same boy that had just walked away. The past two Friday nights he had done maraijuna and she liked the feelings it gave her. It made her eel confident and happy, something she hardly felt. It also made her eat more than she was used to but that could be seen as a benefit.
The blonde gave a small shrug and pushed her brows together. What did Marlene know? She didn’t know what he was really like, neither did Amelia but give it time and she would get to know the boy behind the drugs, get to know who the real caleb was. Her cheeks heated up once more as she remembered the kisses they had shared. Her eyes glazed over and a smile formed on her lips as she started humming the tune caleb ha sung to her the first time they hung out.
When she realised what she was doing Amelia stopped and looked over a Marlene, wrapping arms around her chest. Amelia realised she was talking about her anorexia, something g she still struggled with and something she didn’t like to talk about. The girl looked down at the ground “Please don’t talk about my hospitalisation” she whispered nod dug her nails into her forearms slightly. She hated how sensitive she was, she hated herself most of the time.
Amelia lifted her head back up and her eyes narrowed “Bottom line is you don’t know him so you can’t judge, he could be a very nice guy and you would never know because you never have him a chance” Amelia chewed her lower lip. She was getting too defensive about everything.
The blonde looked over at the greenhouses- she actually wanted to go to him. To go have a high with him when it wasn’t a Friday. Take the edge of what she was feeling towards Marlene
Marlene looked at Amelia like she was crazy. "What are you doing? Are you singing?" She felt what was an almost horrified expression form on her face, but she couldn't help it. She didn't think she'd ever heard Amelia sing. Ever. Marlene looked at Amelia's face, waiting to see what her reaction will be.
Party: Sirius||Marlene
Sirius smiled as Marlene agreed, allowing himself to be lead onto the dance floor. He hoped that it would make her feel at least a little bit better than she was. The Firewhiskey always made your emotions heightened, which definitely wasn’t good for Marlene. He was glad he had taken the drink away from her while he still had the chance. Despite Marlene’s upset at her rejection, Sirius was enjoying spending time with her. He knew she probably thought he was being overbearing, but it was better than leaving her on her own to get more drunk and do something stupid. His thoughts seemed to stop as arm arms wrapped around his neck, pulling them closer together. His body was a little slow on the uptake, but he placed his hands gently on the small of her back, holding her close as they swayed to the music, “I hope you don’t think I’m being overbearing at all,” Sirius informed her, “I just wanted to make sure you’d be alright, is all,” he knew he wouldn’t get much of a reaction out of her now, it was a wonder they were both still up to dancing with the amount of alcohol they had both had. Deciding to stay quiet, he leaned his cheek against the top of her head, closing his eyes with a slight smile as they swayed slowly.
Sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll experience moments in your life so perfect, you wish you could just take a photo of it, or preserve it as some people preserve flowers in the pages of books. Just somehow store up the moment so, when you're going through hard times, you could have the whole, pure, untainted memory to get you through. You could just open up the book and release the moment, every perfect feeling you felt at the time, and remember that while life might seem crap at the moment, it has its beautiful moments too. For Marlene, this was one of those moments. While the thought of Ted was enough to make her feel like someone was sticking daggers in her heart, and while she still had dried tears stained on her cheeks, at that moment, while being held in Sirius's arms, she honestly felt like everything was perfect. Marlene laid her head in the crook of Sirius's neck, so her nose and lips brushed against his skin when she moved. She breathed in his scent - aftershave, Firewhisky, and, for some reason, the always-lingering scent of wet dog. She heard him say something, but as soon as she heard it she forgot it. She couldn't concentrate on talking, so she just sighed contently and closed her eyes.
Party: Sirius||Marlene
“Well, don’t be sad!” Sirius tried to be positive, smiling at her to try and make her feel at least a little bit better. He squeezed her hand back, trying to be energetic despite the slight throb beginning to occur at the back of his head. ‘I knew I shouldn’t have drunk so much’ he thought to himself, dreading the state he would be in the next morning. “Rejection is shit, I would know,” Sirius reassured her, “but it gets better, seriously. Just try not to dwell on it, yeah? You’ll only put yourself in a worse mood. Life’s too short to spend time being sad.” He noticed her still half full bottle of Firewhiskey grasped in her other hand. He slowly took it away, “don’t want to be more hungover than is necessary in the morning, now do we?” his excuse so she wouldn’t argue. “Dance with me?” He asked suddenly, turning to her with an enthusiastic look on his face.
Marlene rested her head against the wall as she watched Sirius speak. For once, there wasn't a trace of sarcasm or any superior expression on her face. She was totally sincere as she listened to his advice. "Yeah," she agreed softly, but her sincere face soon turned angry as the bottle was taken out of her hand. "No! I need that!" She said angrily, reaching after it. "I don't think I can get through tonight otherwise," she added with a whisper, but then let her hand drop. Her enraged expression turned into one of defeat. She really wasn't in the mood to fight with him. "I suppose," she sighed grudgingly. Listening to the loud, fast, music, she was about to give him her best derisive, are-you-freaking-crazy look as he suggested a dance, but when the song ended and changed to something slower, she realised it might be what she needed to get through tonight without many more tears. "Okay," she said after a moment's hesitation, and she couldn't keep a smile off her face as she noticed his enthusiasm. She was so grateful to him for doing this. He could be off dancing and flirting with whatever girl he chose, but instead he chose to be Marlene's babysitter and counselor for the night. If he wanted to dance, she should at least do that for him. She lead him onto the dance floor and tentatively put her arms around his neck. She wouldn't have been so bold at any other party, but because of the alcohol fogging her brain and the self-pity still lodged in her heart, she barely thought about it twice. All she really wanted tonight was to be held.
Exposing Secrets: Marlene || Amelia
For Amelia it had been a long week, she had seen Caleb again to get her pills and she noticed they were slowly working. She hoped no one else did though- that was a secret she wished to keep. Having Marlene drag her out of the library, she sighed heavily, that was the one place she loved to be, no one actually was mean to her there.
Amelia didn’t notice Marlene talking to her, she was too ingorssed in her book to care about what she was saying. Studies always came first to her no matter what. Hearing Marlene mention Caleb she looked up and a small blush creeped on her cheeks as she watched him walk towards them.
Hearing Marlene’s insults, Amelia’s hands tightened on her book and she bit her lip hard only to release it when she remember Caleb had promised that he would find something else to do with them. The blonde closed her book quickly as the insults got worse and fought back tears. She didn’t realise until now how much it hurt for anyone to say mean things about the guy that supplied her drugs.
The girl took a deep shaky breath and blinked away the tears. She quickly looked at Caleb heading to the green houses, wishing she could chase after him, say sorry on her friends behalf but it wasn’t possbile, Marlene wouldn’t talk to her again and she couldn’t risk that.
“He’s not that bad” She muttered and she used her hand to clear the smoke in front of her from Marlene’s cigarette. She thought Marlene was in some ways just as bad as him- smoking and drinking, having the smell of it on her all the time. Amelia placed her book in her bag and stood up slowly, moving some hair from her face and looking down at her friend, a slight glare at her. She was being too defensive about the boy but she didn’t realise and if she did, she didn’t care.
Marlene looked at Amelia like she was slightly insane. Marlene mightn't be book smart, but she was people smart, which she thought was much more useful. She could tell when people were lying, her first impressions were almost always right, and she had a knack for reading into things and coming back with the right conclusion. "And how would you know?" She asked Amelia, narrowing her eyes as she searched the blonde girl's face, looking for her reaction. It didn't take her long to work it out. The way only the mention of his name would drag her out of her studies. The way his eyes lit up as he saw her, and the way she inhaled slightly as she saw him walking over to her. Thinking about it, Marlene even thought she remembered Amelia blushing. You could almost hear the little gears inside her head working as she put all the puzzle pieces together.
"You've been talking to him, haven't you?" She asked, looking at Amelia suspiciously. Of course, that wasn't what she'd worked out. Any idiot would be able to tell that. Marlene could tell that their relationship went a lot further than just talking, but she hoped they hadn't done anything that would make them more than friends yet. She hoped her friend wasn't beyond saving. "Amelia, listen to me. That boy isn't good enough for you. Sure, maybe if he had a shower once in a while and got a haircut he'd be pretty sexy, and maybe you're into that whole poor-boy thing, but he'd a stoner. I mean, ew. Cigarettes are totally sexy, and Firewhisky's fun at parties, but drugs are never cool. And do you know how everyone would react if they saw you hanging around? You've already got a rep for what you went through a few months ago, do you really want to be known as a druggo too, like he is? I mean, I know you'd never do drugs, but other people don't know that."
She sighed, hoping her speech would be enough to change her mind. Marlene didn't like playing the over-protective parent role, but she didn't want to see Amelia get hurt, and she didn't want her hanging out with the wrong crowd. "I'm sorry, Amelia. I can see you like Sketchy, but I think you should stay away from him. You already have awesome friends; ones who don't smoke pot and who aren't criminals. Please just stay away from him." She took one last drag from her cigarette, then extinguished it on the armrest of the bench, flicking it into the grass a few metres in front of them.
Exposing Secrets: Marlene || Amelia
Marlene took a drag out of her cigarette as she surveyed the students around her with a superior expression. As classes had finished and there wasn't any Quidditch practice on that afternoon, Marlene sat with her best friend in the spot they usually sat at when she managed to drag Amelia out of the library and outside in the fresh air and warm sunlight. Her legs were crossed, her red and gold tie was loose, her long dark hair was piled on top of her head in a messy bun, and her elbow rested on the armrest of the bench so her cigarette was right next to her mouth at all times. Amelia sat beside her, busily working away at - surprise, surprise - her homework, and Marlene had long ago given up trying to distract her from it - when she was working like this, Marlene sometimes wondered if Amelia would even notice if Marlene told her she was pregnant or something, or if she even noticed her being there at all.
As if to prove her point, Marlene sighed and said, "please, Amelia. You can do that homework tonight. I've grown bored of watching the mundane lives of the students at this school and would like to actually talk to you rather than just sit here like a very pretty statue." She turned her head and looked at Amelia, raising her eyebrow when she didn't reply. All Marlene could see was the top of Amelia's blonde head, her nose dangerously close to her parchment as she wrote so furiously Marlene thought she might actually tear the paper with her quill. Marlene rolled her eyes. "You're incredibly lame, you know that?" She said, but she knew Amelia wouldn't hear.
As Marlene brought her cigarette back to her lips, she noticed a tall, gangly boy wearing a Ravenclaw uniform walking past them. As he got closer, she recognised him - McGregor. "Oh, wonderful. I'd hold your breath, if I were you, Amelia. A druggo's about to walk past and stink us right out." Of course, the thin cloud of cigarette smoke surrounding Marlene would overpower any lingering smell on the boy, but Marlene was bored, and when she was bored she made nasty comments about people. She didn't know if the boy heard her, but she hoped he did. When he noticed them sitting there, his gaze passed right over Marlene and straight to Amelia, and he actually started walking towards them. Marlene quickly assumed an expression of disgust. "Uh, did we invite you to join us?" She called out as he approached them. "This bench is for normal people only. No addicts or people who wear the same cheap clothes every single day allowed. Scram." Her disgusted expression turned into a smirk as she watched Caleb walk in the other direction. "Thank Merlin," she said to Amelia. "One step closer and he would've got slime all over my shoes." She craned her neck to watch him disappear behind the closest greenhouse. "He's gone to the greenhouse. Typical. You know, I think he'd have a lot more Galleons to spend on a second pair of shoes and maybe even some shampoo or toothpaste if he didn't waste all his money on weed." She rolled her eyes as she took another drag of her cigarette.
