Another one inspired by the wonderful @incorrectcaryl. I loved this one from the moment I read it and could instantly see where it would fall in a scene.

We need the spin-off to give us such great one-liners.

Daryl, equally covered in dirt: i was also left unsupervised

Okay guys, I'm putting my positive pants back on. Seeing those pics hurt I'm not gonna lie but the more I stew on it the more I see it as a good thing.

Caryl's relationship has always been a big question. Everybody sees them in different ways and AK is actively pushing us all to see them in a very specific way. This episode is about a romance and it's a romance that ties directly to where Carol and Daryl are right now. Having this romance take place in the past as a fleeting flashback is probably the gentlest way to break it to us that Daryl has experience with romance.

This is good for us in a couple of ways.

1. It places Caryl directy into the romantic love category. It removes all the brother/sister mother/son theories. If we are supposed to compare his relationship with Leah in the past to his relationship with Carol now (which we are) then that's the status of their relationship in Canon. Romantic.

2. Daryl now knows or has some experience of romance. He has experienced love in some way that wasn't blind, needy love where he imprinted on the first person who ever showed him any affection like a baby duckling. He has a person out there in the world who he could, feasibly, choose to be with and he instead chose Carol. He chose her. And he will continue to choose her because now he knows that their connection is something special that can't be faked.

Since Leah disappeared Daryl has been showing us where his heart is over and over. The whole of S10 showed us that his priority was and is Carol. That hasn't changed. They still have a future, they'll still run away together and they still have each other no matter what. If anything, those romantically coded scenes in S10 make more sense now. Daryl knows what he wants, knows where he belongs and knows who he chose.

Yes he's going to yell at her. Maybe she doesn't deserve it but he's yelled at her before. In times when he's felt exposed and vulnerable. In times where she's gotten too close for him to hide those deep feelings he has. She doesn't know when to stop, he's right about that. She'll keep pushing him till he snaps and then they'll move on but they need it. They need to clear that air. They need to scream some home truths to the only person they know they can be brutally honest with without fear of losing them. Couples argue. They disagree. They fight. If they didn't then they would never survive the test of time and we already know that Caryl will survive.

Now, that doesn't mean I'm gonna like seeing it. It's gonna be tough to see those scenes. They look intimate and cosy, they look comfortable together but still, he ends up back where he's supposed to be so we shall power through, endure and move on. Caryl is coming and instead of Daryl being with Carol simply because he's known her the longest or she was kind to him when no-one else was or whatever other excuse people come up with, they will be together because they choose each other. Like they should and like we always hoped they would.

We still have a future.

Reasons why you are certain daryl loves carol?

I can never be one hundred percent certain of anything because 1) I don’t work on the show 2) It’s a show, and 3) shows don’t always follow logic. BUT! I trust my analytical skills enough to say the signs are there. 

Daryl will do anything to make Carol happy. Make her a friendship bracelet, give her a flower, torture a whisperer, look after her idiot kid, leave forever with another kid who reminds her too much of her idiot kid. 

He’s always checking in on her. “Hey, you good?”

He pays close attention to her.  “She’s claustrophobic.” “If I only knew what you told me, I wouldn’t know shit.” 

He puts her first. The cave. New Mexico. 

He listens to her, even when he’s seeing red. She stopped him from beating that savior to death. She convinced him to spare Noah. 

He worries about her and wants to protect her. Literally all of S10. 

He wants to be her person. “I’m the one you tell. Me.” 

He clams up when asked why he can’t be with another woman (even mainstream media outlets acknowledged this). 

And the biggest indicator for me that he not only loves her, but loves her romantically whether he knows it or not, is the way he talks to and about Ezekiel, aka his foil. There’s always tension between the two of them when they’re together. S9 episode 15 and 16. Season 10 episode 1, 5, and 11. Daryl acknowledges it in dialogue. “You and me never had much to talk about.” He calls him “the king” in front of Carol. He makes fun of him. “Does he snore all fancy too?”

The list goes on and on but I hope this will suffice for now.

Some season 2/3 banter and fluff between Daryl and Carol where she is trying to impress Daryl, but her attempts fall flat because Daryl is clueless. I found them funny in my head. :P

1. Trying to Impress Daryl Part One:

Carol looks at Daryl coyly. Daryl is confused.

Carol whispers: I can put both legs behind my head.

Daryl looks mortified: Huh!?

2. Carol Trying to Impress Daryl Part Two:

Daryl is surveying the courtyard to the prison at night. Carol brings him dinner on top the bus, but does not mount it. Daryl nods his thanks, going to take the bowl of stew.

Carol: That right there, mister, will knock your socks off.

Daryl, frowning: Ain't wearing none.

Carol: Mmm, what else aren't you wearing?

Daryl looks defensive: Ain't wearing no damn pantyhose, neither.

Carol fake gasps: What a coincidence.

She narrows her eyes at him: neither am I.

Daryl looks confused and huffs: What? That supposed to make us best friends now?

Carol looks playfully thoughtful: I am the cat's meow.

Daryl frowns further, testing her: Don't like cats.

Carol looks him up and down: 'Woof'.

Daryl looks at her in shock before snorting a laugh: Stop.

3. Carol tries to Impress Daryl Part Three:

Carol watches Glenn and Maggie from the watchtower with Daryl.

Carol: Glenn is sweet.

Daryl: Pfft.

Carol: You don't think he is?

Daryl: Sure. Real toothache goin' on here, he's so sweet.

Carol: You sound jealous.

Daryl: I sound like I don't care. Which I don't.

They are quiet.

Carol: I think you're sweet.

Daryl: Stop.

Carol: But I do. If you were a candybar, you'd be a Reese's peanut butter cup.

Daryl fidgets and murmurs: A bar ain't the same as a cup. Cup's round, bars are rectangular.

Carol is speechless for a moment before giggling: You're not supposed to correct me when I am flirting with you, Daryl.

Daryl:................Oh.

4. Carol tries to Impress Daryl Part Four:

Carol and Daryl hiding out in a closet waiting for a walker herd to pass set after season 2 but before season 3.

Carol: Thank you for saving me, Daryl.

Daryl: Didn't do nothin'.

He is not looking at her but at the herd passing by. Carol looks at his face, and sees a shallow cut on his cheekbone. Carol pauses before leaning forward and pressing her lips to the cut. Daryl flinches a little and gasps a bit. He looks at her before looking away and squinting:

Daryl: Watch it. I got a cut.

Carol: That's why I kissed it.

Daryl: Ain't no damn kid.

Carol: You're right.

They are quiet. The herd is gone. But they are still in the closet.

Carol: You know, friends kiss each other, too.

Daryl makes a 'humph' sound.

Carol: They do. All the time.

Daryl: Alright.

Carol: It's perfectly normal.

Daryl: ...pfft.

Carol: Is it okay if I do that, then? Just sometimes?

Daryl shrugs: Pfft. Don't need no permission. Do what you want.

Carol smiles in relief. Kisses his cheek in gratitude. Daryl's face srunches before softening.

Carol: That was a 'thank you' kiss.

Daryl looks like a child: Was it?

Carol's smile expands: Mmhmm. Not too bad, right?

Daryl shrugs before standing up: Nah. Let's clear out before 'nother herd rolls through here. Carol joins him on her feet.

Carol: sounds good to me.

They walk back to the road to the house they are taking shelter in. Glenn spots them first and runs to greet them along with Rick.

Glenn: Thank goodness! You guys are okay!

He slows when Daryl brandishes his crossbow at him. Rick raises his hands to meditate. Glenn is confused.

Glenn: Woah, man!

Daryl: Watcha thankful for?

Glenn: Um...cause you and Carol came back safely?

Daryl: 'Course we're fine. Keep your damn lips to yourself, short round.

Rick: Say what now?

Glenn: Daryl, I'm lost-"

Daryl: Yeah? And you're gonna be dead, too, if you touch me. Jus cuz you think we're friends that don't mean you gonna take liberties where you ain't got none. We clear on that, Asian? You got a woman. Go neck on her.

Daryl walks away in all seriousness with a redneck strut.

Glenn breathes deeply, afraid for his life. Rick slowly turns to Carol with a questioning look:

Rick: You wanna tell me what that just was?

Carol: *facepalms*

😂 Carol tries. I can only imagine their friendship in the beginning was filled with moments like these.

Poor Glenn.

Inexperienced Daryl misreading everything.

My theory about why Daryl might yell at Carol: Maybe Carol is acting too "normal" around him. Maybe she just reverts back to their normal banter & interaction from before she became hell bent on revenge. Maybe they're just in the cabin & Daryl loses it because he might have wanted her to trust him to open up and bare her soul. He's been twisted up in a knot with worry and maybe the way they have always just known what the other is feeling w/o verbalizing things just isn't good enough anymore.

That’s a great theory. I absolutely think Daryl is gutted about Carol not opening up to him, which is probably fueling his uncertainty of where they stand with each other. It seems like he’s becoming more conscious to how deeply he loves her, but he’s worried that she’s not reciprocating. I agree that, as much as I love their unspoken communication, it’s time for them to use their words.
